I find it sad when game devs get this desperate. When HZ first came out we all thought it would be the bomb, funny how it turned out. How many people are on the servers as of now?

Well many mmorpg have offers to come back to the game and this games are certainly not folding.

Games I remember that offered me free comeback time have been EQ(on 2 occasions!),DAoC,AO and planetside.

This games are certainly not near folding as they are doing very well indeed.

So i see no desperation here really.

Oh thanks for the heads up for the free 10 days getting mine now.

I assume that there are more players now because of the free trial. I still cannot beileve that this game went so downhill.

Actually a great marketing tool, how many have signed up for the "free returns" and then forget to cancel in time and end up paying :)

the mmorpg market right now is saturated, so all companies are trying to keep their playerbase in light of the competition.

You just hit the nail on the head like we tend to say in Belgium.  Companies need to use every means possible to try and lure people in playing their game.  Some might indeed forget to cancel and pay the monthly fee.  When I quit there were 3 servers and now I read there were 13?!?  No wonder they had to cut down.

No you played on the european server. There are still only 3-ice,wind and earth. However,i agree its a good gimmick.Thru return back offers i have returned and stayed for 2 months in AC2 and 2 months in planetside(paying for the months of course).

So it does work.Espically if you feel the game had potential because if you are gone for a while a lot of things are added and you want to see this.

    Well,
I've been out of touch with my Horizon account for some time now *shaking a fist at the gods of foreign traineeships with slow Internet connection*.
I'd like to come back for say a 30 day play free over (I remeber AO giving these out before releasing SL) ... ...

I played this game for the first few months and finally quit.  I check the boards every so often to see the progress and I still read about the same issues.  Maybe if they would of tried making a game that was somewhat finished and enjoyable they wouldnt have to try so hard to keep people in the game.

I don't know if I'd agree that the free trial offer signifies desperation but it is clear that AE needs to do something to boost its playerbase.

The problem they have, though, is that the game itself is riddled with flaws... the graphics engine, whilst allowing for beautiful landscape renders, is a horrible resource hog and the world model is broken to the extent that they have been unable to add any collision detection- leading to mobs ignoring walls/mountains/all terrain as they beeline for you once combat initiates. So, no 'hold the high ground' tactics, no dungeons, no doors, no point in building walls etc etc.

It really is a shame, as the initial few months generated a great sense of community as we the players organised ourselves to complete some truly gargantuan craft-based tasks that were required to free (unlock) new playable races for future immigrants to the game.

With the parent company now having filed for bankruptcy protection and their hosting company trying to reclaim the use of their servers after several months of unpaid fees I fear the worst for the game's future.

*sigh* all the above notwithstanding, I still have an account and play on the European ICE shard... maybe we'll find a light at the end of the tunnel.
