All (well vast majority) of the Linux OS's are free.

There is even like 15 different types of Ubuntu based Linux OS's depending on what you are trying to do. Such as classroom versions (Edubuntu), Media Center version etc (LinuxMCE). Gobuntu is made to take advantage of only open source software. many others.

still needs various software to be able to play most types of games... some it can't play at all.

If your not very technically minded, and dont have a lot of patience then stick to Windows.

Linux, in all flavours, is a great OS, but it takes a lot of technical know-how to get the most out of it, and to run games is no simple task. Things are getting better slowly, but i emphasise slowly, the most user friendly option for gaming being Cedega ( http://www.cedega.com/ ) but as you will see there always a step behind, the latest games often not working for some time. WINE is the other option for running games, but this becomes quite technical with command lines being required for most operations.

In short, for the average gamer its not an OS to run as there main desktop, although it can make a nice secondary OS.

I dual booted with Ubuntu for about a month or two. Really, no games (being the games I play) are compatible with it, even with WINE. In my opinion, if you're a gamer, stick to Windows. Ubuntu is a pain in the ass if you aren't a computer nerd, or are just used to how Windows spoils you. Although it does have some good features (like having a free word program built in, along with Firefox) I removed it from my computer, which took like 30 minutes...

And to answer your question, it would probably not take the drivers that you need.
