"Death is a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations of respect, even by those most familiar with him." - Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce
I don't know what kind of person I'd be without the experience of roleplaying with friends. D& D was the first..and though I don't pen and paper it these days...It undoubtedly influenced my creativity and sharpened my imagination. I thank Mr Gygax for his contribution and enrichment of my life. I'll remember him as a Great friend...one i never met ...and thank him for all the friends I made on his behalf... I can only hope to meet him in some afterlife...and that it is as fantastic as the lives he assisted me in creating...you will be missed DM. Sweet Dreams.
Reading these posts, seeing that many people had the same experiences I did... I remember my beginning, with AD&D, the wonder of imagining an entire world, living in it, interacting with it. And then Vampire, Werewolf, and then back to D&D. The Saturday afternoons with friends, laughing, playing, battling, hunting, creating... And the recent times: MMORPGs. The fun, the interaction... All because of this man.
Don't rest in peace Mr. Gygax: keep fighting, riding, casting, dodging - mastering! Wherever you are.
I posted 2nd on this topic today and i feel as though my post did not do this pioneer justice.
After reading through ALL the posts (with watering eye's and all) and seeing how he has touched so many lives in a similar way as he touched mine, there is not much more to say, other than he was, and always will be...our 1st and most missed DM...
The gamming industry has lost a man among men that few will ever measure upto....
KASE (Killer 80.00%, Achiever 53.33%, Socializer 40.00%, Explorer 26.67%)
UO, EQ, AC, AO, Shadowbane, DAOC, Horizons, Lineage II, FFXI, PS, SWG, EQ2, WoW, City of Villans, Tabula Rasa, PoTBS, Vanguard, GW, AoC, WAR, DF1, Aion,Champions Online, DC Universe,SWToR, GW2, PS2, DFUW beta in that order I think. (And a lot of f2p games)
Count me as another person influenced by this great man. I came to D&D and tabletop gaming late, in my teens in fact, but it still affected me profoundly. I was constantly daydreaming, lost in my own head. Gaming gave me an outlet for that and a way to translate my dreams into...well, not reality, but substance of a sort (especially when I was running the game). It fired my imagination and gave flight to my thoughts, and for that and more I salute the great man.
Rest in peace, Mr. Gygax. You will be missed.

Heard about this yesterday and was saddened. Glad someone brought it here.
Gygax had such a huge influence on my life. Due to him and Tolkien I started my writing career... Due to AD&D I started my game development years with MUDS and MU's and eventually on to other networked projects which eventually led me to becoming a network engineer. It's very sad when someone who influenced you so strongly passes away.
I shall miss you Gord the Rogue...

I wish I could see profound thoughts and words, but my heart aches and the emotions take over me here. This weekend I'm planning on busting out some old hardbacks, and rolling some dice, and remembering everything this man has brought us. God bless you, Mr. Gygax. Your work has brought together so many people who would have otherwise just past each other by.
I was genuinely saddened when I heard this. What this man created helped me escape the awkwardness and mediocrity of adolescence. He was man unafraid of imagination and formed a structure where all of us day dreamers, misfits and nerds could exercise that imagination. He is one of the most important people from that time of my life, and his vision of storytelling was amazing. Everything MMO is merely a pale imitation of what he brought forth. My condolences to his family, and God Speed.
Here's one of many nice little articles written about him. It features a general timeline of rpg, and mmorpg, related happenings. Even a young Lord British.....
There really should be something on the front page of MMORPG due to the fact that they owe respect to the man that inspired the industry we call MMORPG's today. Without Gary and his little books of rules that he and his buddy released back in 1974 there'd be no EverQuest, no Ultima Online....there would have never been a game we grew up with called Dungeons and Dragons and without it none of this would be as it has come to be.
Gary brought many, many people hours and hours of enjoyment, and fun to our world...not just the US but the whole world. How many people can say they gave something to the world that was good for it. Gary's game was good for it and we're reaping the enjoyment everytime we sign into a game like EverQuest or Vanguard.
Thank you so much Gary Gygax for your game and for inspiring us all to take a little time out of our lives and to use our imaginations to take us to places filled with magic, wonder and friends. You'll be missed, but you'll not be forgotten.

any way we could get something about this on the front page?

My sympathies to his family. R.I.P Gary
He made his mark on the world, may he rest in peace now.
The Empty Chair
Eulogy for a Gamer
There is an empty chair,
at the table this day.
A hallowed place where,
a friend once played.
The roll of his dice,
my ears long to hear.
Or perhaps it would suffice,
if he should suddenly appear.
With character sheet in hand,
and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.
All his friends would stand,
as he sat in the empty chair.
I hear his voice a-callin’,
and it ties my heart in a knot.
For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen,
You must play for those who cannot.”
We conquered worlds on the run,
he and I in the name of fun.
And as others may come and go,
I make both both friend and foe.
But what I long for most,
is our past now long a ghost.

Rest in peace, and may you find new adventures in whatever lies beyond.

Gary Gygax gave wings to my imagination to fly, a debt I could never repay. R.I.P. bud.
