Back on topic, that comp is pretty good man...512 more ram and a better graphics card and you'd have a top of the line comp there...

Your system will run Doom 3 just fine. I'm going to help everyone out by suggesting that anyone considering playing Doom 3 read this article:

    The Official DOOM 3 [H]ardware Guide http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0

It is an unbiased article with good information that will help you decide if you need to upgrade or just buy a new system if you will be playing Doom 3. Good luck.

Acording to PCG DOOM3 will run on next to nothing (P4 1.5GHz, 384Mb RAM and a 64Mb Dx9 Graphics Card). When you think about it this is very low. I'd imagine therefore that the game had many scalling options such as res depth, dynamic lighting and so on.

As for having a 256Mb graphics card, at the moment this is quite pointless. With system RAM the more the merrier is true as this is used for everything and is easily accessable buy the CPU. (I want someone to come up with a processor with an onboard graphics card in its registers. That would be fast and could be small - i bet 16Mb and a good chip would easily beat the newest cards on the market simply due to the speeds of transfer within the CPU and the bottlenecks normal systems provide). However consider the use of Graphics RAM - it merely serves to store in the main texture information. Having more than that displayed on the screen at once is irresponsible programming on the games developers side.

Software used to be great, people used to make it so that it was as efficient as possble and used the least amount of hardware time to run. Just take a look at the code in modern software and look at all the useless rubbish in there. The inefficiencies and the memory holes.

With better programming many game engines could do the same job with less resources used. I doubt Doom3 will be an exception.

NB after reading the article on the website mentioned above I have decided to test what they are saying at Uni.
