I'm liking a lot of what I am reading and seeing regarding this game, but I have a question about the playerbase and grouping.
I'm sick of the PUG LOTRO type crowd that only seem interested in a quick, unfun run of a mission/quest, then dropping the group and moving on. There doesn't seem to be much "community" in grouping in a lot of MMOs these days.
What I'm looking for is the type of grouping dynamic that I used to like from the days of Everquest, the type of groups that you would get in and have fun, where everyone stuck around for as long as they could and you helped everyone out. PUGs back then seemed to be more cohesive and fun. You made friends easily, and had a blast running dungeons and hunting because you were with the same people for more than 10 minutes...often you were with them for the course of the evening.
So my question is:
Are the PUGs in DDO good? Are they fun people who spend the time and stay with a group enjoying the quest, or is it not much different than say LOTRO, where once someone gets what they want they drop out quickly and groups don't last much longer than the span of one quest?
I want to find that fun and adventure I used to get in the days of EQ and even DAOC, and DDO "looks" promising, but you never know.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, what would be a good "rookie" friendly server to start on?
Thanks

Oh boy, PUGs are hit and miss. I think you're either going to have to post on the DDO forums to join a like minded guild or bring some friends.
I did PUGs all night tonight and only one person left. I did a group a few nights ago and someone left after each dungeon. And it may depend on what type of dungeons your running. If like harbor quests they are usually short and mostly done for exp. You get to lvl 3 and do something like Waterworks, STK those are longer dungeons with good exp/loot and people tend to stick it out.
To me your post sounds like you need to join a like minded guild. I currently don't belong to one to recommend any. If you do find like minded players I think DDO would fit well with you. It is all about the dungeons, puzzles, loot, teamwork that makes grouping in this game the best out there in my opinion.
Goodluck!

Ya know, PUG's have such a horrible name but personally, other than back in WoW, I have had exactly ONE poor experience.
I currently play DDO, LOTRO, Vanguard and GW. I'm in awesome guilds in each game. But I very rarely get the chance to do 'guild runs' so almost every single group is a PUG. And I have a blast.
Yes, LOTRO is kinda WoW-ish in the sense that a lot of times people only group for the one quest, instance, whatever. But I've still made friends tht way.
DDO on the other hand, the majority of the time I get in a PUG, it becomes "ok, what do you guys wanna do now? How about [insert adventure here]?" and the group stays together for the most part.
I agree with ya Talyn. The PUGs in DDO are the best I've experienced. Second would have to be Vanguard, when you're talking about people sticking around. Just every once in awhile you'll have that person who is chronic AFKer, or a rusher who goes off in the dungeon does his/her own thing and dies, complains then leaves the group. That's been my experience thus far with the bad of PUG's in this game.
But yes you do meet some awesome people doing PUGs who you put on friends list and usually end up grouping with them the next night or might have a good guild.

That's pretty much what I wanted to hear.
PUGS in LOTRO, I don't so much blame the players as I do the way the xp system is setup, which is what leads to the "one quest and drop" mentality.
Really hoping to see a change back to that notion of "so what do you guys want to do now"...We'll see. DLing the client as i type.
Thanks for the responses

I would say PUGs are more often than not quite rushed. If you do nothing to prevent joining such a group
However there are many people in DDO who share your point of view. So if you advertise your group as a no rush group people know what you are talking about also.
Also there are guilds who do not like to rush or just got full on perma-death.
So if you go in and expect everyone to take it all in and absorb the fun then you might be in for a rude awakening, but if you go in prepared you can be fine probably.
As mentioned above, 'pug' is not as bad as in most games. The only problem with DDO's is the rushing.
You absolutely MUST state in your LFM 'no rushing'. If you are looking on LFG, assume it will be a rush unless 'no rushing' is advertised.
I understand why people do it, though I don't like it myself. I fact, if I had a 1 charge wand of change DDO in anyway, I would change this rushing aspect of the game.
I adore the game otherwise!
You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.
But yea, if you say you're new...even the most hardcore of players will NORMALLY slow down and let you enjoy it, and in fact enjoy watching you enjoy it.
If they could some how randomize the dungeon layouts each time a person goes in it might slow the rushing. Like in Dungeon Runners for example if you log out and go back into the same dungeon the layout is different. You basically just gotta work your way again to find the next door to the next level.
Think that might help some, least in my opinion.
PS: I joined a tangleroot PUG tonight because I got a tell they wanted a rogue. My god, chronic AFKers, guys who would run through the SAME traps over again and DIE AGAIN without waiting for me to disable. I'm thinking, "Guys do you have a mind like a fish?" There are traps here!! The same ones you died at in the last instance of this place!!!! Healer chronic AFK, I just said eh enough.
