Old player lurking around

I still check out the ww2online site every 2 weeks, check some forums to see if anything exiting is happening. So far it does not seem like it, last time i played for a few days before I gave it up due to all the DCs and low population. The game I still really like, its interesting, but it is also very empty and that is what kind of kills it for me.

Although, when they throw out one more promo for old players to come check the game out. I will be there, and perhaps the game will have changed. But not gonna pay for another month and having to stop playing after a couple of days again.

I was there at launch under Patgod, I've been thinking of coming back for the last few days oddly.  Eve pissed me off with the nerf bat this patch, so i'm on haitus.

Whats stopping me from just up and resubbing is that my joystick is on the fritz, and IIRC i'd be stuck as infantry.  I've also been hearing that the population plummeted this year, I've known the game long enough not to assume that means its going under....but i remember the days of so many people fighting for this one town with a huge cliff for like the first year after launch.

So how bad is it anyone?

You can remap controls to keyboard + mouse to play tanks and ATGs. Mouse is far superior for shooting especially for long range. Air without a joystick is impossible of course.

Infantry gameplay is very different to say the least. Because of the predictor code it is VERY hard to hit anything with rifle, so first units gone are LMGs. Close combat is not bad with SMG. Rifle? forget about it.

Population wasn't bad in November (nothing even close to emptyness of the august), but declining now as subs of some people are coming to the end (or whatever the reason is, i don't see alot of people with whom i started mid November).. A lot of allied players playing axis now just to keep game going. And of course some calling axis players pussies for unsubbing. Whatever.

And it doesn't really matter what we say here, if you have a second credit card, create a new account and see for yourself for 14 days for free.

Cool, I had loaded up the offline mode to see if it ran(was worried about vista compatability) and couldnt find a way to switch to mouse for guns n such.  But if its there awesome, I'll probably find a second CC and give it a go.

They really should "start supporting vista", I was interested in trying again a month or two ago, but that "we cant support this" msg scared me away.  I dont like vista anymore than the next person, but its what things come with now, and it does work.

PM me with your e-mail. I'll send you my profiles for tanks when i get home (it's axis only, i think, and i use joystick for atg movement, but it will be a start at least).

Vista 32-bit works for me too. But there is a memory leak issue  with it. On my 2Gb RAM i get around 2hours of normal play then game gets an error message "out of memory" or something.

Also audio on Vista is not 3-D. I have 5.1 headset and on XP i get solid directional audio feedback, i can determine range, type and distance quite precise. On Vista - no. it's just stereo.

Yeah i've got ATG's working so far.  But getting tanks to turn or move forward when set to be able to turn is acting weird.

As for sound, the "turret traverse" noise is all broken up and awful on my setup heh.

If you are using a mouse kb setup, google Sgtspoon and his site has a setup so that you can drive. Population seems quite find for fights. There were at least 4 full ews fights on last night. Summer numbers drop as people do other things. Winter is always good.

Downloads page on spoons site is fubar.  I remember him from way back, thats the weirdest thing about mmo's you remember people you've never really met even after years.

I'm gonna keep messing with it, i understand the concepts in the keymapper, i'm just doing something wrong lol.

Ask in game.. someone probably has the mouse kb setup and might email the file to you.

Well, i'm trying the 14 days free.  But third spawn in my graphics went allll kinds of weird.  Like a black fog over all of my screen except for a small square in the bottom right.

Well, suffice to say day one has been bad.  I have no idea what visual setting has gone wrong to cause what i'm getting, and since every single change requires a restart of the game, finding it is taking forever.  *sigh* its like old times :)

You can't view the forums with a subscription so there's no way to judge how interesting things are without it.

Population is high right now. Lots of battles and interesting stuff in game going on.

YOu need the lastest drivers for your motherboard, video and sound cards. You can post in the Windows help forum and get more info than here.
Air without a joystick is impossible of course.
I don't have joystick, and after struggle for sometime, I finally able to fly with keyboard on with a HUGE... modification of cfml files, and I got the ideas from sgtspoon's files actually. The keymapping using version 1.0 XML programming syntax, and it's quite easy to understand, so you probably can understand it even without much programming background.

But flying with keyboard isn't easy nor smooth ( from my experience ), so I rarely fly air to air dog fight, but flying bombers or paratroops planes if they need pilots or resupply mission occasionally.

I also remap the keys to use KB & mouse for all other vehicles, ships, & ATGs.

As for the pop, it's for sure not as many as any other MMOs cuz this is too hardcore for normal gamers, but with new TOE rules, it just make a whole lot of changes to brigades movement and HCs really have to think before they move brigades cuz it's 1 hour per move now, and the supply takes 1 hour to fully move into the new town.

Kudos to you man, this is quite an achievement. I use KB and mouse for everything too except flying ( I have CH flightstick and throttle).

If learning curve for this game is considered steep, for airwar it's a vertical line. Sharks, who spent in the air years, will rip to shreds any newcomer trying to do anything. While i mastered Stuka to the point of hitting stationary tanks, any dogfights ended for me before i even saw the attacker. Well, i'm a good tanker .

Game is finally back for the Axis, it looks like.  The population is okay.  Hopefully 1.28 will draw back the players that were driven off by the Stutters (don't reup just yet, wait for 1.28 release) as it contains mounds of performance fixes.

The main bug is, as above, the stutters.

Yes, I know I mispelled Shiner Bock. Don't blame me, blame society.

ya, 1.28 should be out any couple of days now, they are running an intermission and an open betatest right now, so that they do not have to restart a live campain for a patch.

the game may be at the beginning , it need time attract other players, if you play it for a longer time you will enjoy it.

I have been playing this on and off since 2002, never lasting enough to rise above rank 3.

Now they seem to have done IT, and I am levelling almost all my characters. My FPS has gone from lousy to 65-100 with the latest patch and it seems the added performance makes people more prone to doing big raids.

Speaking of such, here is a small thing a couple of us did during intermission last monday.  A Stuka raid constisting of 40+ Stukas. As said, that was during intermission. However since this wednesday when the patch was released I have flown many, many big raids. People just seems to like it now that it doesn't lag to pieces when you dive toward towns and/or have big furballs.

I absolutly love this game and yes the lag got better since the 1.28 release but I still notice like last night I was in a raid and my FPS went down to 3-5 as with a few others but that is a rare occasion when that happens.
