I would totally agree, but to demand that they know every acronym related to anything in the entire gaming culture is just ludicrous. If you went to the music shop to buy a CD, would you expect the clerk to know every artist in every genre? The people working in the store are people too, and have their own tastes. The people working in GameStop and Best Buy are usually just console gamers and may not have even owned a computer in their lives.

No not at all, but come on, LOTRO is a no-brainer! Everyone in the world should at least know LOTR + an O ....LOL.... Those books are what define the fantasy genre of video games.

Again, I agree, but you have to realize that they may not have even realized you were using an acronym. When you talk about the books, you don't go around calling them "the LOTR series" do you? If you did, people might actually think there is a book series called "Lotr" without realizing you were using an acronym to refer to Lord of the Rings.

It's just one of the many downfalls of the English language. There are so many differences between what is said and what is written, it breaks us as a culture sometimes.

Ya got me there, guess I speak too much acronyms..hehe  They should offer a course in acronyms or something and make it a requirement for any degree what with the internet and all.  Yeah the english culture needs to be rewritten, or deleted.

Customer service everywhere is turning into crap, it's not just Gamestop. Hell, I got into an argument with the parts counter guy at my local Autozone while trying to find parts on a 70 1/2 Camaro I needed parts for. He stood there for 5 minutes debating with me ( didn't bother to look at his little computer screen once ), telling me that my car did not come with an L6 250 straight six from the factory, and furthermore that it was a truck engine.

Shoulda seen the redness of anger in his face when I told him quote "I want to talk to a manager, and not the resident crash test dummy.".

Shoulda seen my smile when the manager pointed out to him, in front of me, that I was correct. The manager then also told him to go home.

Moral of the story: idiots ( and crash test dummies ) are everywhere.

Well, I guess I just  happen to have a really good Gamestop near me.  Unfortunate to hear everyone's stories but my local store is great.  Most of the guys at my store are PC and/or MMO gamers( as well as console) and are very knowledgeable.  The manager at mine plays LOTRO as well.  In fact, I convinced him to try MP after he had been playing for about 6 months and hadn't tried it yet.

    You: No!!!!!!!

GS: Want to put a $10 deposit on Metal Gear Solid its coming out soon and we are going to sell out.  Reserve your copy now.

You:  Lol, Lol, lol Just gimmie money for dis card, I hatez you guyz you dont even know LOTRO its only the best MMORPG of all time based upon the greatest movie ever made.  LOTRO I play a mighty elven archer named Legolas52123 and I rulez.   Now gimmie my $20 I'mma go and buy an action figure of Legolas to put on my monitor while I play my LOTR.

Manager of a retail outlet really doesnt imply much knowledge these days. You wont get any semblence of intelligence untill you get into the larger stores in more populated locations.
I know the manager and emplyees at my local EB know ludicrous amounts about most games in that store.

Sadly gamestop managers dont make a whole lot, and most of the good ones at least in the dallas area got run off. Things may have changed in the past few years... but I doubt it.

O yeah i used the same gamestop in Frisco for 5 years and  the same guy worked there for 3 and if we had any question he had a answer. But he left and they were just ok. As for amarillo omg they know close to nothing other then release dates.

yeah I worked there 7 years, my manager worked there for 6, the other 4 managers in the lewisville/plano area had been there for that long or longer.

They bought funco land, went public, and opened 4 new stores IN the same area. So you have a store in the mall, and one outside the mall, and one accross the highway from the mall. Thats 3 in a mile. One in downtown half a mile up the road, and 2 in flower mount a mile south.

With that many stores your facing MAJOR internal competition. Sales died at certain stores, and those managers were terminated. Folks that had been long standing good managers. Why? Cause GS screwed themselves with the store flooding.

They then replaced those folks with employees from with in and most of them were terminated shortly there after.

With in a year every store in my area had gone through 1 - 2 manager changes. It was no longer about getting the customer what they want and keeping them happy. It was shoving the gameinformer subscription down their throat and getting as many reservations from them as you can. Customers get pissed, stop coming in...etc etc.

We have 4 game stops in my city, and the staff all seem to know their stuff pretty well. Most seem to be mostly pc gamers, but all the stores have downsized the pc shelves to only the newest stuff on one of those 2 sided, 3 feet long, 4 row racks. If I go to the best buy here, they have 2 40 foot rows, 6 shelvves tall with stuff, and another seperate row for new things. Its significantly better, but anyone I have met working that area doesnt even seem to play pc games :p. I prefer pre ordering with Gamestop, but If its an older game by say 2 months, I'm better off going to bestbuy and checking there first. But I just can't get into a half hour discussion there about the proper pinky extended etiquite while playing EQ2, or what ever long winded never really needs to be discussed topic I can get into with guys at bestbuy :p

Edit: The stores here have the same position problem as poster above. All within about a 10 minute drive from one another. They started with 2, one in the Mall of Louisiana, and one in a shopping center. Then two other stores went out of business because of them, so they bought those out, and made them also into gamestops. Not sure who makes those choices, but I hope they dont go the way of the CompUsa's we had here. They also thought it a good idea to put themselves too close to competition with 4 local computer stores, and bestbuy.

