Question for the WOW maniacs?

What makes this game so fun for you , I am considering trying this game once more , But I am looking for experienced players opinions and thoughts.

My 2 biggest concerns are community and fun factor..

I came back to WOW a mont ago. I have to say, community is completely broken. Only hope is finding a non-retarded guild, but this is not easy either.

Play it and see, you'll get posters who love it have no problem with the community, balance etc (such as myself) then guys like the poster above who blow all things out of porportion.

heres a nice video review of WoW ( this was from some time ago, but it still holds true) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEIwYKWShjM (dec 2006)

I enjoy the constant new content being brought to us (Patch 2.4 is coming out this month).

PVE encounters with guild. Some nights I have a great time just messing around in vent while raiding.

    PVP seasons and arena gear.

Everything that a decent mmorpg should have is in World of Warcraft which is why I play it.

I understand that my answer is quite broad, but I'm in a hurry so I had to post quickly.

You might be a bit bored leveling, but eventually it gets quite fun if you know what you want to do.  Community is generally a lot better then most people say.  I unfortunately have to agree with the above guy about the non-retarded guild, because it's true, there are a bunch of poorly managed guilds with immature people.  I guarantee you there is a good guild out there somewhere for you.

Your fun will come from stuff like arenas, instances, quests, battlegrounds, raids, etc.  If none of this interests you, WoW isn't your cup of tea.

The only reason I played WoW for as long as I did was because a bunch of my friends played it with me, now everyone has pretty much quit and its just impossible to play anymore.

My MMO experience is that community can drive fun factor all by itself.

In that regard, WoW's community varies wildly from server to server, and if you fall in with the right crowd, you'll have some automatic fun factor.

The catch is that the game does get boring and grindy in ways that I never felt with preCU SWG at its most boring and grindy, probably because for me the IP is a greater draw and and the game was deeper.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Community is totally broken in both servers I've been

A handful of decent people around but overshadowed by the majority of either elitists or ignorant people... :

Partially it's the game to play as a concept, first for being really simple thus getting lots of people so bad people come automatically...

Second I think the game's focus around e-peen + loot quality/showoff is to blame cause it's obvious it's creating a lot of "pro players".

Also with everything being a time-sink I kinda feel people step away from being players and always reminded me of business men/women running around saying "I'm in a hurry I don't have time for your non-sense" and not helping you / paying attention to you unless they have direct benefit...

Unfortunately I've come to realize that this is the wrong place for your question.  There are more people whose motives are very questionable here then there are people who are really interested in WoW.  The number of actual discussions about playing the game are about zero.  All the discussions here are about whether or not it's a good game, should I come back, why do you play, why is the end game great or why is it lousy and on and on and on.   I don't think I've seen more than a couple of threads that had anything to do with the actual playing of the game in the last month.  It's really very sad.

I've tried to go to the WoW forums, but the sheer volume of posts is simply too daunting for me.  I'd have to do nothing but read the forums all day and unfortunately I have a job where they expect me to actually do some work too.  I thought this place might be a good place to get in a little discussion about the game, but sadly there is very little of it going on.  Everyday I find myself less and less wanting to even read the posts here let alone respond to them.

Anyone know of another forum where they actually discuss game content?

    The jumping is fun.

    I love the joke emotes.

    Dancing is a hoot.

Taking my rogue to an enemy capital and then managing to escape from an angry mob of players and NPCs after killing a mage infront of them all is the greatest PVP moment at all.

Playing casualy. (not mistaking the game for an alternative reality)

    Battlegrounds and calling people retards.

And resubbing after geting a friend into it and shooting the breeze over VOIP while hunting boars.

You will have a much better time if you find your community BEFORE you get into the game.  It's not easy, but if you manage it, you can have a LOT of fun.

