Does such a thing exist in MMOs?

I'm looking for something specific.  I used to play MMOs back in the EQ day but left because it bored me to death.  I've poked around in games like EVE-Online and looked at lots of games and none of them seem to be the kind of thing I'm looking for.  I don't think it exists, to be honest, MMOs seem to be mindless grind-fests and PvP playgrounds.

I want something that's more of a sandbox, that's geared primarily toward roleplaying.  That doesn't mean there are a couple servers where roleplaying is put up with, I mean a game that is made for roleplaying.  I don't want to deal with PvP "oh look, something is moving, let's kill it" nonsense, I don't want to deal with gear grinding, I want a place where people actually... you know... TALK TO EACH OTHER and roleplay.  I also want that place to be reasonably free of illiterate 12-year olds looking to get laid.

Basically what I want is to recapture the feeling of paper-and-pencil, around-a-table roleplaying online.

I don't think it exists.

Prove me wrong.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more

Matrix Online is by far the best game i've come across when it comes down to role play. But It's not much of a sandbox. So I'm not sure whether it's the right one for you.

Thanks, but I already said no fantasy.  I appreciate the suggestion though.

Edit:  Oops, sorry, I thought I had said no fantasy but I apparently missed it.  Okay, no fantasy.  Mostly I'm interested in either science fiction or interesting variations on the modern day.  Can't say I've seen many historical games that are all that interesting to me, sorry.

I only say sandbox because I don't want to get caught in one of those annoying stories that you're dragged through by the nose whether you want to go or not.  That's what I detest about the whole Final Fantasy genre of games, you're not really playing a game, you're watching a barely interactive story that you only really play by hitting X all the time.

So long as Matrix isn't like that, it shouldn't  be a problem.

Roma Victor might be something you would like... its on the games list. I havn't played it, but judging by what you seem to want, it seems to fit. Be warned though, the graphics arent very good... but it seems to have a lot of stuff to do, decent RP, and no real "quests". The community also seems very accepting of new players.

Plus its on sale right now.. $20 US, and no monthly fee.

check out the forums on their website for more info, and such... if i was you, and you seem interested, i would post there asking questions to see if the game is for you before you buy.

ROFL is all i gotta say about this above suggestion..  Dont bother reading the features as pretty much not even half of the things are put in, and besides that the thigns that are put in are completely different then what is said it is.

Anyway moveing along... Wurm online although put under fantasy is not very fantasyish... Kinda hard to sit and explain it through typeing as i would fill up a few pages worth of why its not... But I can tell you this, it is the most balanced game when it comes to fantasy I have come across and i have been gaming for a long time.  One fantasy thing is becuase of Lore, they added Lore to the game which is nicely balanced or so it seems thus far. Basicly rather then just warshoping somehting that does nothing you can follow a religion in game and become a priest and actually do something with the lore, cast blessings on items and weapons and stuff like that. Another Fantasy aspect is the trolls and goblins that are in forests. But for the rest of the game most is pretty much what you asked for...

The players are what makes and changes the world, they run and make everything. All tunnles and land bridges and pyrimids are all players made. you can raise and lower elevation of the landscape, mine through mountians, build foritifications and so on. The PVP is not just hey something is moving kill it, its actually planed, as you will go no where just raiding somoene with 2 people becuase just about all built up villages are very well fortified. So again dont pass on just the part that it is fantasy, believe me I hate fantasy games and after i quit UO and played many other games such as WOW and SWG and RS which wasnt really that bad, but after playing all those fantasy grind type games the list goes on, I hated fantasy and wouldnt come near any of them... I changed my mind one day and glad i did it, or i would not have found the fun game play Wurm has to offer.

Sorry for the long post good luck just trying to let you know that Wurm is not what you think it is when you hear fantasy, its only labled that as it has some fantasy type things but very balanced and very much game play is realisum in the medeval period. Good luck again with finding the game you are looking for.

The flame wasn't really nessecery.  Based on what he said he wanted, the game seems to fit. Wurm also has like 10 people online at all times... im sure RV has more than that, but maybe I'm wrong.

Also I didnt say read the features.. I said go to the forums and ask questions to see if its the game for him.

    Easy.

Thats the thing it was not actually a flame, it was the god honest truth of all the things NOT working in RV. As i went on to mention that the features are untrue, is becuase any new player would firstly read the features and get bought on that alone, and again they are untrue.

I didnt mention anything about the game not fitting his category, I was simply explaining the long line of problems and features that are non exsistant.

Also as a player of both games, i can verify that Wurm has at minimum double the average poplulation... And that is average figure, prime time is another story and that number just rises.

Anyhow to the OP good luck with finding your type of game, honestly there is not one single game that fits as all games have their problems, I was just pointing some out with RV, and not saying Wurm is polished either, but at least the game play part surely you can say is.
