5 million already?

sonicwhipsonicwhip Member UncommonPosts: 117

hi im just wondering something, does guild wars have 5 million players or just 5 million boxes sold? because if its players it has to be some kind of error i mean how would they possibly hit 5m players so soon if they never advertise or anything?

also when they hit 4 million not to long ago i read from the gw:eotn guide about Anet saying "im sure the rest 399,999,999 of you people are nice" so that probably means they hit 4m players and not boxes sold.

so now im sure they have 5m players.

Most likely boxes sold. Guild War's population is decreasing or at least feels like it.

no the 5 million is the total number of Registered accounts

that includes accounts that contain more than one campain

here is a pic that i captured from the about us part from ncsoft website

the pic was taken before the 5 million thing

It's 5 million registered accounts (as you can see in the post above), but that doesn't mean it's 5 million active users, or I would rather say that the chance it's not is 99,99%.

mmm , let me guess , all of the posters are wow fans ... maybe not

anyway , 5 million boxes sold , is what they say in the press conference.

now becose there is no monthly fee , all boxes sold are active acounts.

people dont need to pay to be able to get in and play , they have the acount , if they want , just get in and play.

guildwars is the only game i play , and the game DOES NOT feel like its losing people ... actualy it feels like we have a brutal income of noobs everywhere.

the last thing I read was GW seemed to maintain about 2 million *active* players... I can think of at least 7 people I know who bought GW but don't play it for various reasons. The population in game seems to explode on holiday events though.

I always enjoy when Neoteo posts because a lot of the time his points make sense.

However I think you did slightly over-react with your WoW fans comment...

I stopped playing guild wars everyday (which I had done for 2 1/2 straight years) back in November and I fine myself drawn back to it more and more again.  I think there are just as many people on as before but as Neo said...there is a huge amount of new players.  And as usual, at least PvP wise they all use wiki FoTM builds.

I am a PvEer by nature and the problem is, I feel I am too good at it.  Give me a somewhat competent group and I could help plow through pretty much any mission.  Obviously mistakes happen and sudden wipes occur to groups, but overall I feel I have mastered that aspect.  I know there are tons and tons of players that might be better than me out there, it is just my reasoning for shying away from the game for a while. Near 3000 hours of game time help you get a feel for things.  It has been interesting though now that we have moved our guild into a HM alliance...I am enjoying new strategy and build changing again and that is what is drawing me back little by little.

GW was and always will be my first love.

Now what would be interesting is if Anet advertised total characters like some games do...5 million x 6 characters average.  GW tops the 30 million character mark!!!!!!!!!!one!shift+1!!!one!  Remember people you can always make numbers and statistics say whatever you want and there are people who will always take them for undeniable fact.  If you enjoy GW great welcome to the club, if not move on...people should only play what they enjoy.

    ...

5 millions registered accounts doesn't means 5 millions of players.

I've bought Guild Wars about year ago and I haven't play this game for about 6 months now because it's BORING.

Go buy WoW. There are 10 millions of PLAYERS.

Well here's the ACTUAL press release that went out to all media outlets, including my station and MMORPG.com wold have had this exact press release aswell

And yes, its units sold, not registered accounts

right you are! guildwars is a great game people, and i hate all of these fights between wow and gw: you simply can't compare them! It's like comparing pong and tetris: two completly different things. And GW is more active then ever: there are bunches of noobs, and loads of good players. And GW isn't boring, you just need to get far enough to get to the fun content... looks like 90% of all people who posted here never finished any campaign (I finished every campaign and gwen), and never have been in the Fissure of Woe, the Underworld or kormir's thingie (always forget the name). And the Realm of Torment is fucking hard, but it's fun. And WoW is older then GW; around 1 year, and GuildWars his engine is still one of the best around for MMO's (even though some games are getting more beautiful, but GW was a revolution). And the engine still suprises me... nobody here ever visited the Cathedral of Flames in Hard Mode (in GWEN?)... probably not... it's hard and so beautiful... i've tried wow, and it's not a good game in my eyes: it lacks what i like, and i really don't like level grinding...
And GW has loads of players: check every district in the game at 12 pm and you'll see that there are loads of people in every city in every district (not too much in the international ones... who uses those?)

