EQ had a lot in common with EVE, and that's what made it a hit

EQ = tough, unforgiving, figure-it-out-for-yourself game world

EVE = tough, unforgiving, figure-it-out-for-yourself universe

I wonder if the latter day popularity of EQ and the present day popularity of EVE is due to the game worlds being so tough and unforgiving.  Seems that even the slightest of achievements felt worth something.

    Totaly agree with you. the feeling of achievement is lost in modern games as most beieve that if they pay to play then they are entitled to all the top items top area's etc. Gone are they days when players were known as heroes! these days everything is given to you way to easyily. especialy levels. I have recently started to play Everquest again and i actualy read quests now! i have to...if i dont then i wont know what to do. haha how unreasonable is that!

    EQ and Eve are completely different.

    EQ

    • is a PvE game with massive PvE content.
    • You can earn levels and alternate levels by playing and gaining xp.
    • The end game is raiding.
    • your toon can explore and interact with the world.

    Eve

    • is mainly PvP with limited PvE content.
    • you can only train skills (Eve's equivalent of levels) in real time by paying your monthly subscription.
    • the end game is PvP.
    • your toon never leaves the ship's cockpit (except in a pod which is really just another ship).

    have to say i far prefer the eve method of skilling up to the traditional RPG method you are never locked into a class you class is sort of designated by what ship you fly so one day i can b a fighter the next a miner on the same character without having to start again with a new one

    also saying you dont get too leave you ship in eve is like saying well you didnt get to go into outerspace in EQ moot point i think
