Activision CEO Bobby Kotick floats the idea at an investor conference.
by Ryan Geddes
March 4, 2008 - Speaking to a group of investment analysts today, Activision CEO (and soon to be Activision Blizzard president and CEO) Bobby Kotick said the company is considering turning its Call of Duty franchise into a massively multiplayer online game.
Kotick briefly touched on the idea in answer to a question at the 2008 Morgan Stanley Technology Conference about how merging Activision with Vivendi Games might open up new opportunities for both companies.
Before closing its deal with Vivendi (which owns Sierra and Blizzard), Kotick said Activision looked at five years of data on U.S. publishers' attempts to break into the MMO market. Most resulted in failure, cancellation or low profit margins. By teaming up with Blizzard, which has proven its online mettle with World of Warcraft, he said Activision can not only pull in WoW's subscriber base to strengthen its balance sheet but also to learn from the company's veterans how to undertake new projects.
That could include tapping Blizzard talent to figure out how Activision might take Call of Duty in an MMO direction, Kotick said. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, developed by Infinity Ward, was a huge hit for Activision in 2007 and routinely appears at the top of Xbox Live's weekly list of most-played games.
Kotick only touched briefly on the CoD MMO idea and went on to discuss the future direction of the Guitar Hero franchise, which will likely see user-generated content and more tie-ins with Vivendi's Universal Music Group going forward.

It doesn't offer enough information for me to make a decision.
no.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
QFT. Nowhere near enough info to make a decision either way.
Short Answer: no.
Long Answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I don't see how this will differ from WWII Online
hell yes I'd play it. Infinity Ward knows what good PVP is bout'. I know I got cod4 here.
the only good thing about a COD MMO would be the end of the series
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
You bet ya, in a heart beat.
Call of duty isnt limited to ww2, you should check out cod4
FoE Fist of the Empire
Only if Infinity Ward made it.
Would You Play a Call of Duty MMO? Well....YES.....or atleast try it.
I'm still waiting for a WAR MMO, and no i do not mean WAR the orc type of game that is coming but a war game like Cod made into a MMO, i mean we DO NOT HAVE that yet, sure we have WW2 online, but sorry the game didn't appeal to me graphicly, due to being so long in game my eye's want the pleasure in frnt of my my system can handle. I'm not saying WW2online is a bad game cause some of it's feature's are pretty decent, but i would like to see the graphic style of Cod type of game made into a MMO.
It's almost uncharted ground, so i don't know why it han't been touched much sooner then only one game in that segment. There are a few muds but still like i said none of them appeal graphic wise to me.
Well depends on how they set it up. I would love an FPS and have been thinking of ways to get a project with a FPS MMORPG off the ground for many years. WW2 online was ok, very buggy and totally outdate. It would be nice to have one with updated graphics, updated physics and all that. Im sure if they catered to the FPS crowd and not the mmo crowd it would do well..
Why play it as a MMO when you basically get all the benefits right now? As soon as it becomes massive all the cool things about FPSs go by the wayside. Aiming becomes sketchy. Lag, latency and collision detection all become inconsistent and frustrating like in PlanetSide. I'll stick to 20 vs 20 or 40 vs40, no monthly fee, no lag, no rubber banding, no "I just shot him,,,whoops no I didn't", no whining about who's overpowered or gimped, and no downtime or traveling..thank you very much.
If I want to play an FPS, I'll play an FPS. These MMOFPSs always play like bad MMOs and bad FPSs combined, because the tech can't support it until we're all on Fiber. I'l happily wait until it can be done right than suffer through too many annoying compromises. I don't mind developer attempting to do it, but every single attempt so far has been DOA.
A modern war mmo would require a totally different take on mmos. It would have to have the entire process of training and character building, would have to include ranks, it could have an xp level system. It would have to have a very active conflict system, as in active small battles and small scale conflicts that lead up to a big war, and that war would have to have a purpose that lasts months(realtime) at a time. It would have to be fast paced, based on player skill, played like an fps and not as a traditional mmo.
It is very difficult to do, and if it could be done well i would play it. But i dont think we are at that point where we can pull that off.

It wouldn't be targeted at you guys (MMORPG players) It would be targeted at the FPS CoD crowd that is already built in. The CoD franchise is one of the most popular in the market.
Like others have said, not enough info to say yes I would play right now but I honestly don't see why not.
There already is one. It is called 'Americas Army' and it is completely free to play.

It's just me, so open the door.
Nope. I hate FPS MMO type games. The lag makes it frustrating. Maybe if everyone can ping around 30-40 and not go above that it may be worth it. But if I have 150 ping and the other guy has 20, who is going to get off the shots fastest?
WW2 Online is already up and running.
I'd play a persistent world MMOFPS.
I played and enjoyed Planetside.
I don't think I'd play it for more than one month however as Call of Duty is a terribly boring game.
Not a chance. I don't play FPS games for a reason; I hate them, I've always sucked at them and I don't think they are especially fun to play.
"UO is already up and running"
I'll play any MMOG that is worth playing. Not much more that needs to be said.
I'd quite like to see another decent MMOFPS (like Planetside was) released, and WW2 seems like a good setting. So yea, I certainly think the idea has legs.
I liked WWII online when I tried it and don't understand why no one has made a MMO similar to it. The thing with WWII online is it left me wanting more, more theatres, more vehicles, just more. I feel that a new MMO based on WWII would be great.
