It depends on what you consider "good."

In the beginning, it's pretty interesting, there's plenty of quests for new people to do to make leveling easier. There's Party Quests that you can do with other players to also make leveling easier, but they get costly due to the amount of pots you have to buy without the normal grind and meso (in game money) collecting. PQ'ing can get tedious since the "hardcore" players tend to want to get them done quickly to get their exp, they don't like inexperienced players slowing down the process.

Once you get past level 31, leveling is a complete pain in the butt since there's no PQ for you to do (besides the newbie one that gives minimal exp). The only way to survive until level 35-40 is to buy a x2 exp coupon from the cash shop (or grind for about a week). Speaking of the Cash Shop, you'll see almost everyone running around wearing the clothes and you'll get treated differently if you don't have them. IMO, the CS is a rip off since everything only lasts 90 days (except physical changes like hair, face, skin and eyes) and then it expires.

All in all: This game is a good starter MMO, it's bright and colorful and will keep you entertained for a couple of months. If you're a MMO vet, you can try it, but you'll probably get bored really fast. Very Cash Shop dependent if you want to get anywhere good, "fast."

Its fun  until you realize you could be spending that 7 hours you just used to level in a much better way.

You wont need to buy a 2x exp, all you have to do is level from 31~35 which doesnt take that long. And after that there is a pq from 35~51 and then 51~71. You dont really need the cash shop for much unless you want to look "cool". But yeah, in this game you will have to deal with many hackers/scammers which gets annoying. And there is a lot of kill stealing depending on where you train etc. This game is pretty fun for a while.

It's true what you say but when you finally reach 31 its really worth it. Believe me.

I think MS is a good game when a few friends play it. When your alone it can be a bit boring sometimes like with PartyQuest but its a very good game

MapleStory is a great game that I have personally played for a long time. Unfortunately, I became addicted to the cash shop and spent over $100 in a single month. It was then I realized that I needed to quit.

The game can be a little difficult to get into, though it has come a long way since I started playing a few years ago. Some quests have been introduced and some areas fleshed out like the new tutorial area has been overhauled quite nicely and no longer has confusing text due to poor translation.

Probably the most difficult part of MapleStory is getting the perfect stats, which unless you're lucky can take quite a while of monotonous clicking.

You'll definitely want to visit a FAQ when rolling your stats to determine ahead of time what kind of class you will want to be. You don't want a warrior with 10 INT at the start; of course you can fix these errors with cash shop items, the point is you don't want to have to spend money if you don't need to, yes?

Anyway, once you've decided your stats, you're placed into a colorful world. By following the tutorial, you'll eventually end up in the real world, where you'll meet other players. At this point, you should level up until you are ready to switch to your first job. After that it's simple grinding, which brings me to the second worst part of this game; the Hackers.

Never have I seen a game so full of hacking. Some areas are so bad that the monsters can't respawn because the hackers broke the respawns. Hackers use creative ways to hide from your view so you can't report them. Some hackers appear on top of the roofs and the only way you know they're there is by seeing their dot on the mini-map and a trail of monsters floating towards them.

Aside from hackers there's kill-stealers. These guys muscle in on monsters you're attacking and kill them, stealing your precious EXP. "true" kill stealers are the ones that follow you and kill the monsters before you do while competitive players will just share the room with you, trying to beat you to the monster, which is acceptable behavior, but can lead to uncomfortable channels.

The best thing to do is switch channels until you find an empty one. Sometimes you'll find a channel with no monsters, which means a hacker broke it. This can get incredibly frustrating. Apart from grinding monsters, there's not much else to do in MapleStory. Some of the quests can be challenging and fun (especially the jump quests), but aren't mandatory (aside from getting some very nice gear). All in all, MapleStory doesn't seem to reward people who use the cash shop enough. If they truly cared about the people, they'd likely take a bigger stance on hacking, but right now, it's such a large part of the game, that most people just give in and start doing it themselves, especially since it's relatively easy to do.

I haven't played the game yet. I just quit runescape ( that game went downhill). So yeah, waste of 4 years.

Anyways, I was wondering, how is the community at Maplestory?

How long does it take to download? I heard it takes a long time.

What should i do when i first start playing? What I mean is what kinda character should i get and what should i start doing to get a good start?

    Thanks,

    Matt

And yes i think its a little addicting but i would have to say i dumped the game a few times for like LOTRO and city of hereos?villians and Mabinogi....... But somthing about this game makes me keep coming back....I like it and i have 2 friends in real life playing too.

It is a fun good graffics game and good to try.

My sever/world is Mardia. Mardia FTW!!!!!!

I got addicted to this game for two years, I have a level 90 priest, level 38 assasin (cass), and 86 f/p mage, lvl 47 cleric, and lvl 70 sindit (mardia), but I'd say this is a terrible game.  =( sorry, but I think it's pointless to keep killing mosters to level up and be able to kill higher level monsters.  I almost gone crazy by keep pressing the same letter on the keyboard for hours and hours >.<

Yes this game is addictive and it has the potential to suck your life in, so I just want to say becareful.  If you are not addicted to this game, great! I wish I was not =(  If you are addicted to this game, hope you do not let maple to take control of your life.  Afterall, all game companies want are children's money.

