Lotro Dye Sucks.

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062

If you call me a troll for this, I swear you need to be stabbed in the eyes... now that that's out of the way, I play Lotro and like the game a lot but the Dye system really irritates the crap out of me because it's damn unpredictable and you have basically no control over what part of your clothing actually gets dyed.

I saw this guy run by in a beautiful set of armour, it was almost pure black.  I got the exact same chest piece for an outfit option because I totally loved it, along with the black dyes... the chest plate turned out purple...

As far as I can tell, there is no 'blending of dyes/colours' in Lotro, I could be wrong however.

Either way, is it so difficult for an MMORPG with a dye system to do something like maybe the Neverwinter Aurora Toolset, so when you're choosing colours you choose which LAYER of the clothing you're trying to colour?  I know it's a small thing but when  you waste money on dye that doesn't work out, it just disappoints.  I know I'm not the only one who's been annoyed with the dye system... but basically unless you want to be GREEN/BROWN/RED, chances seem good you're going to end up looking kind of off...

All the models & their textures would have to be retagged.   Then the engine code would have to be further bogged with more code in order for you to customize the layers specificially, save it, & render it, thats three rather large changes.  Sounds simple but you have to make alot more code unstable in order to gain access to those layers.

The network packets would have to be changed to send / receive in the new information for the layers for every player thats within your rendering view.

Its totally doable for sure but I"m guessing it came down to time, money, and performance hits that they've only allowed you specific layers per armor.  Just sounds as if the layers they did choose suck to dye, maybe they should atleast give you a preview before you hit ok, that'd probably be easier to implement since it would only be on your side instead of everyone.

Well the good thing is that with the outfit system you can just find a better looking pair of pants and replace the graphics with the new stuff.

The dye system isn't perfect, but it helps.

A lot of outfits make you look like clowns in Lotro sadly lol but the game has gotten a LOT better with customization... I posted out of frustration is all, really it's a very minor thing that can just be really annoying at times.  I remember back in beta, starter armour was all bright red and green.. you looked like a friggin christmas elf running around lol.

I have a lifetime sub to the game and as I said, they keep improving it and while the kind of detail to customization I'd love will probably never be present, I'm very glad they do care about customization enough to add stuff like outfits and barbers.

Well I changed his outfit now, so he looks better...

I agree... it's horrible. I had a similar issue. I did the same... dyed black. Parts that I thougth would be bland werent black, parts that needed to be dyed stayed the same color.

Guild wars has a decent dying system. you know what is going to change color. No reason LOTRO can't have this as well.

Oh, before I dyed black I wanted deep rich blue. What I got was a faded blue that looked almost purple.

Ya the dye is bad. my dwarf style boots had yellow tops that you couldnt change. No matter what different dyes i tried, they never would match with those yellow tops. After a while thats all i would see..no matter how hard i tried to ignore it. My eyes would be drawn back to them..i couldnt stop looking at them. Id be fighting a raid boss..but i couldnt take my eyes off the yellow tops of my boots. I even dyed everything gold(yellow)..still i was like a moth drawn to the light. Why?!?!?! I must have spent 2 days trying to find an outfit after they let you where whatever that matches well. Theres still always at least one little thing that sticks out..Ive found that as long as its not Yellow..especially not yellow at the top of my boots..Im ok.

I agree fully with DeaconX. I too was so often mad at the results of the dyes in LOTRO, especially since they are not cheap.

You do know that people come to forums besides just looking for help right?  Or were you just trying to be that much of an @$$?  Does Darkfall even have an official forum?  If so why do you come here to ask questions or voice concerns, what gives you the idea the people here can help ya here?  If not, that's odd...something else they can't deliver.

His character he can play looks a lot less like a clown than you appear to be for holding out hope on a vaporware game.  Smiley faced don't cover up this pos post.

As for the dyes in LOTRO...quite disappointing actually.  I liked the simple dye process in Guild Wars more.  However this is not a game breaker for me as I play zoomed out anyways.  I wish mutliple dying would make it darker.

Best dye system i have ever seen is in the Pirates of burning sea MMO, castomatisation theere  is just  stuning, it always works , and colours are rich and beautiful.

LoTRO very badly needs a dye preview system.  I stick to brown and green dyes for the most part.  They are quite cheap and usually end up looking pretty good.   I can understand being ticked if you blew the 2+ gold for black dye and then didn't like the results.

One thing I do like about the dye system in LoTRO is that the dye isn't applied as an even color layer over the top of a piece as it is in DAoC or EQ.  With a system like that you end up losing a lot of texture details when you dye something.  I just wish it was easier to predict what parts were going to take the dye in LoTRO.   The system is predictable with leather or most cloth, but I never know what I'm going to get with heavy or with a cloak I've never dyed before.

I have had to scrounge a bit, but I have outfits I really like on all of my toons these days.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Bad would be having no dyes.

The dye system can be improved on, and no doubt it will be.  I agree with the sentiment of the OP, but change occurs when people present their ideas in a positive manner - or picket and boycott, but I don't think that's appropriate here, so 'positive manner' it is.

The Post was written to convince, but personally I don't need convincing, maybe a concise thread suggesting improvements and possibly a poll would work for this site, and find a similar thread to add to on the main forums or start one if there isn't one available.

A window showing the outcome before the dye application is confirmed would solve that.  The other problem, of not having a choice in where it goes would require a different fix of course.

Eh, dye system can use improvements but the OP picture shows heavy armour top and medium armour pants. Leather parts were always dyed differently then metal parts. While not perfect I would suggest combining only heavy with heavy, mediu with medium and light with light.

Part of the randomness of the dye system is by design.  When an armor piece drops it is given a random base color.  Depending on what that random base color is... will dictate what color you end up after you apply the dye.

When you examine a piece of armor it says what it's base color is.  So, if you are trying to make a matching set of armor you need to make sure that all of your base colors are the same.

If you've done that and still get various results then you should send in a bug report.  Here is the link to an ongoing discussion with floon (the Dev. responsible for the Dye system in LoTRo):

One of the features of dying armor that NCSoft added to Guild Wars was the ability to preview what would be dyed before committing to it.

This way you could mix dye's for different hue's and match it up before accepting the changes.  In this case this feature could have saved you the frustration of getting the item and the dye and feeling like you've wasted a lot of time and energy.

I thought that there was some sort of dye removal agent that you can buy in-game, maybe you needed to do something like that before adding the black dye to get the desired affect you were looking to get?!

I always use crafted items to dye. Seems to end up with much more reliable results.

The dye system is better now then it used to be. They changed the dye maps of a lot of the armour to make it better looking. Also, you have two completely different pieces of armour, so of course its going to look like crap. Well, anyways I like how my armour turned out .

MUCH more to my liking now.  Neither of these are my actual armour, they are my outfits.  The first one for warm/forested and casual areas.  The second for battle.  Meet Ayden Fett of Rohan, Mercenary Hero.
