my ideal game would be something i can actually go into the game and live an actual life. The closest i've come to is swg back in the days before everything happened. alot of times i get into the game i don't want to go fighting something, or starting this big long mission to where i don't have enough time to finish it. in swg you didn't need to fight to have your place in it, although i did have one just in case. you could be an entertainer, or a merchant if you wanted to. i would log on to check my harvestors, or put stuff into my vendors, like i had an actual store. people could walk in sit in my living room with my fake tv, tables, plants and we can sit there and conversate. and it was an actual house, no one room place with A chair and A book shelf. than i could get a new house with multiple floors. you could build your own cities, to where you can plot out monuments. In order for me to get items i would travel to peoples stores and look through their things. not a giant bank of random peoples stuff in which 3/4 of it i don't care about. There is actually different qualities of the same type of weapon, depending on the quality of items used to make it. which means not everybody had the same exact weapon, may look same but was different quality. and there were big long missions to where it played along a story. and as far as your professions. you could change at any time, and have any combination of specialties you would like with exceeding a certain point count. So..... 1. a place i can call my own, to where i can have friends come over and see my ACTUAL house, not a room. Like when you're starting out, you can rent an apartment, that's actually in an apartment building to where you have an address like 8th floor 2nd door on left. 2. a place to where i don't have to fight in order to have a place. 3. no level numbers saying you are a noob. 4. being able to wear different titles like master this apprentice that. so we don't have 100's of people yelling level 350 enchanter looking for work. you see the title you know what they can make. 5. more in depth missions. 6. really rare items, that maybe only a couple people have.
7. equality, to how alot of people are saying that if you don't play as often as your friend, they will get ahead of you and you're stuck by yourself.
Wow .. you are getting too serious. I guess each person has their own preference.
To me, MMORPG are just games. I want to have good content, fun & easy quest and after I go through one game, it is time to do another. So i also don't like very very long games.
Playing with friends/other players are fun but that should not be mandatory. And I would not put too much emotion into an online artificial community which can change everyday.
I just want to solo/group in PvE, all the way, from the start, to the end, and miss nothing which would make me a better soloer/grouping (it can be incredibly hard to achieve some, but always, in group/solo, never outside of these 2 gameplays). No nerfs please, you put the rules you want, your duty is to uphold them.
Simple guy has simple needs. Raiding, no thanks. PvP, no thanks, Tradeskills, not really. RvR, definitely not. Solo, pleaasse. Grouping, mooooooree! Forcing me to Raid/PvP/RvR actually prevent me from even playing the game. Forcing = If my progression path lead me to said activity (aka better rewards).
So simply put...everything belongs to PvE-groupers! At least, on 1 server. I don't care what happen on other servers, even if they have auto-max level and auto-epic stuff, don't care (how you keep peoples subscribing there isn't my concern either)...I will earns mine and on my server, everyone who has it, earns it by soloing/grouping.
Solo and grouping for PvE only? Play a single player RPG with multi-player support. It sounds like to me that Neverwinter NIghts 2, playing on a persistent world server, would really be up your alley. Or hitting a LAN party and playing Dungeon Siege 2. I'm not being sarcastic, it just sounds like what you're asking for is achieveable by what I suggested.
How can you people keep NOT GETING IT!?!? Singleplayer games are not persistant worlds and the feeling you get from it is far inferior to a true MMO. So no, he does not want to play a SP game, he wants to play an MMO that doesen't force him to do shit he hates!
Did you miss where I said playing on a persistant world server for NWN2? In case you never heard of them, they are essentially MMO's on a smaller scale run by players who build game worlds using the toolset that came with the game. The servers usually run 24/7 and can have 50 or more people logged in at once. Some of the communities are really huge.
I want to return to virtual reality games where each player chooses a real profession (not a combat character class) A hunter should hunt. A farmer should grow food. Warriors should war.
I want to wear any armor of my choosing - armor should mitigate damage and have encumbrances not boost stats. Plate reduces ranged accuracy and/or speed but a bowman can still wear it if he chooses.
I want more specials than my toolbar will allow but I want a large number of slots in my toolbar. Like 30 or so.
I want stats to directly effect my characters abilities but give me the choice of where i put my points.
I want crafters to have a choice in what the armor or weapons they are crafting look like. Customization of not only color but spikes and chains and stuff.
I want material quality to matter when crafting like in SWG
I want a house for my toon to store his items and show off his loot and rewards.
I want to belong to a town and run for mayor if i choose.
I want all colours and features of the human race to be available when creating your toon.
I want the freedom to drop everything and take my character in a whole new direction.
I want to live in an amazing online world and do things I can't do in this one.
I want it to run bug free and be polished on release.
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
Id like to see some real PvP. Ive tried a few games and yeah, they are ok, but i hope the future brings better. From what i read, WAR has what id like to see in a new mmo, i just hope all this hype isn't for nothing.