    1) I have friends in this game who got too addicted and skipp school/classes several days a week to play maple and train his/her characters (me, a friend in mapleSEA, and one in mapleGlobal)

    2) Use parents' credic card and accidently over charged it. (my guild master)

    3) Take maple too serious and as if it's things in real life, but maple is just a game. (3 girls, 2 in mapleSEA, 1 in mapleGlobal took their maple boyfriends as real life ones, and their emotions were hurt because of it)

I know those people well, they were all very good people, my favorite maple friends, but I felt bad about what happened to them.  Later this week, I asked nexon to reset my 2nd question for my account since I can't remember what it was, which I can't use it to reset my password, and apparently, nexon thinks this is not my account if I don't know my secret question, and in response, nexon banned me from maplestory.  I spent ~$60 on the game (kinda a lot...), a lot of time (that I should have used to study), and I have ~100million mesos and 15k NX cash left in that account that's been banned.... it's time to quit o.o

I'd say that I did meet a lot of people that I treasure the memories together, and even though it is a game, those memories were real ^^~*.   Good luck on trying out the game, if you ever get addicted, just remember you are also responsible for your real life, and it is more important have achievement in the real world (my lessen). n_n

Well, I must agree with you. This game is/was very addicting. My opinion about it is that it isn't the grapic in this game that does the thing. It is the game plan, you do the most simplest things, like doing some quests and after that you will grind, grind and repetley grind again. Maybe some PQ's will do the thing and soon you will realize that you are addicted. And if you aren't grinding, grinding and grinding you are probably in the free market buying things and then sell them for a higher price. And you thing that spending $60 is much, then I must say that I've played this game since the Beta and I spent almost $200.

To some this game is their life.  (kinda sad, why not waste life on a better game?)  But to the other some, this game is grind and outdated.  It has a charm to it, but it begins to get boring after the first bit.  Try it out id say, everything is worth a go.

PLZ!PLZ!PLZ! Do not play this game. Zomg i have picked up and stopped and picked up again to finally relize there is no point to this game. You play only to see large orange and purple numbers fly up above the monsters head. There is no story line and no pvp(for america and almost everywhere else). And i will not start on the cash shops or i will be writing 2-3 pages on how bad it is. O right there is made hacking in this game. Its so commen if you YOutube it there are instructions.

Oh and for those out there i was(so shamed) a lvl 121 DK(you know wat it means).

This game is only good if you are social, if you plan on lvling by yourself your going to be bored... This game becomes a grind unless you do party quests which have become pretty abundant recently. With the addition of monster carnival there is now some sense of pvp. Basicly competeing to see who can kill the most monsters and summoning monsters to kill members of the opposeing party. Basicly this game has been steadily going from total grind and nothing but hackers and jerks to slight grind, a friendly community (in most cases), and nearly no hackers. Over the past year nexon has been making some SERIOUS improvements to this game especially with the addition of monster carnival which gives some sense of pvp. But when compared to the likes of WOW this game is free for a reason. This is one of the best free games i've played but when compared to games such as WOW this game is left behind.

I agree with deadsun, the CPQ, LPQ, HPQ, RPQ, APQ, FPQ, as well as the two GPQs are testing your skill of leadership, and your social skills.  When you reach higher level, you go to zrun and Horn PQ can get pretty intense.  Moreover, there is FM to test your ability to do business.

However, with increasing number of less matured people in the game, a lot of good intention of the game have gone bad =(  (just like standardized tests in schools).  As a result, PQs really depend on your luck (if you have good teammates or not).  The descrimination from higher level to lower level is not something people should emphasis while it plays an important role in PQs, this is just a game, imagine the descrimination people will develop when they grow older (well it is also the case in a lot of other games ^ ^a).

Marketing has became an opportunity for scanning, seeing people outside of the PQ sites and buying all types of scrolls (I can't say they are all scanners, but most of them are).

Random fame drops (though I've never experienced this personally), drop games, misunderstanding between people, looting items (in PQs and training parties), leeching exp, ks wars, HPQ and LPQ pass thiefs, summoning monsters to kill newbies... all of these are not something Nexon can easily fix.  This reflects some bad moral qualities in people.

I can not say this game has done nothing good for me either, as a matter of fact, it gave me the painful lesson on how to control myself and not play games untill school breaks. If you are lucky, you can meet your soul mate in the game (it's true!), and maybe some friends that you will keep in touch with for a long time after quitting the game.

This is just some personal experiences of the game, feel free to agree and disagree. n_n  I am certainly happy that I quitted the game completely this time around!

The game is pretty darn addictive, especially if you find a good, friendly community, assuming you yourself aren't a complete annoyance or jerk. However, I lost motivation pretty much when my friends started doing other things, and had no real drive to grab the last 10 levels to 4th job. The game pretty much always reaches a point where the player is mostly just stressing about things in the game, yet doesn't realize it isn't really fun anymore, or can't stop playing out of habit. I've been thinking about playing again, but I've abstained for a year now and part of me wants to avoid falling into the habit of grinding again. People will say that this game has the worst grind, but since the entire game essentially is grinding for the sheer goal of being able to spend 6 hours without a potty break pressing the same button to kill a monster that will wipe your entire group out  if your cleric blinks,  that's pretty much a moot point. It can be fun, especially while everything is new to you. The game up to about level 80 can be a lot of fun. I personally didn't find that the appeal of reaching higher and higher levels and achieving 4th job outweighed the sheer level of productivity I could maintain if I just quit the game. Not that I won't play again, I'm 100% sure I will, this game just requires frequent, long breaks for players to stay healthy, generally.
