whatever works for the game.
as for how to pay, paypal is clearly the best method. the developers can't 'accidentally' charge you more, randomly renew your subscription, or automatically start it after a trial.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I will only play games that charge a flat monthly fee. Anything else is a pain in the arse.
Agreed. I especially hate cash shops

Subscriptions. I haven't found a game I enjoyed playing thats F2P/Cash shop.
Subscription with credit card is preferred for me. I support RMT, but I wouldn't play in a game with an item shop unless every item in the shop was available for loot in the game, and the item shop represents player sales, not items conjured out of thin air by the devs.
Subscription. And like paulscott said, paypal preferably. Time cards in major retail shops would be good too. Too much crap happening with credit cards nowadays.
Subscription based game.
Its best to keep all the options open, such as PayPal Credit Card PayByCash GameCards and what not...
Why?
Because the more money they expect to make with subscriptions the more effort they will do to make the game better. X represents the input and Y represents the output...
If you're making a game and expect no profit you're gonna be like "Hell, play it if you like it... F off if you dont" and if you're expecting profit you'd be like "Ok I have to make this one hell of a game so more and more people wanna play and subscribe.

Lifetime subscription, like Guild Wars or LotRo
subbies
ooh someone above mentioned the trouble with credit cards lately and it made me stop and think.
Maybe pay cards are the way to go...those ones you buy at EB games and the like....never bought one but that would be more secure actually.
but a hassel
Subscription.

I'm curious to see how Mythos will do with it's F2P +Ingots model (essentially a cash shop model). I enjoy the game, but would never pay for ingots. I would pay for a small monthly membership for Mythos, though.

Most credit card fraud occurs as a result of somebody getting physical access to your credit card information:
If you do business with a legitimate company through a secure website, you have less chance of being defrauded than if you hand your card over to the criminal taking your order at a restaurant. Obviously, fraud happens even with legitimate companies (stolen laptops or hacking), but it's far less frequent than physical fraud. Here are some links:

I enjoy pay to play games much more.
Though I don't mind free to play during my limbo periods.
===
Currently Playing: Guild Wars 2
Subscription is prerferable.
ofcourse free to play
but in subscription, i'd like hourly prepaid - something i wish wow had. i don't get much time to play, maybe 5-8 hours a week tops. so i don't want to end up paying for a month for a few hours of game time.
As for me? Subscription based really.
F2P games are usually lacking very much, with only one venue of play, wich is the long combat wombat grind. Look around you on F2P games, and thats realy all you get, a neverending grind, with the same classes renamed(never seen a skillbased f2p), crafting nonexistant(placing a loot on a weapon is not crafting), quests even more basic than current AAA titles, and usually even make less sense. Oh and most F2P games doesnt think they will earn much anyway, so they don't bother to pay a few translators to translate their games into understandable english even.
The last of the Trackers
I get much enjoyment out of indy and smaller game companies. As such someday I'm likely to fall for a dark and light type thing, they seem legit for a few months .
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
A question I think deserves a multi-situational/tier answer.
When I'm on my desktop I prefer paying a monthly sub to support the professionals that created that game. I will admit the lifetime options intrigues me though. I just hope they continue supporting the devs.
These conditions asume the game have enough pros to outweigh the cons of continued participation on my part.
If I'm on the fence about a game, or making it my second game, I usually like to use a game card instead. I know might not make sense but that's just how it works here.
When I'm on the road and don't know how much time I'll be getting in, I like to play a free to play game on my labtop. Probably with a item mall because while having to be a member to use "X" item and/or advance my level sounds cool at first, it's just not my cup of tea.
Just got into the f2p games due to traveling circumstances so feel free to lash at me on that one if I'm incorrect there.

i like the guild wars pay system
only pay whenever you want ( in the view of new chapters )
this system works the best for me , as i don't have much time to play
F2P is just LAME
especially the ultimate grind grind grind games
Make a high quality, accessible, casual friendly and beautiful MMO that is micro-transaction based and I'm totally in.
My prediction is the WOW killer is going to be Blizzard themselves... by not seeing the writing on the wall with F2P/micro-transaction based payment/gameplay. Now that they've reached the pinnacle of MMOdome, Blizz automatically assumes they know EXACTLY how to build MMO's. WOW is an substantial improvement on many aspects of MMO gameplay, but it is still an iterative improvement. There will be more MMO's. And if they don't pay attention to the growing trends and where the genre is headed, if they get all arrogant and full of themselves like SOE did, then WOW II is going to fall flat on its beautiful face just like EQII did.
RMT and micro-transactions are the future, like it or not- it's the only way to access the potential player base beyond those already in games using the subscription model.