I am familiar with those, it's still no it. Semantics get us nowhere realy, they just take us back.
My bad, I didn't give an example of something new I want and that's my mistake, but Singleplayer games are still not MMOs. MMOs can be played solo and offline (with some coding skillz), that doesen't make them singleplayer expiriences, it goes both ways.
I want a Portal MMO where a random player get's to be a computer and devise his own levels in a Cube like expirience.
A living breathing dynamic world(No, doesnt need PvP for that)
Different AI depending on specie/type of mob.. Cat behave like cats etc.
Dynamic mission system. Game builds mission for you, not premade B-movie story crap.
The story of the world is the background, not some handheld "you're the saviour of Frodo!" crap.
A gun is a gun is a gun.. Only slight variables by modification/addons/crafting
Crafter economy, where the loot is part of the crafter tools for building the gear the looters make
A Medical/social economy, where medical/entertaining skills has a role in the game that make them needed... for healing, not "buffs uberistic".
Food keeps you alive, not buff you.. Who gets strong by eating a apple?
No dying, only incapacitation/unconciousness.. Wounded players get transported to nearest hospital. No more "cloning " or other stupid crappy majic reasons to why you died and came back. This time the medics SAVED ya..deal with it.
Permadeath as a choice. Player can opt to die instead of being transported to hospital.
Full loot from DEAD characters.
Real 3D combat.. Land, Air, Water, Space... Foot, car, glider, ship, boat...
100's if not more clothing/armor choices where each piece has its values, so no "ALL USE 1 type onleh!"
Character customization a la SWG/APB/Perfect World. If ya run into a clone, it's only because someone has the same taste as you!
Player vs Player conflict and something meaningful to fight over. Meaningful quests, not pointless kill tasks. A complete lack of instancing. Active participation in combat, not clicking on a monster, pressing a button, and watching my character attack while occasionally pressing a number key to activate a special ability. A realistic economy. A balance between weapons and the character that wields them, why must weapons make the player? In most modern MMORPGs, you take away a characters armor and weapon and they're so weak anything can kill them. Why can't the power be in the players statistics rather than his/her items? What i'd really like to see is MMOFPSRPGs and a far more interactive world that can be shaped by the actions of players. I want to see epic battles with thousands of players fighting for something.
Player looting brings excitement. Its not required for me, and in my experience with it, it has both angered and pleased me greatly. It makes fights more exciting.
In the good old days of lineage2 anytime a player died they had the potential to drop an item or items at random from thier inventory. I miss those days, the PvP in that game had a level of excitement to it that just is not there anymore since they did away with dropping items on death.
What I would like to see, is a PvP system where the spells/skills/gear of one character cannot completely dominate another character of equal level. I would like to see a somewhat limited selection of spells/abilities that a player needs to use at the right time in order to be effective in battle, instead of just spamming the "Iwin" buttons each time.
PvP somewhat like WoW had back in the day before end game loot, when lvl 60's were running around in greens/blues, and fights lasted a while, with the victor always in question.

Because most players don't like it. I would never duel if that is the case.
Damn, this and this is what I would like to see in "next-gen" mmos... I mean, not JUST that, but all sorts of stuff and puzzles and gameply using that kind of mechanics.
Gooo real world rules!
I don't need complex menu UI system with gazillion options and vertical learning curve, I don't need stat manipulation / immersion killer, all I want is the freedom to use objects I choose in a way I choose and I promise you, everyone will play with as much complexity and inteligence as they wish.

I would like to see pre-cu/nge swg and full open pvp with no safe zones and full looting of the body and permadeath.
BRING BACK MY SWG!!!

Full loot!
Epic lootz doesn't matter!
No level grind or unbalanced classes!
Naval combat that can actually affect cities on land.
