Any of the more experienced players have any play tips you would recommend to a new player? I am mainly focused on PVE and exploration. I do enjoy some PVP but consensual PVP.
Other than that I have yet to even install the game yet (I am at work) but I am eager to hit the ground running.
Thanks in advance!

Depending on the Nation you pick. I would hit all the quest in the first port. At lvl 5 you get nation chat so you can talk to everyone in your Nation. This is were I would ask in game what to do next.
I played 3 months of closed beta and then I played open beta. I burned myself out on the game and Have not played it since release. Its a fun game, it has alot of stuff to do but too much Instances for me.
Sooner or Later
When sword fighting take there balace down to make them easier ot hit, I think it's default hot key 2 to attack balace. Make sure you use Heavy round during ship combat, it does way more damage. Read the tutorial mission and pick the other tutorial mission up. Don't build any warehouses (beside the first one you get for free from the economy mission. Wait and figure out what you want to do in the economy before building stuff without really knowing for sure what your final goals are. There cost goes up greatly.

Very cool. Thanks.
Couple other questions. I assume this is WASD control yes? Anything funky about it that makes it stand apart from traditional MMOs when it comes to controls or interface?
Just not a fan of point and click mouse movement and pop up menus FF style.
Yes, WASD movement, or, for your ships, you can use sliders at the top left corner of the screen. For me, WASD is more convenient.
Also, don't run out and buy things off the market right off the get go, you can do most of the begining quests solo with your starting ship equipped just as you get it. Save you money for later, when the ship upgrades start getting expensive.
Also, if you decide to play the economy game, do the economic tutorial, it will give you a warehouse and a couple of free raw material deeds to get started. Watch spending your money there too, as it is very easy to get sucked into the economic game and be living paycheck to paycheck waiting for somebody to buy something.
If you end up playing Spain come to the Bonny server, we would love to have you there. The war with the Brits has heated up and we could use more in the Spanish Nation.
I would say to start as a Privateer or a Naval Officer to start off with, a Freetrader after you get the hang of things. Use the Freetrader to do the economic stuff and learn to play the game with either the Naval Officer or Privateer. As for PvP in the game as long as you stay out of any circles on the maps , and if a Pirate you don't sail a ship that is PvP flagged you will not have to worry about being ganked or attacked by a higher level player.
Tips:
Go to the Burning Seas official forum. Especially if you end up with technical issues installing like I did. There are several issues with the game: routers, vista, Firewalls, spyware, Virus protection, Nvidia cards 8000 series.
Game has steep learning curve if you've never sailed a big ship before. It's hard...then as you change ships you'll relearn different tactics
Avatar combat: it's not about mashing buttons. Keep your balance...make sure foes are not balanced. Train on the line that gets you the pistol....it's very helpful
No matter how good you are, watch the numbers..5 on 1 either swashbuckling or ship combat...is not good.
Also it seems many of the beta players became Spanish or French...the newbies seem to be all Brits. So you have lots of Brit players, but on my server (Kidd) the Spanish are kicking our butts.
To have major impact on the game...join a good society.
If you get into the economy...right now it's all about building ships, which I understand is better in a society
My advice is to write it off. There is no POTBS with out PvP and a casual gamer is going to get tired of being jumped all the time. They are not as upfront as they should have been about the forced PvP involved in this mess.
Important to note that teh PvP circles can pop up anywhere and effectvely block you from moveing about with out spending husge amounts of time sailing around them.
