Could this game be a Hoax?

DomestoDomesto Member Posts: 110

Someone said that the videos that are shown for Darkfall could have been made with Torque game engine advanced in another thread. This is not the first time I have seen someone say this. So my question is how hard would it be for someone to make a video like the one that was just released using this program??

Here is a picture that someone made using Torque game engine advanced.

Why would people go through all the trouble of creating fake videos?

    That was totally me.

But on that, I also stated that it was a hypothetical guess of possibility.  I was merely stating it was POSSIBLE.  Torque is cheap, and relatively easy to use.  The graphics capability is on par with a lower level game engine to date, but still well into the realm of what was shown in the video.

I also said it was possible to have made those scenes as an Oblivion Mod.  We all know the power of the GameBryo Suite, and Oblivion's mod tools are pretty phenominal too.

A few artists could've thrown those scenes together in about a month.  I've seen it done before.

MMOs are no stranger to Hoaxes though.  There was Dawn, which was later put forth with proof direct for the company that it was there to generate buzz for their Flash/Java based games.

Unfortunately, because there's no absolute way of telling, we don't know if a game is a hoax until we play it.

It's just as likely this was a Prototype to shoot to Publishers as it was actually the game.  I'm not suggesting that's what it was, but it's possible.

There, I think I covered the bases for Flames by offering possibilities.  I'd like to note I have no proof it's any of those things, my views are pure speculation and are to be taken with a grain of salt until proven otherwise.  Thank you.

They already have a stand alone technical demonstration its what Asp played during the visit last year, and he was told it was what the developers had been showing prospective publisher's, and its quite possible that it was used to make some of the videos in the past.

If the possibility that this test video was made to show publishers as you suggest, I’m sure it would have to be part of a selection of “test” videos showing other aspects and features, because in my opinion the video considered in isolation is not comprehensive or impressive enough.

But if you consider the update it say’s

"For today's update we put together a medley of location test videos, from in and around clan cities and racial outposts."

This seems to imply that this was produced recently specifically for the update, so it might only of been made exclusively for community release for this update.

The demonstration Demo does not have all the mounts, just the Horse, 1 type of ship, no clan cities, no crafting, and the area or the zone is tiny. This is what Asp played, and this is what they showed to people in 2006.

The videos that we have shows more then that, allot more because of that I doubt that this video or the 2 that came before it have been made using the demonstration demo.

This is what Asp said about his gameplay experience whilst playing the Tech Demo last year here.

"Then they set me up on one of the computers to actually play the game. Since the most current release wasn’t stable they set me up with a stable version from last year. Outside of the company employees and some prospective publishers I was the first one to play a Darkfall demo! It was very exciting.

I got to be an orc. First thing I did was open my inventory (backpack). It was delightful to see the messy backpack full of pouches and various pieces of armor and weapons- UO style. This brought back memories of the inventory system I most enjoyed in MMO’s. I started to double click on the different stuff, equipping and unequipping different armor pieces and weapons. By the time I was done, my orc looked fearsome and ready to take on the world! The eye candy was definitely present and inspiring. In fact it was the best warlike looking orc I have ever played- and I have played many.

I was in the middle of some grassy hills right outside a small village and did I mention that the game was graphically stunning? I jumped up and down a few times, swung the different weapons around, ran here and there a bit. You know, the kind of stuff any dumb orc would do first thing. Then Kjetil came, he was some kind of magic user (not sure what race) and started showing me around. Of course I couldn’t help but hit him a few times with various weapons. He started throwing fireballs in different directions. Those were very impressive both visually and audibly. You felt that something bad is coming your way and you better hide. The ground was shaking, the buildings were burning. Things were breaking. He then did an area effect fire spell that hit me and I couldn’t see much but myself and everything around me burning. Tasos, who was behind me said : Move out, move out. So I moved out of the fire and I saw that a large circle of fire was burning around Kjetil. It looked amazing standing outside of the AOE and watching everything burn.

Kjetil then summoned a couple of mounts. I immediately got on one and he got on the other. They were intuitive, yet not as easy to handle as I thought. It was very realistic. Don’t expect horse riding to be easy in every situation. It does require some skill and it gets tricky when in tight space between buildings or players. Basically mounts shine in the open space. Aside from speed you can do all kinds of things when on them, typical for fighting on top of a mount. Like leaning sideways so you don’t get hit, for example. We fought in the city and I felt I needed to kill his mount first so I aimed my hits at his horse’s head. Indeed his horse died and all of a sudden he was on foot.

After horse riding and fighting we ran outside of the city to the sea coast. I got to use the bow. It was very realistic. Yet, not unnecessarily complicated. You aim, you get a timer bar and the arrow goes off. It has the arc trajectory of an arrow you’d expect, meaning it doesn’t fly in a straight line. You’ll just have to be good at using bows and judge the target and distance to be able to hit. You don’t get unlimited arrows but you can shoot as many as you have equipped.

Then he summoned a ship and we swam to it and climbed on board. I mounted one of the canons and aimed it at a building. Then shot the canon and there went off a ball in a normal trajectory hitting the building. It was a feeling of destruction and mayhem. He then summoned another ship and we started to shoot at each other. I was destroying other canons on his ship and shooting at the ship itself till it sunk. It awas a blast- literally! Then I left the canon and assumed control of the ship. Sailing it all kinds of directions and turning it around while he was shooting one of the canons. I wasn’t very good at it though and I can tell controlling ships does require skill and patience. Then we went on the lower deck and sunk the ship so we can drown with it; another realistic feature of sea combat in Darkfall. We were using the smallest ships in the game. I can’t imagine how impressive the largest would look like in battle. Showing up with such a ship at a port would probably make people a little worried.