Walking into a store that sells mostly console games what do you expect.  Most of those kids they call employees have never played a game on a computer in their life.

  • ArndurArndur Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,202

omg i just went to their website to check a few things and they are offering free over night shiping if you pre order a game that they are showing a release date of feb of next year thats just wrong.

I haven't stepped foot in one of these "specialty" stores in ages.  They are just so ignorant now.  All they push is their overpriced used console games.

Then again, one really shouldn't expect too much from prepubescent minimum wagers.  It's always so sad to see a 30-something working there.

There are 4 employees there atm including the store manager, walked to the desk and asked if they had any LOTRO gamecards.  The employee/manager or whatever gave me this cross-eyed look and said whats LOTRO?  {thinking to myself OMFG!}  So you seriously have no idea what LOTRO is I replied!
    He then turned to the other employees and asked what LOTRO was....the other 3 also had no clue! {I'm just astonished at this point!}
So like I told them you know Lord of the Rings Online, only the most famous fantasy story out there turned into an MMO!

Anyway I went into a bit more that the game was live and doing exceptionally well, and that I want this dumb-ass $20 credit turned into cash and that I would never shop at any of your stores again!  With quite a bit of resistance and little more heated complaining on my part the manager gave me the cash and I left!

HAHA LOTRO does suck and gamestop knows it. Why that one didnt have it stocked. No reason not to shop at gamestop though. I thought there reactions were spot on Lotro was good til it was released and i was forced to pay. And its not a popular as u think. Lotro just have fanatic LOTR fans and if you dont care about that u leave LOTRO after words.

So by your own comments, LOTRO was good as long as you didn't have to pay. A fact everyone knew from the beginning. Then the game and developers used actual force to make your play for the game?  As for the last sentence in your statement.. replace LOTRO with any game and not only does the statement make sense but it would be a true statement.

And if you put any faith into EB/Gamestop or its employees then you have problems.

I feel your pain. The only reason I use Gamestop is that I live in a rural area in Georgia and its the closest and really the only place to go to buy games especially pre-order games. Regardless of if you asked for "lotro" or whatever, the worst part of this is that they offered their opinion. The manager should be fired simply for hiring incompetent employees and even more so for allowing them to ruin a sell. It is their job to sell you a game. If you walked in there asking for Hello Kitty Online or the worst game ever made, they should sell it to you if you ask for it. Their opinions have no place in the retail market unless you ask for them. Simply put, their opinions cost that store and Gamestop a customer and thats bad for the bottom line.

Had you asked "What do you guys think about LOTRO?" then they could have said something to the effect of what they did. However you were looking for something for a game you like and their commentary isn't needed. BAD BAD customer service.

For the most part the store I use is good. They have a high HIGH turnover rate in employees which speaks volumes but the one thing I will never forget (and the one time I complained to their upper management) was when I went in there to sell back some games. They use to buy/trade PC games (non-mmos) and I traded many games in. Well soon after the EB/Gamestop transition I went into the store to trade some and the guy said "they didn't do that". I was thinking "Okay not a problem" but then the guy added that "you could never do that" and rolled his eyes and spoke as if I was crazy for asking. I told him that I had before when the store was under other management and he said I doubted I had. I asked him if he was calling me a liar and he basically said I was. So I drove home (10 miles) and grabbed all my old receipts and went back and showed them to him - receipts showing that I had traded pc games in (this was 4-5 years ago now I guess). Turned around and left, leaving the receipts on the counter. I didn't go back in for a long time either. It didn't really make much of a difference but it did make me feel better.

All he had to do was tell me that the policy had changed and they didn't do that anymore; I would have be okay with that and I was until he rolled his eyes and argued with me about it. His job is to inform me of the policy changes, not offer commentary on it. The thing is not all stores are like the one you had issues with and some do offer great service. I wouldn't condemn the entire franchise, just the store you had issues with. It really seems it is hit or miss with them lately too.

I guess I'm lucky, the people at my local gamestop aren't that bad. Granted, I haven't been there since the release of Hellgate: London. I went in a week before, and they didn't even have the pre order box. I could pre order it there, but I wouldn't have gotten my dye kit/beta key. So they phoned down the road a few gamestops, and one had the pre order box. I put down my pre order and went to grab my box.

But, the person I was talking to was quite nice, wasn't a smart ass, and got the job done. Plus, while I was waiting for my friend to finish looking around, I played the Heavenly Sword demo, and an employee was with another customer near me, and I just happen to eavesdrop way too much for my own good, and heard the employee asking him what he liked, and suggested heavenly sword, but the customer said (god forbid) that he didn't want to play as a woman, and the employee instantly suggested another game for him.

So, I came in the day Hellgate London came out, and as soon as my friend and I walked in, (yes, this happened) and the person we reserved the game with looked over, picked up the two Hellgate London boxes, waved them in the air a bit, and said, "It's here!"... Yeah, not only did he keep them close to him apparently throughout the day, he apparently remembered out faces. Which may be creepy... Or not, however you wish to perceive it. (btw, release day for Hellgate London sucked =/, on the day it came out, the servers broke at about 8/9pm central. =/ Just fyi =p.)

Now, this was last Halloween, not sure if they've changed since then.
