good observation. I remember my first encounter, as well. I have never been in awe of a zone as I was with Rivendell. I agree, Moria, will be incredible.
I recall during the pre-launch period/ openbeta where we were able to level to 15th. For a few days all I had to do was wander and gain traits. I decided to run to Rivendell with a few folks. We were not high enough level of course and it was a long trip but well worth it. I had the same sense coming into the valley. it was the only moment in recent MMOs that reminded me of the sense of discovery I had back in the early days of EQ.

I did the same back then, except it was my level 15 squishy LM all alone. I got lost several times navigating the switchback trail just after the Ford. I think the constant fear, dodging and running from all the purple bears and flys, made the final approach that much sweeter.
The look and the feel of the place is just...perfect.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one that wasn't impressed that much with Rivendell but I think it was mainly due to all my friends overhyping it so much. It works the same as with a movie. You see the commercial for the first time, all your friends tell you it's the BEST MOVIE EVER. You go in there with the expectation of a Star Wars mixed with Indiana Jones and the Lord of the Rings trilogy and you get a movie that's probably decent to anyone else, but becase you are expecting the world, it falls a bit short.
P.S. Then again, I'm sure having low graphics settings on had something to do with it as well.

I hit a slow ddown in North Downs, and that is the highest leveled area I been too , except as a MP in the moors.. So I decided to go to Rivendell , and I have to say that entering the area I was like, ok another new map to play on, but by the time I got towards the High Moor , my mouth just dropped open at the scenery. It literally gave me goosebumps running through it for the first time. The super high elevation is just maasive and I've never seen any game create such a lust and beautiful picture like this. Coming of the east side of High moor you go through a narrow passage and then it just .. well , you will have to just see for yourself, it is amazing craftman ship in the mapping and terrain formation.. I can't wait to visit the other areas, and I think just from what I saw tonight , Moria is just going to be insane ... Just want to ad that this game gives me that thrill feeling right in the chest, I havent gotten this feeling in along time but right now it just gives me such a great feeling,,
Dear friend, you are in for a treat. RV is nice, but there are more. If your tour High moor, you will run into Trolls, lots of them. They are nice to fight hehe: Do not try to solo them. They hurt unless you are the right class. The epic book (4) in the moors is the beginning of the best of the book for me. You are tracking down a Nazgul and you will fight him in Bk 5.
Breath taking ehh? Try to run north from RV, the snowy mountains there are even better, well aggro have been stepped up, it will be very hard to slip by without aggro, but the change in music and the sudden feel of imminent death will tell you what to expect, literally. The Misty Mountain is a treat.
The best scene for me is up the top of Angmar, running thru the webbed territories of the spider liars to the top of Angmar, where you are literally surrounded everywhere by all sorts of elite mobs. Its both exciting and stunning. Actually I met my first stupid death in East Angmar, I was so thrill at the scene, I zoomed out to watch, I rotated my camera and I forgot I am looking backwards, I move on and fell off the cliff, still in panaroma view.
Oh btw do not hit East Angmar until you got sent there by the epic questline. This is a hint. No more spoiler.

You really feel the quality at ultra high setting.
But to maintain smooth framerate inside towns, notably RV where a lot of people go from crafting (after harvesting in Misty mountains) to questing, or meeting up prior to raids (people teleport to RV for helegrod), you need a very good display card. I tried it with 1950, its not yet good enough. My friend used a 8800, its superb.
Ultra High settings with texture quality/cache turned up and AA on 4x really make the game shine. It's a key part to seeing the full beauty of the game.

100% agree, this game is increasingly beautiful and Rivendell is definitely one of those must see areas.

I concur, I too ran out to Rivendel while waiting for the level 15 cap to come off and it was one of the highlights of my short time in LotRO.

Indeed Rivendell is awsome. But i think what impressed the most was goblin town.
It makes me feel just like in the hobbit.
As much as i hate the place i love the feeling i get being there.
Moria , will be insane.
Where is Goblin town? Sounds like part of Philly where I live.

Yes, you're the only one.
The biggest fun is to run to Rivendell as chicken