We went back on shore for some fighting. My orc, with mace and shield, versus the mage. Starting up close, he gave me immediate advantage and I ran around hitting him in the back and the sides (which gives bonuses to damage) while he was trying to unleash his destructive magic. After a few hits and him not being able to face and blast me because I was moving around too much he fell! I just killed the lead programmer of Darkfall!!! Well, I am sure he could have summoned all kinds of crap in his favor, but damn it felt good. I guess you don’t die immediately though. You fall on the ground and the player has a final choice to make whether to finish you or let you live. I did my finish move and he was officially dead… and looted. I even looked at his paper doll and bags from his computer to make sure he had nothing left. Yep, the game is definitely full loot.

    Wrapping up

That was the end of the demo. It went so fast. I wish I had weeks to play it."

This is fundamentally an identical description of the content shown by every GAMEPLAY video released over the years with only minor cosmetic changes, please post a link to support your claim that “The video’s that we have shows more then that, a lot more”

Every video I’ve seen (I’m quite certain I’ve seen every one, but please enlighten me if that’s not the case) has only variations on the themes that Asp describes.

So I fail to see how you can be so certain in differentiating between which GAMEPLAY videos in the past have been produced using the Tech demo and which are from a beta version because they are practically identical in there content and only have cosmetic differences.

Is it not just as likely that they have simply added new cosmetic differences for example adding or spawning different mounts or avatars in the Tech Demo over the years when making new GAMEPLAY videos.

    *DISCLAIMER*

Before anyone goes of there handles bars I’m not saying that there is not a beta version, I’m just saying I don’t think we have definitely seen evidence enough to show that any of the videos released are actually BETA GAMEPLAY video’s yet and not just from Tech Demo's over the years.

Well WoW could be a hoax as well, it could simply be that 10 million people decided to orcestrate the most elaborate hoax in the history of time, involving all game reviwers in the worlds, all sellers of games as well as a shit load of marketing people.

It could be, only those that actually play WoW could say it isn't so, and then you still have to take their word for it. So perhaps WoW dosen't actually exist.....(plays some mod setting conspiracy music).

Seriously, the moto of our world is innocent until proven guilty, so until there is proof that Darkfall is a hoax it is still innocent.

Btw last I checked Dawn was never able to secure a 30million dollar loan based on Dawn, you need to have something to show to make that happen. Or perhaps you can use your game engine, make some fake screens and see how far you get with the banks.

I don't know why, but to me this game screams.."Dark and Light"

First I'd like to say that despite my hopes I believe Darkfall will never see the light of day. Honestly, this may be for the best. Let a AAA company attempt something this ambitious, no low-budget indy title will be the breakout success DF fanbois want it to be.

    Secondly, this topic is:

It will most definetly come out. Aventurine have a different timeframe and prioritates alot different then the larger computer companies concerning promoting and advertising. Longer development time since the company is smaller. Not that hard to comprehend is it? Have some faith.

Aventurine has the funding to keep the game in development  for this long so chill, if they had limited funds this game would have been canceled years ago. Ever heard of EVE? triple AAA company never developed that type of game it was an independant development studio that did it.  And guess what the developers of EVE never spent tens of millions of dollars hyping up their game, they put that money into development unlike some of those AAA companies that you mentioned.

I think its a lack of constant funding that may be the reason this game has spent the better part of a decade in development. If it was a case of investment, it would be hard to believe that private investors would allow thier money to be spent on a game that has taken 8 years to release a couple of screenshots/vids. Just look at Duke Nukem. The game has been started/dropped so many times, shifted between several teams and still has yet to be released. Now it's supposed to be out this holiday season, but the game has become nothing more than a running gag in the industry.

If anything DF is being financed by members of its dev team out of pocket, and worked on in thier spare time. Not really a bad thing, it keeps them free to persue what they want in a game. The only downside is if the game releases it will be horribly outdated. A few rendered/doctored screenshots wont make up for it in the long run.

I see Darkfall as the Duke Nukem of the MMO genre. Always talked about and perpetually in development.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Wouldn't be the first to end up being vapour ware, thats for sure.  On the bright side perhaps alternatives like earthrise will take the ideas and make them happen.

Now if only someone could up and make a functional game out of the ideas dark and light had.. that game could have been glorious, had it the support and development team needed.

This was the case from 2001 - 2003, there were only 3 or 4 people working on the concept of DF at that time and it was part time. But from 2003 to today the game has been in development full swing in Greece, around 30+ developers and 10 or so contract personel have been working on the game since then.

Razorwax merged into Aventurine, or in this case it was absorbed; late 2002 nov/dec was the time they decided that they would relocate to Greece and continue development there. I am not an expert here so I can't say how long it took them to move, how long to hire the work force and how long to get settled. BUt what I do know is that from mid 2003 the game was being developed by a whole team of people. It's safe to say that if you discount, the minor bumbs on the road the game has been in devlopment around 5 years which is not unheard of, most MMORPG's take this long to develop.... EVE took 6 years.
