Suggestions? Looking for a Game with Rich Roleplay

ArielBiancaArielBianca Member Posts: 5

Hello -

So, once upon a time, I was a very avid player of an excellent text-based MUD (The Eternal City, to be exact).  The roleplay was extremely rich - fantastic player created storylines, extensive backgrounds, player run schools, etc. - yet a top-notch combat system, huge explorable gameworld, active GMs, customizable items, etc.  Absolutely awesome.

For a number of reasons, I stopped playing a few years ago (after a number of years of playing).   Recently, though, I've been having the nagging desire to get back into gaming, but I'd really like to "upgrade" into the 21st Century and consider a graphical MMORPG.  I had been extremely resistant (as many of us text-based believers often are - or formerly, in my case).  I figured that the gameworld would be more restrictive as far as imagination, choices, and true immersion go.   After a few years away from any sort of gaming, I think I'm willing to give it a go.  (Plus, I have no interest in going back to my old MUD and the learning curve for a whole new text-based game - that will probably die soon, anyway - is not something I care to deal with.)

So... to make a long story short (too late, right?), I'm looking for a game that :a) has a good amount of players b) roleplay is the norm (I don't like my roleplay to be broken by RL conversations or abbreviations) or has a roleplay only or friendly server and c) is just a good all-around game, mechanically (I am not interested in a purely social game, as I like to have my characters spend alot of time alone hunting, crafting, occasionally fighting, etc.)

I love the idea of Lord of the Rings Online (I'm a huge Tolkien fan), but I don't know if those would meet my requirements.  That would be ideal, though.

Help would be truly appreciated!

The game you're looking for doesn't really exist. A lot of people, including myself would like to play such a game but there really isn't one... a suggestion though, would be to get lord of the rings, play on landroval(unofficial RP server) and turn off all global/area chat channels except for when you need them, otherwise you'll be in for a large disappointment. There's no graphical MMO with strictly enforced roleplay, at least that I know of.

Planeshift is hoping to become that mmorpg. Last I checked, it had a decent sized of players, but it is FAR from being complete. I mean REALLY far. Last I checked, most combat had yet to be included.

But it's kind of a rule to be IC at all times except for emergencies. It's good for rp, not good for anything else.

Like someone already state the game you are looking for does not exist. Those 3 end letters after MMO are for the most part meaningless in most games. What you should be seeking is a role-player community, never mind the game, it is the community that makes the RP and it is very rare to find a community that RP’s to the level you seek.

I would suggest MxO for its RP community but the game is not worth the time and effort. Instead take a look at AoC for its RP community. They have managed to create a good RP set-up and have created an accord that expands of 12 primary RP guilds dedicated to RP together in one of the servers. You can visit the AoC-Rp.com site and have a look for your self. RP will be very interesting in AoC without a doubt. And I think starting a game fresh with its RP community has its advantages from a questing and leveling point of view. AoC isn’t out yet but it is scheduled for released in May.

    Good luck on your search…

You might want to give Ultima Online a try. Its dated graphically but coming from text muds that should not be a problem. Its a nice sandbox type of game do what you want (craft, cast spells, fight, any or all of the above). I am not sure about the RP element lately, as I am just returning to the game, but I know some of the best RP experiences I have ever had with mmo's were in UO.

    BUT

many players will not roleplay, so you'll have to leave many channels that are in the game since most channels will be off topic chat. MMOs aren't that great in RP like MUDs are.I never gave it a good try, but dungeons and dragons online (the MMO) might be a good choice, out of all the MMOs I imagine this one would have the best RP in it...but I wouldn't really know.

You know I played DDO and I have to honestly say there is more raiding than RP in this game. In the six months that I played I never RP and I'm an active role-player. The game is fun though and one those meet allot of mature players. But for me instancing is so limiting and repetitive, it gets boring after a while. Also there is no crafting in DDO and OP is asking for a game that includes crafting.

Vanguard MIGHT be a good choice for you. Not too sure if you have the computer to run it though. I also have not played that game for 4 months or so. It was awesome back then, just didn't have the funds, and now that I do - I'm going back :)

Thank you for all of the responses.  Sounds like I'm going to have to compromise a little - but that's okay.

Could anyone familiar with LOTRO comment on the quality and types of RP one might find on the unofficial RP server, Landroval?  Is it fairly easy to find multiple people to rp with at any one time?

    Thanks!

(Also, I checked out the Age of Conan website and it looks like the emphasis will be on everyone fighting, unless I missed something.  I just gave the forums and FAQ's a cursory glance.)

Most of the RP that I have done post-MUDs has been playing Neverwinter Nights online.  Not a MMO experience but if you are just looking for good RP....
