MMORPG.com spam

I just wanted to warn that one of the adds that cycles on the mmorpg.com's home page is a danger for an adware. It happened to me a couple of times, and only when I come on this site. you get automaticly redirected to some XPantivirus crap with false warnings that your computer is infected with viruses and such.

I juste wanted to give this heads up to people who may not know : those warnings are not true. They're only a way to scare you into buying their product. If it happens to you, just cancel the warning and dont click any links, just close your bowser.

sadly, I'm still trying to determine which add triggers this, cause each time it happens, I lose my browsing history and my current page gets swiitched.

and before someone tries to mention that it's only my computer that is infected, it's not. I make a living debugging and repairing omputers, I now how to keep my computer clean.

Well you seem to be the only one having a problem so far so maybe you should check again. I do the same thing for a living and I would be the first one to admit that no matter how computer savy you may be things will still slip through from time to time. Also if your using IE you may want to consider switching to Firefox with the Ad-blocker plugin. I use it and recommend it to all of my customers as it will save you and them a lot of Adware/Spyware headaches down the road.

And it is more than likely from one of the streamed in rotating ads.

    Hello,

We have been trying to locate the source of this for some time now and are not having any luck.  The oddness in this is that not very many people are seeing this (including all of our staff).  We are leaning towards the theory that the user might already need to have something on their computer, perhaps a spyware/malware app that reacts to a keyword on our site or something.

We are actively monitoring this situation and trying to determine where it is originating from and eliminate it if indeed it originates from our site or one of our advertisers.

Any information you can post from your security programs will help greatly.  For example - Trend Micro will tell you the exact file in your temporary browser cache that tried to launch the pop up.  The name of this file would help us GREATLY.

Are you people with this issue running Firefox with the Ad Blocker Plug-In?  I haven't had any problems on any of the machines I use to view this site regularly and and I use this browser configuration on all my systems.

We just received a good email report from a user (thanks Dalevi1) that had some page source.  We did notice one common ad in the two pages and have disabled it.

I will be very anxious to know if this still happens to anyone (due to page caching it might take a couple hours to really know)

I visit the site everyday. Never had any problems. Not even the FIreFox Ad Blocker poped up. I'll keep on lookout though. How are people able to put a code into the source though? Is it something to do with the 666, 676, 777 thing?

If done through ads streamed to the site, it's fairly easy to piggy back the code.

Ahh, Ok.......I use Firefox and this stuff never affects me so I didn't even know about it until his post. I've never once had any of these issues with this site even though I have noticed these things happening left and right to IE users. I cannot stress strong enough to all of the people using this site or any site on the internet for that matter that if internet security means anything to you for god's sake get Firefox and leave all this crap behind you. It takes about 3 minutes to download and install and you'll find that your online time will be a lot less stressful for doing so.

Well, even Firefox got hit with this one, at least on some people. I use Flock, for example, which is Firefox based. When I was hit, the browser minimized and the ad for XPantivirus stood there by itself. So I was able to know right away what was happening and used task manager to kill the browser and ad, therefore having no chance of accidentally hitting the ad and executing the code. Alot depends on individuals' security settings and so on, which is why some get hit and some don't, regardless of browser. I've even been running IE7 when some of the full attacks of keyloggers/virii have occured here and not been hit. But I keep the security locked down pretty tight when I use IE for anything.

  • BrenelaelBrenelael Member UncommonPosts: 3,821

I know Zorvan, Firefox is not 100% secure as no browser is. As I said some things will always slip through and I have been hit a few times while using Firefox at other sites but usually with Firefox it's easy to tell what is going on, not so easy with IE at times. I also use IE7 with Security features locked down to the max when sites that I must visit require it. It's just that for your average computer user Firefox is a lot safer as it comes fairly secure right from the time you download it. IE you really have to know your way around a computer to make it even reasonably safe as most of the Adware/Spyware out there is written to specifically exploit security holes in IE or just user security ignorance with respect to IE.

edit: Also there are those extra special users for which no browser is safe because they just can't resist stuff like......."You've just won the Brooklyn Bridge!! Click HERE to download it!!". Those people do however keep people like me and the OP in business though.

Well I'm glad I didn't get flammed for this. Only meant to warn people so they dont get infected by whatever crap. It's good to know that the admins were already looking for it (sorry for not searching the previous thread though).

To Bren : dont worry I didn't post my topic without doing any search of my own first. I was well aware that the problem could in fact be only me, so I launched my owl "fleet" of scanners when I got hit by that thing, but (as usual for me), beside tracking cookies, my comp was clean, hence why I came and tried to help.

I see infected computers too often at my job, and didn't want some of those horror sotries I've seen there happen to anyone on this site. It would suck that this nice web site be flagged a a dangerous one.

Anyway, only meant to help :)

I noticed it a few days ago when I changed firewall.

We have to go on a alternate connection to this site because of this. Note that it's not always showing this message, so it should be one of the ads.

I can try to track it down through our servers.
