Starting up GW after 3 years +

Pans_FolleyPans_Folley Member UncommonPosts: 76

I am being asked to play Guild Wars after being away for over 3 years plus. I purchased the game when it first came out. I played for about a month or so and shelved the game. I have not purchased any upgrades or later releases.

Question: Will I be able to just log back in, download updates and play or do I need to purchase the latest releases before I can do anything?

Question: What can I look forward to in the updates? Will I have to relearn a lot?

Thank You all for your help!

Yes you can download and play straight away and to be helpful, I put together a guide to do that easily...  http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10247037

However, you won't have access to content you haven;t purchased (factions, nightfall and Eye of the North), but six months after release a huge new dungeon area called Sorrows Furnace was added and will be available to you when you log back in if you have gotten that far

Nope, same old same old, but it still feels good

Thanks for the link. That is way too cool. I have a lot of reading to do.

I would like to ask one more question?

I see that I have 4 charater slots available to me. Do these increase with game play and / or purchases of additional updates or am I limited to a total of 4 charaters for the game?

    Thanks again for the help!

You get more character slots if you purchase Factions or Nightfall, but not I believe if you buy the latest expansion Eye of the North.  You should be able to swing right back into the campaign with little trouble, although some outposts may have low populations. But hey, there's always henchmen!

yeah, the way it works is...

you get 2 slots for having an account and you get a further 2 slots for each CAMPAIGN you add to your account...

    So:  Account + Prophecies + Factions + Nightfall = 8 slots

you don;t get one for Eye of the North as there is no starter area in it as its all lvl 20+ content

you can however buy character slots through the in game store

Enjoy it while you can. Once GW2 launches, your characters will be involuntarily 'retired'. I'm not sure how long the GW1 servers will stay up after that, but ANet has already said in no uncertain terms that GW1 chars won't be portable to GW2.

Yep, just like EQ1 disappeared when EQ2 came out, or AC shut down as soon as AC2 came out...

Nope, I've taken a poll of guildies and resoundingly we've all decided that before making a new GW2 character, we shall finish GW1 first with a character for the bonuses from the hall of monuments

ANet have not only stated (quite loudly) that the game will be free to play, just as Guild Wars 1 is, but that GuildWars 1 servers WILL stay active until people are no longer playing the game...  Not to mention that, but just like myself (as the head of a beta guild), both Gaile and Andrew Patrick hope that guild details will crossover from Guild Wars 1 to Guild Was 2 to help guilds stay together in the transition from one game to another...  This, however, is not confirmed by the devs, although they know we want it to happen

I haven't been following it, but the last I heard, HoM is going to be little more than a buff to GW2 characters.  And as far as 'staying active', I'm taking a pessimistic interpretation of that to mean 'we'll keep the servers running, but don't expect any new content'. But I've griped enough about this in other threads, there's no need to derail this one.

It has also been stated that skill updates/patches/etc will carry on coming, as well as holidays, etc...  but no, there will be no new content for Guild Wars 1, but as Guild Wars 2 is coming, why should there be?

And as forthe Hall of Monuments, all that will offer players in Guild Wars 2 is cosmetic, fun things tosay "Yes!  I played through Guild Wars 1" and definately won't give anything that will give anyone  "buff" at all in the game as that is completely against Guild Wars ethos

You might wanna check out the official wiki for changes and removals that have occurred since you last played:

    http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Category:Historical_content

With regards to buying the other campaigns, it's not required, but is recommended to gain additional features that do not exist in the Prophecies campaign that you have.

Have fun learning the skills, that is if you want to be a competative PvPer, but if not, you should be fine.