Sorry I was so negative in my earlier post everyone, I guess I was just a little frustrated at the lack of any meaningful conversation about the game.  I guess I was just a little grumpy this morning as we older folks sometime can get.  I realize now that you were actually attempting a real discussion on the game and I shot it down just like so many others have done to other threads, exactly what I was complaining about, so I apologize.

So to make it up to you, I'm gonna tell you a story and then you tell me whether you liked it or not.  Now, if you're not wanting to listen to your Pappy tell you a story, then stop reading now...this may get long. :)

This is the story of my last Kara visit which was this weekend.  My guild had not attempted a Kara run as of yet, however several members of the guild had been to Kara before.  We were attempting this run because a few members had never been to Kara and wanted to see what it was like and also some of us had a couple of alts that could use some loot.  Without getting too detailed we spent the better part of the week getting everyone attuned to Kara which involves spending a little time in a couple of different instances to get the key for Kara.  The key allows you to enter Kara and everyone in the raid party must have one.  Kara is a 10 man instance which is nice size raid, small enough for a small guild to run and yet large enough to spend a couple nights in.

On Friday we all joined up around 8:00 and started heading to Kara.  The first thing you realize when you get close is that while Kara is PvE content, the entrance is a hotbed for PvP activity.  You see the front of the instance has a portal where you can summon in your group members and it's common to find a group being assembled.  The fun part comes in when both an Alliance group and Horde group both pick the same time to try to assemble.  At first we were badly outnumbered and several of the group had to make trips back to our corpses, but as time went along and more people made it to the front of the entrance we gradually took control of the summoning stone and ran the horde out which is always a nice way to start the evening.

Once everyone was assembled we all went in.  Now my guild is very partial to ventrilo and we pretty much insist that everyone at least listen in.  We just find it much easier to explain what you are about to face when you use a voice software package like ventrilo.  If you don't want to talk, that's fine in fact we prefer if you don't do too much talking, but listening is greatly appreciated.  Before you actually get to start killing, you have to do a little prep work which involves buffing everyone, dropping a mage table to get some food and drink for the raid, sorting the group positions in the raid to maximize effectiveness and stuff like that.  With that out of the way the raid leader (I'll call him Stinky...cuz that's his name) started marking targets and assigning roles.  In WoW the raid leader can put a graphic on top a mob as a way of signifying he has some special importance.  For instance Stinky likes to use the skull graphic on the first target for each fight so everyone knows what we are suppose to be attacking.  Other graphics like the pink diamond, green triangle and orange nipple (don't ask) get assigned other roles like one that will be sheeped, shackled, trapped or feared to keep them busy until it's their turn to die.  Finally we are ready for the fight to begin and the main tank, who happens to be our good friend Stinky will start us off to build up hate.  Yeah, that's right, hate.  You see mobs have a hate table and whomever is on the top of the table the mob will attack, at least in most cases.  So your main tank needs to quickly establish the top spot on the hate list and keep it until the fight is over.  It gets interesting when someone like a well geared Mage or Warlock starts pumping out damage and ascends to the top of the hate list.  That makes it fun for the healers who would prefer to try to keep alive the main tank who is built to withstand some punishment rather than the squishy Mage or Warlock.

Well after a few mob pulls, a few deaths by folks who pulled aggro and a couple deaths by Stinky who wasn't particularly well equipped for this run, we managed to get into a rhythm and made it up to the first boss and downed him pretty quickly.  A couple of nice shiny purple items were distributed to lucky winners and everyone grabbed their couple of badges to keep until they gathered enough to turn in for a nice shiny new piece of equipment.  Everyone added a few congratulations to the winners and off we went toward the next boss.  Things got a little interesting next when one of the mages found out that doing an AoE on a pack of trash mobs, while a very nice idea should probably be accompanied by a well timed Paladin bubble beforehand.  You only make that mistake once.  The next boss was only slightly more difficult once it was made clear what everyone's role was to be.  It took about a 10 min long conversation to get it organized, but we actually downed him in 1 try.

