Okay, does anyone else find the control of the characters in this game, uhmmmmm, confusing?

I swear that I sat playing with my roommate for an hour and still don't know wtf my character is doing.  I figured out jump and the A attack.  Oh, and how to block.  But all those did was still make me lose to my button smashing roomie.  He cheers when he wins, I ask him how he did it, and he says he doesn't know.  He just smashes buttons.

Did you by chance play the first two? I think it has the same control settings (at least if you're using the original Gamecube controller.) I haven't actually tried it on the Wii's controller and I can't say I'm looking forward to it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

    Well back to watching Lost,

    Cheers

It does help if you played the first two.

On the Wiimote, you press B to bring up your shield and the - button to grab and opponent. With the nunchuck, you press Z to shield and A+B to Grab. On the Gamecube controller, L and R shield while Z grabs.

All moves are done as a combination of a direction + A or B (1 or 2 on the wiimote). If you're using Pit, Right or Left + B will trigger the Angel Ring move in that direction. Pushing any direction + A results in a "smash" attack in that direction. BTW, almost all of these moves can be done in the air as well.

It is a very visually busy game, so it's easy to lose track of what's going on sometimes. It's very easy to lose track of where your character is. But control hasn't been an issue for me.

It also helps if you forget everything you already know about fighting games. The idea is to throw / knock the other guy off the screen. Concentrate on getting a good angle for doing that and you'll have it much easier. You will want to soften the other player up first, but I've gotten point just by throwing someone straight down from the edge in the opening exchange. If  you've never played Smash Bros. before, this will take some getting used to.

Amen, to that statement.  There are times when I look and don't know where my character even is.

Of course, this could be an excuse to get a bigger television.  Or, to update my prescription on my glasses.

I mean come on name 10 gamecube and wii games that come to the level of Oblivion, Bioshock, gears of war, KOTOR, etc.

In reality the Wii is a gimmick most of its games dont even use.

The gamecube was a joke and had practically no good exclusives and crap for online support.

The first two games were great -- the gamecube version was fantastic.  The new version is a bit tougher to play with the new control scheme  but button mashing won't get you very far when you play against experienced players.  In any fighter you have the button mashers (on SF2 - Alpha to X-men vs SF) thats just how some people are -- sometimes it works for them, but in most cases not.

I've been playing brawl and it's a great game.  To really get any kind of use out of the control schemes you have to own a classic control or a gamecube control. Thats really the way it was meant to be played. I do admit the game is very busy when you aren't battling the usual 1-4. Story mode is tough and it's very fast moving. Much moreso then the first two.  Still the playability is incredible and the story mode is really well worth it.

As for Nintendo not having any exclusives -- Note that Nintendo is one of the only systems that has exclusives worth buying the system for.  Mario - Zelda - Metroid - Animal Crossing - Nintendogs - Pokemon and all games in between and spinoffs, these games are more successful and get higher ratings then almost any game on another console.  What other games make marks on ONE particular system?  Kingdom Hearts is one for the PS3.  Halo is a good one for microsoft.  Bioshock isn't exclusive to just one system.  Vampir, you're looking for the best of a genre but you aren't looking for innovative.  Bioshock -- with how amazing it is.. is not innovative.  Oblivion is not innovative.  The wii is more then a gimmick and to this day is the front runner on "next gen" consoles.

Used to be able to do that in Street fighter 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. it's a really old criticism of fighting games in general and a weak one at that.

I guarantee that a veteran smasher can lay the hurt on someone that's just mashing buttons at random. Obviously, two complete novices have an equal chance of winning by random button mashing.

Here's a vid about pro moves in Smash Bros. Melee. They took wave dashing out of Brawl, but the rest of the turorial still pretty much applies.

Top 10 ranked games of all time according to gamerankings.com:

    1. Legend of Zelda - N64

    2. Super Mario Galaxy - Wii

    3.  Metroid Prime - GC

    7.  Super Mario 64 - N64

    9.  Resident Evil 4 - GC

That is comparing them to all games from all the systems.   The next best performer is the Playstation with 1 PS1 game and 1 PS2 game in the top 10.  Xbox360 has 1 game, PC has 1 game, and Dreamcast has 1 game.

So maybe you should actually do some research on the subject before making a fool of yourself.

Edit - and even if you use Metacritic.com ratings you still get 7 out of the top 20 games of all time being Nintendo games with 4 being GC and Wii games.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

Nintendo games really aren't all that comparable to modern FPS's and RPG's for the most part, as the majority of them have their own unique style. But as far as good games go? How about... Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker/Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros in general, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing (only because it was so unique), Super Mario 64/Galaxy, Eternal Darkness, etc. Nintendo makes some great originals, but unfortunately its third-party support is terrible.

