Cleric, fighter, mage, thief?  Check

Grinding levels? Check

Harvest and craft? Check

Hours of raids to get good gear? Check

Ok, haven't we played this game, in a slightly different form, over and over and over again for the last fifteen or so years?

hasnt the op some really good points ? basicly he is right and I wont play age of conan.. its not innovative (the "innovative cool new combat system" ist just a excuse for "we got a different game")

and I dont need nipples, I can play with the real nipples of my girlfriend instead of virtual ones... and I for one can be sure that its not a man behind the virtual nipples, can you ?

    lol.. amen.

and you forgot: no real death penalty, which is the main point of why I wont play this game. we got soooo many fantasy genre mmos, we dont really need another one and without a hardcore death penalty system I dont really see a challenge in this one.

which will make me wait to see what "Darkfall" will bring. hopefully something more challenging than these world of warcraft cookie-cutter mmos.

people are sick and tired of games with no challenging, we need something more hardcore. I know I am not the only one who feels this way :)

to the age of conan fanbois: yeah yeah I know. its okay, play your game and its fine. I wont.

I was rather amused at this part. Rarely seen such a nice paradox. What, in your opinion, is being innovative, if it isn't being different from what is established? *raises brow* I'd really like you to give me a good answer to that.

Also, after reading your second paragraph...."and I for one can be sure that its not a man behind the virtual nipples, can you?" <- Does that mean your GF is virtual? I'm just asking.

And in case you want to accuse me of nitpicking. This post is basically just to tell you that -you- are nitpicking. AoC is not the reinvention of the genre, they never said that. But they -did- put some new features in and they -did- change some things from the standard mold. Please do not deny that, lest you ignore the facts.

    To Alalala:

Do you play FPS games? Do they change a lot in game mechanics over the years? Are you still playing them?

Do you play racer games? Do they change a lot in game mechanics over the years? Are you still playing them?

Do you play <insert type of game>? Do they change a lot in game mechanics over the years? Are you still playing them?

This is a low fantasy MMO setting covering a specific lore setting. The classes are very interesting and refreshing, given that they are only humans after all. Your dislike for the game system is noted and respected. I hope you find somewhere else implemented the system you imagine.

    To  Trenyt:

Your year reference is probably an exageration. However, you must note that a lot of people that leave a game due to boredom (as the OP seems to be), are not exactly sure of what the innovation they are looking for really is. If he knew, he wouldn't be in this forum, expressing his opinion.

Unless of course he's a fresh troll that didn't bother even making a name by pressing more than two keys.

    well how can I say,

some "men" enjoy playing female characters, so dont be surprised if your ingame girlfriend turns out as a man :)

As an opinion hes entitled to it, but this thread is pointless. Most things in life are not huge jumps and a new thing, they are steps up and improvements on prior designs.

No offence but you are deluded if you expect an MMO to be something completely different from the cookie cutter design that spawned the genre.. because there is nothing that will fall into this area.

All games share common traits, its the slight differences and ways of doing things that make games stand out from one another.

Him saying 'have we seen this all before' is like saying 'are all humans still neanderthals walking around in loincloths banging each other on the heads with clubs'..

No we arent the same... we have evolved... we are not something new but we are something different.

And difference and improvement is not a bad thing.

You're making it sound like people are mistaking avatar gender for real gender. Or that people flirt with avatars of the opposite sex (or same sex). The thought that people can be so naive never occurred to me. Perhaps because I rarely cared about the random person sitting behind an avatar and was just playing the game.

Having said that, women of Hyboria look rather hot, which does make me rethink my policy of making male only avatars.

I am well aware of that but...eh, well, let me just ask then, what does -THAT- have to do with AoC in particular? Do you think it is different in any other game? Seriously, if you're going to ignore a game for some reason, go ahead, but please give some more serious statements.

To the OP, what the previous posters already said and what I pointed out in my last paragraph. AoC never said they would reinvent the genre, but they are adding to it and changing some things, unlike other games. This is a fact (unless of course, they totally redo the entire game before launch, so I can't guarantee it 100% yet^^).

some good ponts here, you convinced me...

but I think what a lot of players like me would like to see is something more challenging like if you die, it means something...

hardcore player looting is one example or at least 1 server with open pvp everywhere except citites for example...

of course the ballancing in a system like that would be very hard, since some players might be ganked by a horde of morrons...

