Aah, I remember the good old days me and some friends from skool were playing Runescape(Classic). We used to join a Skype room and talk about how crappy the graphics were and about how good the gameplay was. OMG, where are the days...
My age is going to be showing but who cares. I started playing MUDS back before the internet was even the internet on a local BBS that you had to use a dial up modem to call and it was like 24 baud rate I think. Been gaming ever since. You know that is not all that long ago. It was like back in 1992 or 1993. Seems like forever ago but it really isn't. UO came out in what? 1998 followed by EverQuest and Asheron's Call in 99. That is less then 10 years ago. Yea! I'm not so old! I'm not even close to being over the hill yet, which is now like what - 50+ and that is like decades away fro me.
Gemstone III on AOL when it was still pay-by-the-hour. That was a very expensive game for me.
OMG I remember it was like $2.99 US an hr back in the day and I ran my very first credit card into the dirt! It was terrible. Hehehe...but I always managed to pay it off.
Muds for years, and some off and on gpl tiled based mmo games based on linux. First mmo that could be labeled 'mmo' by current standards would be eq2, more out of curiosity and a desire to get back to the good old mud feel.. eq2 was fun for a while, but too restrictive and linear (compared to the dynamic worlds of muds which the gms would modify to follow player generated events).
After eq2.. tried most of them out there looking for that dynamic world feeling while being modern in engine and graphics. Unfortunately for me only eve seemed to fit that bill (the whole player run 0.0 universe, with its politics and resource hoarding and etc.. really dynamic) but eve was annoying in that you didn't really have to do anything but activate your guns and twirl around your target, and I couldn't stand having to wait many months to unlock a new skill, the old ones getting.. well.. old.. very fast. It was a decent model in theory, and sure the people who argue the most about it being the best system ever are also the ones whom are ahead of the gang, generally (so of course they wouldn't want it to be changed so people can catch up to them)
Had some hopes for DnL to be kind of EvE like in politics/social dynamics, but that busted when it (sortofkindof) released.
Had hopes potbs would fit the bill.. but no, that one's pretty shallow and bland once you get passed the "omg shiny new thing!" stage.
Perhaps Darkfall (flashbacks of waiting for dnl on this one.. so not much hope there) or Earthrise (bah got to wait for ever once again).
Hey you dev people, look at how popular eve's social system is.. what are you waiting for? stop trying to copy WoW and start making a real virtual world already! and no that doesnt mean faction vs faction.. your race might determine how things react to you, but shouldnt hard code you into having the other half of the players as enemies.

Hum.. well if we consider neverwinter and gemstone as mmo's.. then likely most people's first mmo was diablo 2's online play. Technically that qualifies
Runescape classic back in the day. I stumbled upon it in a java games website and was like cool other people play with you at the same time (never heard of an mmo back then).

I don't know about gemstone, but the original Neverwinter Nights WAS a real MMO. It had 1 server (AOL's), and up to 500 people simultaniously logged into the world. Not like diablo where you could only play with 4 or 8 or whatever at once.
Most people think of the singleplayer / multiplayer NWN from bioware when it's mentioned. That's a completely separate game that was NOT an MMO. Though some persistant worlds did get big enough to get closer to an MMO than Diablo 2 for sure.
Phantasy Star Online only allowed for 4 people to play together at once so I'm not sure it's considered massively multiplayer, but it was an online RPG. However since I never actually played the game online (offline mode for 5 years and counting!) I guess it technically doesn't count.
Halo 2, while not being an RPG, Was basically an MMO; just a shooter and on a console instead of a PC. I did actually play this game online over Xbox Live.
My first real techincal MMORPG was World of Warcraft. I no longer play it. Since then the only MMO game I've played is Halo 3. Hoping I might find a good one soon.
To be technical it would have been the beta test for this thing called...
Habitat.
It was a graphical multi user experience. Not sure what to call it really .. you had an apartment.. and it was on an island.. hidden priate treasure caves underneath.
Beta was around 1986 on Quantum Link. Not sure what ever happened with it because I left the service. (random fact.. QLink was a Commodore only service.. it went on to become... America Online eww).
Thats a little off topic, but anyways, my first was UO in '98.. you always fall in love with your first... you never forget the way she made you feel... *sigh*
PS Wow there is a lot of older people on this forum, now we can all tell why WoW gets the shitty ratings

Come on we aren't that old
We are "Seasoned Vets"
KASE (Killer 80.00%, Achiever 53.33%, Socializer 40.00%, Explorer 26.67%)
UO, EQ, AC, AO, Shadowbane, DAOC, Horizons, Lineage II, FFXI, PS, SWG, EQ2, WoW, City of Villans, Tabula Rasa, PoTBS, Vanguard, GW, AoC, WAR, DF1, Aion,Champions Online, DC Universe,SWToR, GW2, PS2, DFUW beta in that order I think. (And a lot of f2p games)
AnimeMUCK. That was cool because I was made a builder so I spend many many days and nights building castles, stores and rooms through MUF and MPI programming. Then Everquest of which I have many regrets.
SWG, long, long time ago. Probably would have started sooner, but didn't have any form of reliable internet until college. I blame SOE for my poor grades in early morning classes.

Since you asked:
1st MMO Comic
My first graphical MMO was AOL's NeverWinter Nights, back when you had to pay by the hour. Before that I was a PnP D&Der and console gamer.

From there I went to SWG.

Sadly, it was Runescape
The Realm,and from your list.UO
Meridian 59 then UO, Started young im 24 now. And.. i have a current active account with UO, decided to go old school before AoC comes out.
