Tigerdirect.com: Custom built computers

JK-KanosiJK-Kanosi Member Posts: 1,357

Someone here recommended tigerdirect.com for custom building computers if I really didn't want to build my own, which I don't. Does tigerdirect use quality parts? I've bought upgrades from tigerdirect a couple times in the past and have been pleased with their customer service. I also know that they do sell quality parts, but do they use those parts in their premades and custom mades is the question. I do know that most premades use some or all low quality parts, which is why it is better to build your own computer. However, I do not know if that rule of thumb applies to custom built PC's that they put together for you.

Thanks

The *barebones* systems they build have full parts lists on the website .. so you can check out exactly what they are putting in the system for you.

They used to (Dunno if they still do) build to order as well. You could call them with a parts list and they would assemble for you and send it out (not sure if they still do this though .. call 'em and ask)

I've bought a ton of stuff from Tiger to build systems .. 2 of the 3 systems i run atm were build with 90% stuff from thier site. I found them to be one of the better online parts / system places. I'd call them and ask if they still do a build-to-order program and what they charge for it (Sorry i build my own) .. you cant go wrong with thier CS department and thier return policy is top-line.

I already know they will build my custom computer, but the reason I was asking this question is because I wouldn't know a low quality part from a high quality part, since I am not a hard-ware expert. They list all the parts you can use to customize your computer and the prices, but they are meaningless to someone who doesn't recognize one brand from the next.

I guess I would have to custom build it and provide a link to it on this site for opinions.

    Thanks

I have the impression that there is no huge difference anymore between low & high quality components since margins are so low nowadays anyway (perfomance can be different but then usually price is higher/lower). Also I think all online shops buy in bulk, it's simply not profitable to buy low amounts of any component since competition is intense.
The big difference between online-shops nowadays seems to be "after purchase service": customer support, returns, warranties & such.

Edit: Nobody can really tell a "high-quality" from "low-quality" component (well maybe electrical engineers specializing in computer components can). Something that is possible is to watch for certain models that have specific issues (not really that common though), but even then either the producer or store will honor the warranty.
