Like others have said I think COH is the most noob friendly. SWG is also pretty noob friendly, the skill system is very easy to undertsand. Lastly some may not agree with me but I think that daoc is very noob friendly. It really depends on your class. You could play a fire wizard and the game would be just as simple as COH, or you could play a rogue class and end up having to learn alot.

Overall I wouldn't suggest getting a mmorpg just because its "noob friendly"

My first mmorpg was anarchy online, and its among the hardest to learn.  But its still doable if your dedicated.

Well I'm not familiar with this genre, that's why I was looking for noob-friendly games.

I guess that's the trade-off. CoH is very easy to learn - but unless they give you other things to do I can't imagine playing it for 6 months or something like that.

So far (only based on a few hour trials in other games) CoH doesn't give you an idea of what most mmorpgs are really like.

That is untrue, most japanese players are way higher level and so the people for the first 40 levels are 80% english speaking.    Probablly even higher now since there are plenty of americans that have lvl 75 jobs.

I would say go AO first, but that will spoil you  with high amounts of character building that no other game can match.  So future games will allways be a slight disapointment.

DAoC and FFXI even more so  are cookie cutter games, so you can build your character farely easily withouth much knowledge, however you can gimp the crap our of your DAoC character if you don't read up on what to raise for your class.

AC2... well I just have to look at the box and see the fugly chicken-lizard race and I gag, so thats all I can say for that game.

Someone mentioned neocron... yeah neocron has people near max level that go into the newbie hunting areas(not MC5, but the sewers)  and kill new players to feel better about themselves.   I didn't mind after the 10th time I was killed  in the first 3 hours of playing(pre-MC5)  but I can see how others would.

I think Disney has some online game.... could try that image

Edit: Oh yeah forgot what I was gonna say...   Like mentioned by someone else, the next generation of this genre is comming out with games like Everquest 2, World of Warcraft and such.

If I was you    here would be my plan... download the free trials for all the games out, starting with the older ones like EQ  and  Asheron's Call  and play them until they expire.

You will spend alot of time relearning the controls for each one.. they seem to get worse and worse the newer the game is.   You will also notice how the newer the game is, the more crap they leave out, but have better graphics.

By the time you've tried alot of them   EQ2 and WoW  should be about to come out in stores.    Then you can read the reviews with the features they have, see what has the most of what you like after your experience with the others, and purchase one.

Alot of the MMORPG on the list  are worthless piles of crap, so If you need suggestions on which ones are worth trying, not because they are good, but just for the experience and to burn time,  I sure there are lots of people here with plenty of suggestions.

Anyhow, hope ya find a good one... I've tried tons and still  don't have a permanent one.    Anarchy Online is the one I go back to the most though.

I thought they meant something on the order of....noob and pwned (or maybe something more specific to a game) - still don't know what most of it means image

CoH is fun. Sure it has nothing to do, but blasting away baddies if fun all the time.

AC2 has most friendly interface and easy gameplay. but for newbie i would reccomend Horizons, at least the free trial.  know about their financial problems but they seem on good track with the prepared changes to their worlds. i played HZ for 4 months or so with my daughter ad it was not all that bad.

DAOC  is strange, i didnt not like the graphics nor the gameplay but maybe its ebcause i am strage :-) AO is hard to learn if you do not have a friend to explain the complex stuff, and the interface is clumsy. If Sci-Fi is your cup of tea, i would recommend this over SWG but thats just my opinion which is not often the mainstream.

I think it really depends on what kind of game you like playing.

We had a 'noob' in our hoffice who tried Horizons and absolutely loves it. Reason is that crafting is really the best I have come across, so if you like crafting, this is the game for you.

I am basically an adventurer/fighter and love Horizons as well. The atmosphere is great, gameplay is great, graphics etc.

I know Horizons got a bad rap when it was first released however the devs have been working so incredibly hard on that game and it is turning out to be a great game.

As a beginner, I would not advise you to play any PvP type game as yet, it is difficult to get used to just getting killed by other players sometimes without reason if you are only starting out in Multiplayer gaming.

This is good advice. I would advise you to take it. I started out on eq, then went to daoc. then i became a MMO slut and played them all, but i always come back to SWG and DAOC (MY FAV GAME OF ALL TIME IS DAoC)

Not to give FFXI a bad rap, it may be a really great game. However, I purchased it and it is very expensive, then went through a huge install, which in itself was unreasonable.

When I eventually got into the game the key commands were so difficult that I could hardly work out how to move around. I decided to give up on it after spending two days trying to work out this system.

