Yes, the title says it right, I want to find a thinking man's game, per say Everquest I type. Where difficulty was what made it so wonderful. Does anyone have any ideas? Please let me know, if so.

In my opinion, an MMO's difficulty should come from competition from other players. But when I say competition, I don't mean PvP combat... The true challenge should be social, political and economic challenges. It's just a shame that no devs seem interested in developing a sandbox MMO built for user-created content.

Try the EVE trial. It's slow, but smooth and definitely challenging. Death penalty is as harsh as it gets, just short of permadeath. It's pretty quiet though, so make sure you find some people to play with ASAP or you will likely get bored.
I'll try the EVE trial for sure. I've heard the community isn't too friendly, but I'm very interested in at least seeing what it has to offer. Thank you for your suggestion!
FFXI is also very brutal, and a thinky game! Ur not gonna get far fast and combat requires tons and tons of preparation and know-how to proceed at a fast rate!

Well, unfortunately the EVE download page is displaying one hell of an error for me, so I suppose that is out of the question, any more ideas? I really love LOTRO, I just, meh..dunno, once I hit 22 I felt like I'd done it all. I never shoulda left the Shire, heh.
Like a Catholic school girl?
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I stared at the "Like A Catholic Schoolgirl" reply for about five seconds before realizing that wasn't a MMO. I'm too tired for this, lol.
EVE is definitely a good choice. i cant really think of any other MMOs that require much thought other than the best combos.
you could try travian its kind of a mmo rts and its free
I personally dislike EVE. It rewards players too much for how long they've been playing. To stand any chance of making your mark on the game you will of had to have played (how do you like that future perfect tense?) for at least 4 or 5 months (10 million skillpoints) and then you have to join a corporation who knows what theyre doing... and in the end the entire game boils down to mining, running cash missions, and camping for PvP.
Id be just fine with that last statement, if I didn't have to wait 6 months (literally WAIT.. theres nothing you can do to speed up the training process) to be competitive. In traditional MMOs if you wanted to be better you could always just go out and murder a few more mobs or maybe ten thousand more and you'd be where you wanted to be; but not in EVE.
Go out and murder as many mobs as youd like... you'll only end up with more cash and the pirate behind you is still better than you lol.
The ultimate solution to every problem: more space marines.
Because I guarantee, had you been a founder of EVE, you would still be playing (because you would kick some serious business)

I just remeber the good ol' days of strategizing, and then again... I played Rainbow Six: ROgue SPear brackets for about two years, strategy was a necessity there...
Strategy? The last time I used strategy in an MMO was SWG. And it really wasn't strategy... we used a couple snipers to scare rebels into a cantina, then had about 12 commandos flame the entire inside of the building... roasting EVERYBODY.
Thats just how the empire rolled.
But for real strategy... its more like teamwork nowadays. Something like strategy comes out in DAoC when fighting over keeps...
But as for "Move here so I have the best LoS and the higher ground" or "We'll set up here so we can funnel them through there" or "We'll harass while you flank" doesn't happen very much in MMOs.

AYe this I know, tis why I resorted to this board for some guidance mayhaps. It seems everyone else is as lost as I. SWG was the greatest, though. Damn I miss those days .
Mabinogi.
That should be Nuff said right about there, yup.
But just in case it isn't..
You can die very easily if you mess up. You have to constantly think in combat, and react to the enemy according to what they do. Your level is not nearly as important as the skill of the player. Number one rule in Mabinogi is 'Do not get hit'
And yet, so few founders really still play, many of their characters have been sold to others, average play time in EVE is like 7 months, and few see the 1 year mark.
I'm too tired to explain it but you're wrong, a new player can have quite an impact after 3 months or so, and within 6 months start to do some serious damage...but there is that six month curve.
But i had fun during that time learning the game, (still am after 9 months) and its been a good time.

So if they are unfriendly that would be difficult which is what you are looking for!
EVE to me is like trying to beat your family in a who's older contest.
Your father always wins.
The baby always loses.
PS
Yes I understand what your saying in a new player can make a difference in 3 months.
So I have to wait 3 months before I can really start competing in the game?
EVE is the type of game you can never be a master at. (Not with a job anyway)

Fair enough... i still play ffxi (thinking about quitting) the auto attack stuff is kinda zzzzzz.

Well this obviously wrong analogy is why you have a problem. The point of Eve is to beat your father in a "who is richer" contest.
Your analogy is impossible, but also completely wrong. The correct analogy that I made is obviously quite possible.
No one will like a game they feel is pointless. However what you think you are competing against is a figment.
I guess Eve. I don't really consider EQ1 much of a thinking man's game, so its hard for me to say.
I mean personally I consider Guild Wars much more of a thinking man's game than any of the EQ-style games. But I really doubt that is what you want. I find EQ1 and its successors quite simplistic really. EQ1 had a lot of stuff but past that its not that deep IMO.
I assume that what you are really looking for is a game with breadth. Especialy considering the level 22 comment about LOTRO ( which I also ran into my my LM ). And really have depth of gameplay as an optional.
EvE is kind of funny its both broad and deep. And in a way much more so than EQ1 if you go into 0.0 since the political landscape is constantly in flux. At the same time it takes active effort to really access all the breadth of the game and some things may just not be that fun. For example mining. There is a quite a bit to mining, but you may never want to do it. Also the mission running is fairly generic. The meat of Eve is much different than what an EQ or its clones style player would expect. Spawn camping and "questing" exist in one form or another and are profitable but by no means is the game designed around that.
Other than that, the only games with much breadth are either older games like EQ1 or Anarchy online. Or EQ2 or WoW. Maybe LOTRO when the Moria expansion comes out hard to say at this point.
CoX is a good game but I doubt it will satisfy you because of the way content is randomly generated. Generally people who have your tastes tends to feel like they are doing the same thing as the pattern is readily apparent even if each time its a bit different.
DDO has a good amount of content now, but not EQ2 level content. And again I suspect it is not for someone with your tastes because of the content model. Even though a large zone like say Antonica in EQ2 does not have more content really than a fraction of DDO, to many people it seems that way because of the instanced nature of DDO. Especially people want the illusion of openess that a place like Antonica (EQ2) provides. I say illusion because really vast amounts of Antonica are just empty space, with standard predictable spawns and most of Ant is just quest driven content anyway and you wind up doing the same old generic stuff anyway. So I suspect that game will not satisfy you.
I wouldn't do Vanguard if I were you, but it may be your cup of tea. Caveat Emptor.
I have played LOTRO, to me it is still the most appealing MMO on the market as of now. EQ wasn't truly a thinking man's game, I called it that due to having to contemplate on how to survive a mob, Crushbone for example. Those orcs were vicious.
I have played EQII, I played it for about three months, Antonica turned me off due to the wasted space. It is a beautiful world though.
I never tried Vanguard, considered it countless times, just can't get myself to do it. I played Beta, that was enough for me.
WoW... I spent years on that game. Wish I hadn't, All I ever did was complain about how I wanted to quit, LOL.
LOTRO is my strongest candidate, I just wanted to check around see what others could say. Also, I am downloading beta for that Mabinogi game, looks interesting.
having just played Mabinogi, id say you should give that one a go