It was at this point that we had to drop one or 2 members to bring in others for one reason or another and the raid started to bog down, but we passed the time by making fun of each other's equipment, names, lack of skill or what have you.  One thing you gotta remember to bring on any raid is a sense of humor.  One person taking it a bit too seriously will wipe the raid faster than Leeroy Jenkins.

It took several tries to down the 3rd boss and only after we realized that our healers just couldn't keep up with the damage being dealt and had to bring in a ringer from outside the guild to help power us through.  The help was really appreciated though and several virtual slaps on the back were passed around along with the phat loot.

At that point we decided to call it a night since our main tank had nearly exhausted the durability on his armor and the healers were in need of refreshing their stock of mana potions. We had the mage summon a portal to get us all back to Shattrath and agreed to meet up again in 2 days.  Everyone went and compared repair bills and discussed the best gems to socket into gear, while the raid enchanter disenchantend the items that were unusable and let everyone know what was being added to the guild bank for everyone to go take a look to see what could be used.

And that's a pretty typical night raiding with my guild.  Hope you enjoyed the little story.  If not...well I did warn you.

My 2 biggest concerns are community and fun factor..

Its fame alone is one of the biggest reasons, "Hmmm I think im gonna start MMO's... which one should I get, a game that is played by 10 Million people... or one played by 100,000 ?"

What do you think the person will choose?

Next is the content, yeah i'll agree... it has a lot of content...

Another reason is that for most people its the first MMO, and they just get hooked to MMO's and continue on with WoW.

I actually recently just resubscribed, WoW is NOT as fun as before the battlegrounds etc IN MY OPINION (you people may have different views... dont impose them though).

World PvP was where the fun was at, raiding barrens every now and then, having a bunch of rogues in Iron Forge sapping you... Starting wars in stranglethorn vale...

    Oh, good old times...

But now I just turn it on for 30 mins or an hour a day and do some battlegrounds etc...

And just as a side note, im bored of the game just have nothing else to do and cant pay for 2 other MMO's I like because they dont accept the country where my card and bank is... so... and also I definately am going to quit as soon as A) Warhammer Online turns out to be good or B) Darkfall releases with all its promises.

     Everyone else is playing it.

It lost its luster to me when I realised its just a big grind fest decorated with expansions and disguised by 'different' quests. For me WoW = Waiting on Warhammer(Or Conan)

Like all games, the community is what you make of it.  Depending on your goals, you can probably find a guild that suits your particular play style (PVP, Hardcore PVE raiders, Role-playing or casual friendly).  Once you do this, you can ignore the rest of the community, however I never found them to be that bad.

It certainly has plenty of players, the servers seem to get more full every month.

Long term appeal, that certainly depends on the player.  I left some time ago as I had achieved all that I set out to do. Only you can really determine that sort of thing, however there certainly are many things to do until you reach that point.

Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

I came back about 2 and a half months ago. My community isnt horrible but not great. I guess it just depends on what server you are on. What makes the game enjoyable for me is  a friend is lvling with me. SO i always have someone to quest with and not have to solo. Plus a good non retarted guild.

Like others have said... the WoW community is different from server to server.  I've been in some great guilds and I've been in some really bad ones.... and all points in between.

Due to the large number of subscribers, finding a good community/guild isn't quite like finding a needle in a stack of hay, but it's certainly challenging.

    ...

Blizzard does a good job of rolling out 'new content' and trying to keep their system working.   I will say that a majority of content seems to be 'gear' and/or dungeon/RAID centric.  That really doesn't equate to 'content', imho... but for the masses, it has gotten Blizzard by so far.  I'm hoping that some of the upcoming (near-term) updates and the expansion really help bring something 'new' to the table.... other than armor stats that are just a few points more than what you have OR a boss fight that has a slightly diff strategy to it.

