Who here would like to see a newer, better version of Planetside.

If a game like this were to be developed and it had elements of PvE and PvP in it and it was a first person shooter would you play it?

I would love to see a Battlefield 2 persistent world MMORPG/FPS.   Now that would rock as long as we could have female toons for us women that like to play FPS's.  Anyone else care to see such a game developed?

I couldn't see how it would work with BF2 because it has no story or anything like that and it has no character.

Well I have seen on Xplay's coverage of the GDC a preview The Agency by SOE. This could be similar in ways just not as large scale battles. Although I have never played planetside myself I hear it dident work so great with so many players at once.

I would love to play a well done FPS MMORPG. As far as a BF2 one, it could be done, just make it in the near future and add a good WWIII backstory, perhaps like the old PnP game "Twighlight 2000" if any one but myself remembers that one. It would make for a great game.

I wouldn't go for a remake of PS. However, I find the concept great. So yeah, I would definately like a new game like that.

On a sidenote: Do NOT compare BF2 (Or whatever BF for that matter) with a game like Planetside. Planetside has a lot more depth (Both tactically and strategically) than BF2, although when it comes down to the actual FPS action, BF2 is still king (Frontlines might be better though).

If BF2 had the scale of PS, then we would be happy, wouldn't we? :).

Actually, one thing that mildly annoyed me about BF2 was lazily picking up the PS2 box in the local shop one day just to look at and there on the back was a lot of stuff about a single-player campaign. True, all this probably was, was the various maps in a certain order with perhaps the odd cutscene to drive a story, but it wouldn't have killed them to have done something similar with the PC version.

Hopefully Vigil (Not to be confused with Sigil that did VG) will make Warhammer 40k MMO like PS.

Sure, I would for one love to see a new Planetside. Perhaps with some PvE thrown in on the side that contributes to the war effort in some way that would atleast provide more motivation to PvE.

So yes Teala, it is definately possible.

Even for a BF2 MMOFPS, just as long as it was laid out similarly to WWIIO and Planetside.

If a company brought out a game similar to PlanetSide's gameplay and then some, I would happily pay 20 dollars a month for it. That would be the only game I would play for years .

I'm all for a persistent FPS game to be the successor of Planetside.  Forget that mmo stuff though, like pve.. its an fps, not a shoot the dump ai drone for  undeserved skill upgrades .  In fact if they took the exact same concept, gave it a modern engine (smooth, responsive, good controls/mechanics), slapped some nice modern computer graphics on it, I'd be happy.

I loved the first game and am really considering re-subbing again.  I would def play a sequal if they create one.

    Teala,

It would be nice to get something like that, in the meantime there is persistant BF2 community that has been around for a few years now. They run a persistant world, take a look. Its probably as close as you will get to that sort of thing. (sorry no female avatars)

Huge Planetside fan here as well.

This game worked with zero PVE (unless you count shooting the occasional wall or engineer turret).  I generally prefer PVE over PVP, but this game was my favorite and it was 100% PVP...it was that good.

I always loved to see a remake of this game.  I actually thought a game with this style in the Call of Duty world (the origianl one) would be terrific.  Imagine Call of Duty graphics and effects on a Planetside scale?!?!

Something in the WWII era where your "levels" would be "ranks".  You would advance by going from Private, Corporal, Sergeant, etc.. with the various degrees inbetween.  You could probably get 80 "levels" of advancement out of this structure, and at the same time, levels wouldn't matter all that much on the battlefield in how "strong" you are, just how many options you had at your disposal.  For instance, a Private could kill a Major just as easy on the battlefield as the reverse, it's just the the Major would have access to different things (more vehicles, different weapons, etc.).

I know there is WWII Online, but I played that all of 10 minutes, and we need something with better graphics than a Commodore64.

The same again with upto date graphics and using the latest bandwidths and processors to enhance hit detection would rock me in my chair.