I cancelled the account eventually even though I already had paid for a month. When I tried to get back into the game and logged into my account, it said my account had been cancelled. Doh, I knew that. Tried to get back in and even tried to PAY again but it will not let me do anything, keeps asking for my cd key and then says that key has been used.

However logging in with all my original passwords, that I had written down, will not work.

There seems to be no place you can contact to complain about this issue. Since the game anyhow did not interest me after all my experiences with it, I decided to drop it in the garbage bin.

Yeah I never felt more retarded when starting any other game compared to as bad as FFXI.  The first hour of that game I could barely walk anywhere comfortably... spent the first 2 hours remapping the keys and getting so it was playable.     Game is made more for a PS2 controller then mouse/keyboard.   Eventually after time it was easy and had no problems though.

I tried to go back to FFXI as well after a break.   They are one of the few companies that mean "We will keep your characters for 3 months after you cancel" when they say that.     After reading around, there were alot of people who had their accoutns permanently suspended for it being canceled for so long.   The only way they can ever play again is to buy the game and use the new CD keys.   Lame eh?    Also what I didnt like, Is they don't prorate your subscription.  When they say its a monthly fee, its a month as in January, February, etc.  Not 30 days like other games.      I signed back up on the last day of the month  and was billed the monthly fee for 1 day lol.

Oh well, luckily there are so many new games comming out.

Eve online didnt  get mentioned much, so i thought i would add my two cents worth on it.  It has a very steep learning curve, which is not typicaly been know as noob friendly.  It does on the other hand have one of the best online comunities going, and as such is noob friendly.  The game is one of the more complex (if you want it to be), and most open ended.  Being such it can be daunting for the individual solo player, some would see this as a challenge, others as a big drawback.  PLaying with others in eve, as a corp or alliance or gang can greatly increase the ease and fun when playing.

Some features in eve that are noob friendly are that even though pvp can be a big part of the game, there is a huge safe zone, where the npc police / security forces reign supreme, so you dont have to worry about griefers ruining you day.  The people, as i mentioned, are incredibly friendly, and CCP's (dev team) in game admin / noob helpers are incredibly helpful, at least from ive read bout them on various forums.

Un-noob features are a ridiculously complex world, which to me is a plus .. as i want a game that will keep me occupied for years not months.  Also there is too much to do, and rarely anyone telling you to do it.  Unlike other games that hold your hand while you proceed, eve lets you chose your own course, there is no level grinding, no objects needed to advance etc.. One advances through skill training which continues in real time whether logged in or not.

So i would conclude by saying Eve is not for everyone, and quite potentialy not for someone looking for an easy game to play.  But i do think that eve would be a friendly place for a noob to hang his gamming hat.

Although it's probably one of the most complex of the bunch, I'd say the best intro to an MMORPG newbie is AO.  Wait, before you flame me, think about it.  AO is a GOOD game.  It's one you could easily enjoy for 3-4 months or so, maybe more depending on how many classes interest you.  The complexity IS a bit daunting at first, but people do help you out quite a bit, and the solo missions from terminals are a lot of fun to do for the newbie.  Heck after coming back from a long break, the solo missions are STILL the best thing about that game for me.  You have a ton of levels (220 I think, with the SL expansion) so you get that gratifying reward of a new level fairly frequently.  There's lots of loot to find, lots of customization, lots of variety in the classes, soloability to some degree in every class if you want it...  I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that once you get a handle on AO, you're pretty much ready for anything else anny MMOG can throw at you, and THAT makes it a perfect place for a newbie to start.  The complexity at the outset is rewarded with a gratifying experience for your first few months, and most MMOGs can't say that.  HOWEVER, if you're one of those people that doesn't like learning a game with a lot of nuances, then I'd agree with some others that say DAoC is both rewarding and pretty accessible to the newbie, and good fun for quite a few months, depending on your love of PvP (which extends the length quite a bit if you enjoy it).

Couldn't agree more AC2 and City of Heros are the best begginer games..Hand down! Without a doubt. Steer clear of Lineage2 You have been warned. take heed!Final Fantasy XI is pretty good. Pain in the ass to install though

  • WrenderWrender Member Posts: 1,386
are you kidding? AO is one of the most complex games around!

  • WrenderWrender Member Posts: 1,386
GW = Guild Wars and in MY opinion it is not gonna be nearly as good as people think it will be. I wouldnt be surprised if it really sucked. Screenshots you see on various sites do not reflect actual screens as they have zoomed the screen all the way up and "posed " the characters to make a pretty shot. No way you would be able to play the game with that extreme a closeup. I played the Alpha build last year and there wasn't much to look forward to really. Even if it was an Alpha version.