As far as content in the rest of the game... there really is a lot.  One recent update did do a great job of revamping a quest-zone (Dustwallow Marsh) to help ease some grinding/levelling pain.  So they do roll out some stuff that isn't completely dedicated to CAP level/end-game.  Getting to CAP level was made easier recently, though... if that's your personal goal.

    ...

I don't play WoW because 'everyone else'.  I play because people that I know play.  Same reason I started nearly every other MMO that I've tried.

    ...

If I could improve 1 thing about WoW:  the community.  I'd say that's the biggest issue.  There really isn't anything other than RAID'ing that brings players together, that I've seen.  There's nothing 'personal' or 'meaningful' in capital cities.  If Stormwind or Thunderbluff are being raided... who cares?  But there really isn't much in the game that really promotes 'community'.  Capital cities are just places to train, hit your bank, check AH, and maybe queue for a BG.... or discuss the finer qualities of Dirge, Chuck Norris, and your/my mother.  I'm not saying that the landscapes need to be filled with player houses/towns... but the guilds I've been in really only got together to RAID/loot... schedule next raid.

Oh gosh WoW that was a dark period for me. Let me explain my point I'm very OCD and anything I do I become obsessed with my friend was lvl 30 when he convinced me to get the game and I had him passed in very little time. The thing that happens to me is that I don't thirst to be the best and in fact I often wondered why so much of my time was going into this game. Was it because my friends were? No, they'd probably follow me to any game that didn't suck to bad. I'd developed what I had first called my "Runescape Complex" as Runescape was one of the first MMORPGs I played and I was obsessed by that just as I then was WoW. It was worst this time around though because Blizzard did everything so well. I had trouble finding flaw in the games until recently when I quit. I highly reccomend this game even though I can find better games of different types but none combine everything so well; PvP, PvE etc etc. If you need a good server I suggest Blades Edge on US very nice group of people and probably the best I played with in my stint of craziness.

I would say the fun factor is definitely there. My biggest problem is community. Nothing like some twit exploiting a bug to kill your entire party repeatedly and using a second account to harrass you on your own faction in whisper to totally ruin your night's fun. Or, even better, needing to run one last dungeon to get your key to whatever instance and having your 70 fully-epic'ed tank say "how do I hit stuff?" (or substitute healer and "heal stuff?")

  • ThunderballsThunderballs Member Posts: 365

    lol.

The communiy is what you make it and if you have been around mmogs you should know that and have the confidence to go try any mmog idf you like the sound of it.

In most mmog and especially in an overly policed mmog like wow the community is made increasingly of a load of nubs that thinkl the game is designed solely for their gameplaystyle and like to fit in becasue that makes them feel importnat/wanted etc.

WOW is a good game but it is a very different game to waht it was but that need not put off any newcomer - a newcomers task is far easier than it ever was in many respects and more difficult in others.

An experienced dedicated mmoger will blast through the levels in wow now and find themselves able to compete in the top dungeons.  Those new to mmog altogether or preffering a leisurely star struck experience will find plenty to keep them entertained too.   There is still plenty of time to get accustomed to wow before the next expansion is released.  The expansion offers an experience similar to the launch of a totally new mmog wit ha fresh (if blurred) starting line and a ear level playing field to compete with players who have been around in the game a long time, so now is a good time to join wow.

The game is definitely fun and it is very polished for beginners. The good news is that a lot of the game is soloable (particularly in the beginning) so you are in no rush to get into a community.

Spend some time in PUGs to get a feel of whom you would like to play with.

I am in a small casual guild with few active players and i know a few people I would like to group with. The guild i am in are quite nice. No pressure and people (the few) are helpful. We would spend time just to run low level alts through dungeons.

It really depends on what you are looking for.

Since I haven't get to 70 yet, right now I am mostly looking for a few people that I can quest with and I can get invites to dungeons (which is usually no problem). I still have a long way to go (get my tailoring epics, flying epic mount ...) before I will even close to getting ready to raid. And probably the expansion will come out by then and there are other new things to do.