Yeah they are completely different things, WoW is a very successful MMORPG.  Guildwars is not. :)

before they started selling character slots, alot of people made 2 accounts and had to buy 2 boxes just to be able to make all the characters.  so that 5 mil is very misleading.

some people have 3 accounts just to have characters to act as storage.  arena net were very smart in holding out on certain things (character slots, limited storage space) they knew they didn't need to charge a monthly fee to make money.  and that "no monthly fee" line would sell even more copies.  smart folk!!

still I have no complaints, it's a fun little game that you can take a break from whenever you want without that mindset of, damn I need to get my money's worth better play!!

Though when you do the math, 3 campaigns at $49.99 and the expansion for $39.99  you've spent $216 with tax and if you play for 1 year that's $18/month lol.. I've been playin 2 years and got some cheaper deals so I've been paying only $8/month.  Not so bad, basically the earlier you started playing the more money you've managed to stretch out of this game.  this is not taking into account the extra character slots, skills packs, missions and what not you've bought, or having 2 accounts.  Still, not HAVING to pay every month is worth it to me and the longer I play the less I've spent per month.

Hopefully they don't shut the servers down when GW2 comes out.

They won't: Gaile Gray said that they love GuildWars and that they won't stop the game soon!

And GuildWars is succesful! I have 9 character slots without buying 1 from the shop (4 from Prop, 2 from Factions, 2 from Nightfall + 1 bonus slot from the presale of Nightfall)... GuildWars is nice, and i'm tired off all this fights between WoW fans and GW fans...

I have 9 character slots too, same way you got them.  so if you have 8 characters, and a pvp character.  that's 2 professions you can't make!! I don't have a mesmer or a ritualist I sure as heck ain't buyin another 2 character slots for $20 though.

And it's good to hear they will keep the servers up, but you wonder how much they will work on skill balances and what not when GW2 comes.  People get bored playin the same overpowered builds.

It doesn't matter if 5 million players are online at any one time - Guild Wars is one of the best selling and most highly acclaimed games in PC History. Wikipedia now puts it on par with Diablo 2 in terms of total sales:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_selling_games#PC

I'm not a super active player anymore, but I do log on for special events and to occassionally work on titles and goodies for my hall of monuments. I can say that during festival events, the servers are still packed. GW seems to be the side game many people still enjoy.

As to the WOW fanboi who called Guild Wars boring, to me boring is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, grinding titles in Nightfall or Eye of the North can suck, but grinding for rep and badges of justice also sucks in WOW.  At least GW offers double faction weekends where you can grind certain titles much faster than normal. I've also found GW's PVP far more engaging than WOW's.

about the titles , i want to add that , yes some can seam boring to get max at , but becose there are skills related to them , the reward is new game play , new skill combos .. that is just awsome.

like the ursan blessing , took me i dont remember how long to reach max norm title , but now i can join ursan teams to slain elite areas with cons ... soooo much fun , my record so far is 63 minutes clean fissure of fow all quests.

Nice big number, looks real good, but vague enough not to have too much meaning.  Units sold. they can be main game, expansions or whatever.  Registered accounts would give an idea on how many different people tried the game and how many people logged in a 30 day period would give an idea of active users.

    5 million... wow...

Am I the only one who thinks EVERYONE in the game has a bunch of set skillsets that consist of a few heals and rest damage spells?

I dont see the challenge where you basically have to kill the same guy 5 times in order to kill him, they just keep bloody healing.

No different than most rpg type games when it comes to pve. Pvp on the other hand is completely different. In Guild Wars it is all about team concept and builds.

Aye, the PvE is fun but im a PvP maniac...

I guess some people like that concept, I prefer it to be skill based.

Five Million is impressive no matter how you slice it. I just wish we were talking about Guild Wars 2 and its impending introduction(sigh).
