Wish Spells, New Starting Area, Live Events...WOW!

This is from an interview with Kate Paiz found in the news section...talk about HUGE stuff!!!

Next, the anniversary event will be the unveiling of new live event tech first used in Lord of the Rings Online, another Turbine title. The tech allows Turbine to program scripted moments such as changes in the environment, NPC activities, spawns, etc. Enhanced with live GMs, this new technology allows Turbine to offer more impressive – and easier to create! – in-game events. This will likely lead to more live events in DDO, starting with a big anniversary event lasting until the 9th of March. Kate wouldn’t give me many details, but did say “the city of Stormreach will never be the same again, and you can quote me on that.”

Turbine listens closely to community input and feedback; one feature that DDO users have long been asking for is the Wish spell. As this spell is extremely blurry, it’s most easily implemented as an event – and that’s just what Turbine is doing. As another event during the anniversary, there will be an item giveaway for subscribers that is, Kate told me, a variation on the D&D Wish spell.

Next up we discussed Update 7. With the upcoming release of D&D’s 4.0 ruleset, I had to ask if DDO’s Update 7 would include these new rules. Unfortuenntly, the ruleset for 4.0 is still in beta, so update 7 will not feature any 4.0 ruleset changes.

What it WILL feature is the introduction of a new class: the monk. To facilitate the introduction of the monk, Turbine is updating the new player experience – if you want to reroll, don’t worry, there will be new content! And if you were a fan of the Harbor, don’t worry; while the tutorial is being completely replaced, the rest of the old content will remain; you just have more content to choose between, now!

Of course, they’re not ignoring the high levels either. This update will introduce new raid and wilderness areas. The content will be a continuation of the Shabarath invasion; while I didn’t get much detail on the raids, the wilderness area will be a vast underground space with lots of little spots of beauty: crystals and waterfalls will adorn the cave, but it is an invasion area and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

If you’re a DDO player who likes crafting, there’s more good news with update 7: crafting will be expanded into the main game, making it more accessable to lower levels and non-raiders.

Live event tech first used in LOTRO? Didn't DDO have beholders that invaded the city during beta?

  • VincenzVincenz Member Posts: 1,498

I think this is a lot more complex, like one they had in LOTRO where it was announced that goblins had set up outposts outside of town, a militia was formed, teh skies turned black, etc.

Like a real story arc, not just monster spawns.

The last "Hallow's Eve" event took place in the Necropolis.  There were LOT's of undead and beholders spawning.  The most I saw at a single concurrent time were 2 beholders and about 10-15 other undead types. While I don't recall what the CR of the beholders were I do remember the other mobs being around cr 4.  It was cool to see Beholders at the inn nuking everyone who wasn't prepared - there were around 20 people at the inn when the first 2 beholders made themselves present!

My understanding is they've always been able to spawn mobs in the open game world including an instance if the GM needed.

As stated, this is a tremendous enhancement to the game environemtn by allowing global events with more of a "scripted" experiance.  I can't wait to see dragons setting the harbour ablaze!

The trick isn't giving players things to do but to give the players reason to do them.  Not sure how a player would be rewarded for an event but something as simple as a tag/lable/etc would be nice; Protector of Stormreach, The Dragonslayer, The Destroyer of Worlds!

    Can't wait!

Wow redoing the starting area. That will give them permadeath players more challenge since they probably know the harbor quests blindfolded. Lot of awesome stuff on the way.

Could someone tell me what this wish spell is? Is it a pnp D&D spell or something?

Anyone heard a release date for this update?

A new harbour area?  Keeping the old one?  A new class?  MONK!!! Sounds all good!

Wish spell was a 9th Level Wizard spell (if I recall correctly -- my D&D days were primarily in the very early (19)80s.

I recall it as a request players made to the DM.  The DM would roll the dice and would either grant the request or grant a modified version of it.  It was possible in theory to wish for almost anything.   Although I never received my Wish for a +10 Sunsword.

6.1 is the live event, wish spell, etc. and that went live today with the event being this coming weekend.  The wish spell was in the form of a Djinni granted wish that did various things from +1 to a stat, etc.

7.0 is Monks, new starting area, new low level quests, Shavarath, etc. and that's in May.

So this wish thing from a Djinni is the secret 6.1 thing Kate was talking about? Or has the secret thing not happened yet?

the wish is just a small part of it (like the dark skies over Stormreach)...the big stuff is coming with the event, which I think starts Sunday.

  • SevenwindSevenwind Member UncommonPosts: 2,188

The skies are VERY dark. Geez

    Some pics of the Djinni

I haven't tried the Djinni yet. What have some of you gotten as rewards or wished for? Details please!

You are bound to see Tasty Hams raining down on players all over stormreach, and I thought about trying the Dragon Monk but those Yeti pelts smell worse than Kargon's socks.

I wonder if the Dragon Monk option is taking the piss out of the Penny Arcade cartoon.

I'm a little lost on this one. Care to explain?

I know they made a cartoon about Kate not to long ago, is that it?

Yep in that cartoon she appeared offering Dragon Monks, which I believe is a play on giving everyone the ultimate character in desperation. Turbine have shown more humour by actually offering this.