Apparently Blizzard recently merged with Activision (makers of Call of Duty series) and they are plotting an MMOFPS. I'm desperately hoping for a Star Craft MMOFPS :p massivefps.com has the story.

Honestly the only way I'd see PvE in a serious MMOFPS game would be if commander type players had access to NPC squadmates. It would help boost wartime feel if you had NPC grunts fighting beside and against you as well as players.

yea i read a little on the Call of Duty mmog. Usually, usually.... Usually if a company lets info like that slip out there is already something in the works. I hope this is true.

One thing is certain, Activision makes solid games, Call of Duty has such a large following, especially with the latest release COD4 modern combat, they could be something very big.

WOW rules the mmorpg market hands down, and Activision could rule the mmofps market.

Im waiting for it. I went back and retried WW2 online and quit after two days, too clunky, and graphics blow the big man to tears..

Planetside could have been much more then it currently is, but  SOE left it sit for far too long with many bugs and no content updates, guess the forgot why people pay a monthly fee. Now the player numbers arent there to justify resubbing. And this black ops bullcrap just pushed me away for the duration...

Have any of you seen Huxley ?  It's going to be what you want i think.  I played planetside and the expansion for some time and loved it if they make it completely free id go back.  Was a great game and there were some epic battles.

  • WardropWardrop Member Posts: 462

Huxley, yea i seen an article in pc gamer, they do small pvp arena battles... no thanks i can do that for free with unreal3 or any other shooter, its still not on par with planetside and doesnt employ a world model similar to planetside.

Im not concerned with the pve aspect, its the pvp that i enjoy when it comes to shooters so i cant speak about the pve aspect of huxley.

I enjoy the world war battlefield experience.

yea I would like to see a updated Planetside, the fact that they didnt really add anything like new weapons, vehicles for a very long time pretty much says nay to the universe.

Maybe pick a better story. or make a new one up, just keep the same type of features as PS did.

The problem is that when you go to sleep just about everything you did went up in smoke. And you really never felt all the beifeits, that some of the contenes gave you. I mean really "faster respawn time" by i think 2 secs. really isn't something for me to go crazy over. About the only fun thing to do was to take over a factions home cont. and use there vehicles, which then you feel like a noob as you cant hit anything with it =p

I have to disagree, there ARE new weapons (latest Flamethrower) and vehicles (latest Phantasm, Gallaxy Gunship) too. There are new certs (latest Expert Hacking), opening new tactical opportunities a making us to have fun. Some people complaint after new things are added, but in time, new content will be balanced allways.

System is good and polished in years. But graphic is old, almost no FPS fan know Planetside exists - marketing is poor.

I would appreciate scaled pricing according to Battle and Command rank, some decent PvE teamplay, maybee new version of graphic engine.

Although I am sometimes disapointed too, when all we acquired is turned into dust in few minutes before i go sleep, Planetside has its place in my top 10 games for years 1990-2008.

(Recently i have noticed there is one other game with large scale battles... something from WW2... is anywhere a good comparison between Planetside and that game?)

Sure  these have been recently added when they increased the fees and raised the station pass to $30 a month.

Before that they left it sit with nothing for years.

I would love to see a better version of Planetside: better graphics, better physics, more varied vehicles, MORE PLAYERS (!), etc.

I'll pay the $14.95... just give me a game better than Planetside (which will be tough, despite the suckage of the new updates), and we've got a deal.

it is obvious that EVERYONE who ever played PS would LOVE a new and better PS2. that means no SOE involvement .

I would love to see a new, better version of PS! I loved the old PS, but had a lot of trouble with its non-streamlined 3d engine. It had some of the best gameplay I've ever had in an MMO. Equally fun and frustrating: can't get better than that.

Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.

same here i really loved PS bak in the days and it still iching for gettign to play it again

i would surely play the PS2 (or at least newer improved version) caus this game is still one of a kind to me but SOE has to wake up once and grab it all togeter..

btw does it still exist ?? caus the site isnt working ???