    Word.

Honestly however, I dont see why OP even had to do a thread about it? I mean, if you dont like it, ignore it? Yet you just had to come in, and post about it. It sounds to me like you were really looking forward to this game, and something came, and ruined it for ya. Just cause you've lost the "feeling" doesnt mean you have to try and make us loose it aswell, oh wait, aint gonna happen anyway. Some of us, are actually looking forward to it.

As far as I have read for now, the PVP Servers will feature exactly the style of PvP environment you would want. Free for all PvP except in some of the cities as safe zones. Other than that, anyone can attack everyone at any time. As for the Player-Looting, that is not yet decided, so you may still hope that it will be implemented that you can loot some of your enemies stuff. But don't bet on it.

*sigh* this conversation is and will go round in circles compare WOW to AOC some might say no contest  WOW wins hands down but not me blizzard dumbed down wow so even a 6 year old could play it, it has a simplistic pvp system, a useless crafting system,  quests which are loosley following a story line and way too many kids.

AOC looks to correct all the faults that games like WOW have got and improve on them ten fold so if thats not revolutionary enough what is.

As for death penalties aren't there enough elitist jerks in mmorpg's without giving them yet another thing for them to say "look i'm better than you hahahaha" or "your crap cause you died"

In all honesty, I think the manual real time combat where you swing your weapon and manually block incoming attacks is challenging enough for me. Im tired of games that overuse and misuse macro and scripting in games that makes players move further away from actually 'playing' the game and more towards a fully automised experience.

If I wanted an game where it was all done for me, and I was turned into another NPC I would watch a movie and feel part of a Saga.

So for me Im hoping Age of Conans more involved combat style will mean Im always on the edge of my seat looking out for things occuring on the screen and feeling im really involved with the game rather then a bystander.

High/low fantasy and Conan lore go(and are) hand in hand. If you can classify any character that you have read in any book as anything other than those 4 archtypes, please let me know.
Im not saying its good or bad. It just is what it is. At least with AoC there are classes that blend the archtypes to the point they can be used in various, and different ways. Sounds good to me at least.
Grinding levels? Check I am not in beta, so I honestly dont know how bad the grind is. I enjoyed EQ back in the day and it was a grind fest. For me its not about the "end game"... its the journey there.
How would you want to level? Quests? PvP? Camping?
Harvest and craft? Check I wouldnt really think that a MMO would be a MMO without a crafting system. From what I have heard AoC will not even have much of one. Im a bit dissapointed, but I am keeping my hopes up. It may be simple and suprisingly good.
Hours of raids to get good gear? Check From what I know of the game. The best gear will be player made. Dont have to raid for hours. Just harvest and craft.
Ok, haven't we played this game, in a slightly different form, over and over and over again for the last fifteen or so years?

It is always funny to me when we get threads like this one. They are a dime a dozen. For some reason I always seem to reply. Dont ask me why, just ask yourself:

    Am I still playing?

If your answer is yes(which it likely is since your on this site), then the genre must be adapting or evolving to a point you can enjoy the same content over and over and over again.

Another thing that always seems to amaze and bring a smirk to my face is that these threads usually do not have a shread of thought put into them in order to sway anyones opinion. Using sentence fragments to get your point across is not the best way Im afraid. At least use improper grammer like me. Then of course, if we did that... it wouldnt be much of a flame thread.

I will now flame FunCom. Check.

of course its part of the roleplaying if a man prefers female avatars, there is nothing wrong with that...

Yes, I was going to edit my post and add this point but the poster you quoted beat me to it. There are PvP-RP servers, and PvP normal servers from what I gather which will be like any MMO PvP servers where you can stab anyone to your hearts content... however I think Funcom are writing up a rules of conduct in regards to all fighting.

So there will be some guidelines to follow in combat, but I doubt it will be that restricting :)

I understand you. But what you describe can happen anywhere that the real person identity is not readily available and it's not MMO specific.

would you re-invent the wheel and come up with a square? although I have to say that after watching a video on crafting that it seemed v.similar to lotro - but then again killing spiders will never be a new experience, I'm glad FC have not tried something radical they know what their customers want and hopefully there will be enough new bits and bats to make it worth playing, although I think that playing  a new game is perfectly acceptable if all thats changed is the graphics, sounds, etc.
