There pretty much aren't any good free MMOs. Hell, there aren't even many good pay-to-play games IMO, at least not any that don't get old after like two months.

You might want to try Guild Wars. You'll have to buy at least one of the chapters but the first one should be dirt cheap, and after that it's free to play.

The basic Anarchy Online game is free, and put out by the same company that is putting out AoC.  Plenty of grouping opportunites (as is the case with most MMO's).  It's deep and a bit complex, though, so by the time AoC is out you may just be getting the hang of AO.

Note however, that while you can indeed enjoy a good portion of AO as a fr00b (free-to-play player), you will have to put up with loud video commercial billboards caterwauling at you almost everywhere you go.

I honestly don't know how people can put up with that. I have a fully paid AO account currently (though it lapses from time to time), but also a fr00b account for muleage and such.

The latest commercial is Will Farrel yodeling at you about Old Spice deodorant and your sweat glands "dropping a deuce".

I'm messing around in Mabinogi right now and it fits the criteria.  It's even different from most grinders because it covers both skill bases, character advancement is essentially make your own class type thing, and past level 15 or so the game is set up so you need to actually use your characters abilities or you die.

And you see some interesting things like just random gatherings in town squares just to talk.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Check out Dungeon Runners.  it's extremely group friendly and there are quite a few couples and families that play together.  You'll appreciate the instant combat, no travel times, no death penalties (except for 3 minute debuff in one dungeon) and instant teleport to any other group member!  That's right - in the middle of a boss fight and die? Instantly teleport right back into the action by right-clicking a group member's name and selecting "go to".  Easy as pie...

Word of advice, though - avoid World 1 unless you have a thick skin. It's the DR equivalent of Barrens chat...  Personally, I play on W7 - we're like a bunch of communist hippies in that most players on that particular world eschew all trading.  If I find a Mythic (the most rare) item and can't use it, I (and almost everybody else on that world) will immediately offer it up to anybody else who can use it, for free.   There are definitely generous players on all worlds, but it seems to be the rule, rather than the exception, on W7.
