I'm searching for an MMO with a challenge again. Not the challenge of PvP, or gun-battle, but the kind of game that has facets and takes actual mastery to stay alive. I loved the original EQ. Before the greedy little goblins at SOE began pumping out expansions at a rate comparable to Disney sequels, EQ was a wonderful game. Even with the first few expansions things looked good, but after a certain point, it was barely a shadow of what it once was. I played a Bard in EQ, which I adored beyond all reason, and I've never found the same feeling with any other game. I've seen the same sentiments echoed in other users posts; EQ was just unique for its time, and over time...it changed.
I've played quite a few other MMOs as well, EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, Guild Wars, CoH, CoV, DAoC, Horizons, Anarchy Online, LotRO, Ryzom, AC, DDO, Dungeon Runners, and for a while I always went back to EQ, but at some point I went back and found it wasn't EQ anymore, so I moved on.
Since that time though, nothing has caught me the way EQ did, everything seems too easy to master. Nothing seems to have real depth, just the same classes and skills over and over again. I'm tired of playing games (I'm sorry, like WoW) where by a certain level you've seen as much variety as you're going to ever see for that class. I miss variety...and Dungeons.
I have not yet found a game with as many dungeons at all levels as EQ had. Sure, you find little caves here and there in WoW and you get maybe 1 dungeon per faction for each 10 levels right on up until Raid only stuff, but I've never found anything that held me the way Guk or Unrest did and for so many levels.
So I'm still searching, and if anyone has had the same situation and found a game to fill that void, I'd be happy to try anything out there. Thanks for reading and for any ideas you can provide.

I had made a post titled "New MMORPG like EQ?" The link can be found here:
mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/170595
However, I will save you the time of clicking the link, and just quote what was said. I am in the same boat as you and think EQ was one of the best/fun games created. However, I have yet to find any solid answer to your question, but I hope this helps.

Hey fellow gamers,
First time poster here, long time player. It's been awhile since I played any games, I am a huge power gamer, and love nothing more then to see my hard work pay off in "uber" gear. I've played all oI basically want to know what unreleased game is going to fit my personality. I read the stickied post about which games are recommended, but doesn't list any new games. I really think it is too late to break into WOW, and would like a fresh start. Any input is appreciated. Game on!

Ummmm my opinion... I am not sure... WoW is still open for new people but with the release of AoC and Warhammer... Not sure there. I played FFXI and WoW the longest, never really got into EQ, I did play EQOA when it came out for several months, but for now... I would say don't get involved into any game for right now too seriously, when the other two games come out, I would suggest one of the two.
I am playing a game called Perfect World at the moment. It's not as in depth as the others I have played but it's alright until the other games come out. Some people say Wurm Online for free games, but it's a bit laggy and no character customization. You can do a lot though, build tunnels, mines, you create the world, literally. Dungeons and Dragons Online, is more dungeon based, with limited other stuff. LoTRO is decent, its a good bang for its buck. I say look at the Gamelist, look at the top scores and try looking into one of those.

Like I said, I am hunting for the same answer you are. Hopefully, someone sees this and can further help us.
I have the exact sentiments as you mindy. Ah Guk, darn i forgot about that place!
The closest match to EQ1 that I have found has been VG. Definately not the same, dont get me wrong, but the closest. I would watch for AoC to possibly be something new and fresh but as releases go these days dont get your hopes up too much.