It had some great exclusives... I already mentioned several of them. While I agree it wasn't the best console, it wasn't bad by any means. I agree with you that the online support is awful.
The wii is crappy online too.

Couldn't really have a say to this one, I've never really tried it. Nintendo just seems to miss obvious things...

Ignore Vampir or whatever his name is now. He usually post without reading actual post content, he just reads the thread title and types garbage. He was alot better when he didnt post for a few months.

Anyways back to things that matter, Smash Brothers is a hectic/chaotic type game, its ment to be like this, great attention to detail. If you want a fighting game where you back somebody in a corner and just keep hitting the same button over and over again, you need to go play Street Fighter. Smash Brothers is years beyond your league.

I like my Wii.  I play it every day.  It's fun.

I like playing bowling, Zelda, Metroid 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and even that Paper Mario game.  They're all really fun.

I like the Wiimote too.  I think it's pretty innovative.

I didn't really like KOTOR too much.  I did like Oblivion and Bioshock.  But I like the Wii games just as much.  Just for different reasons.

The problem with nintendo is a lack of third party development they have 1/10th the volume of games as any other console. So they have a small amount of exceptional games. Pikmin is about as original as carlos mencia, it is just an RTS type game on a console. Windwaker ruined the image of link eternally. Also what exactly makes metroid prime considered a great game. It is an average quest type RTS just made with the character samus and that makes people think its so great.
Super mario N64 was awesome but sunshine sucked. MGS twin snakes was craptastic.
people are more in love with nintendo then people with kankles are with mcdonalds.
Aside from 5-10 really great games since the n64 what do they have??????
I cant keep on playing the same game over and over again, aside from a few new modes in the new supersmash brothers, what is the major difference between them. Same goes with mario party. And Mario hasn't changed since mario 64 except for galaxy.

I don't see what is so difficult to understand about NIntendos success.  Nintendo out of all other consoles out right now is the most innovative.  You'd be blind not to see it.

Why are nintendo games so popular in comparison to other games?  Because they're done right -- they are easy to play -- they are fun -- and they incorporate different styles of play.  Not to mention they tell the stories of some of the most iconical characters in video games to date.  I'd much rather play a Zelda game then run through adventure mode with Johny Noname from HappySoft company.  I grew up with those games, and I'm glad to see the next generation finding the same joy in it that I did.

As for the wiimote Alot of games may not utilize it -- BUT -- every game has the option to utilize.  Developers may not choose to do it, but I'd rather actually swing a remote when I'm hitting a baseball then press the X button.  It makes the game immersive.  I like swinging my sword around then pressing A.  I like the OPTION to do it -- whereas the options you have on other consoles are completely limited.  Choice is not a gimmick... it's a privilege.  The DS (the best selling handheld) and the Wii (the best selling console) are popular because people love what they have to offer.  Thats why I buy nintendo systems.  Maybe when kingdom hearts comes out I'll look into a PS3 -- but I won't hold my breath.

One of the few Wii games that I like.  Hell, I LOVE it.  Once you get the controls down you can destroy a button masher easily.  My only complaint is the level builder could have been done better.. even if they just put less restrictions.  I hate the fact that you can't put things within 1 block of certain objects.  It makes it so hard to do certain things how you'd like them.

Zelda Mario metroid all have fanbase about the size of thsoe 3 combined. They are great games. People dont expect epic long games from Nintendo they wnat the a good story based around the characters theyve known for a long time.

I have a Wii and a 360, Wii for the fun party games and the games ive played my whole life and a 360 for the epic RPGs and occasional FPS.

I love the game i got the controls down quick with the Wii mote its really easy. Id have to say this is my favorite game on the Wii so far right infront of zelda.

@ Vampir: I still don't understand the "Gimmick" I may sound stupid but I'm really kinda lost can someone explain?

On Topic: I love this game. It's innovative and fast. The only problem I had was using the wii-mote at the beggining I used the gamecube controller for a while but the instruction book really does help and once you get the wii-mote down you'll find it more versatile.

This game is now officially on the Evo 2K8 Championship Series lineup.

I was sure that they were going to stick with Melee; Even after I had played Brawl.

Too bad I don't have the money to go to Vegas and participate.

The console's gimmick is it's stupid controller.  The motion sensing crap.  Instead of having a chance at creating a truly amazing system, a motion sensing controller was all they came out with in some 6 years between the Gamecube and Wii (if I recall correctly that's about how long it was)  They barely increased the hardware, and the gimmick is barely utilized by most games.  The ones that do it well are games that nintendo themselves did, and anything that isn't nintendo has tended to just suck.

While I love Brawl, and Zelda was awesome, the vast majority of games that make good use of the Wii-mote are arcade games.  There is no point in buying one over a 360, except for a few games.  But hey, if you're a casual gamer and just want a few games.. by all means, go for the Wii.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms
