I recommend you don't get either. Lineage 2 is, in all honesty, a pretty terrible game in all respects other than some of the graphics and nice music in places. FFXI is going to be a very difficult game to start playing right now unless you know people in it already. The grind in both games is horrendous, particularly lineage II.
If you absolutely have to have one, go with FFXI. The story is good, graphics are good, the content is very nice. However just keep in mind, probably more than 50% of the people in game speak primarily Japanese and very little english. Many of them prefer not to group with people who speak no Japanese. The grind is bad. There is no pvp. And you MUST group at all times in order to do anything past lvl 5 (with a few special exceptions like beastmaster). You have to put a ton of work into this game to get to the really cool content though. The game also doesn't have a huge variety of mob types until much much later levels. You will fight the same things for 95% of your lvls.
Lineage 2 has terrible content, terrible pvp rules (and I like pvp), tons of exploiters/farmers/griefers. The game is all about grinding for cash and xp. Gets extremely boring pretty quickly. The higher you get the more boring the game becomes. Stay away from this game unless you like to watch paint dry.
Just go play City of Heroes for 2 months till WoW comes out or try Daoc or AO

There are 2 free trial mmorpgs that dont require a credit card....EVE online and Asherons Call. Give them a look see....you have nothing to loose

L2 is super repitive. Just think Diablo 2 except it cost $50 and $15 a month. Other than that, everything abuot the game is shallow. Its extremely shallow. Plus u must bow down b4 the koreans and accept their decisions, b/c US and Euro gamers have no say in what goes on.
FFXI. I gave up after 1 month. To me FFXI had the best graphics. I was able to run it on high no problem. PLus the forests were nice and thick. BUt just like L2 its mostly about leveling. Luckily u got more to do and the enviroment and town setup are better. But the interface is like WTF?
I should of tried DAOC.
So far Eastern MMORPGs arent pleasing at all.

It's best game available in the current market right now.
It's very addictive. So be warned. It will feature continuous expansions that will comes with many new stuffs to do. It is said L2 comes in 12 chronicles.
1. Castle Siege. Strider, Dragon raid.
2. New PvP competition Feature. Something like you have to try to kill opponents Boss NPC at the same time trying to guard yours, etc. I think it's being tested in Korean Test server for future chronicle.
3. Mini Games. (Treasure chest hunting, Racing, etc planned for Chronicle 2)
4. Huge area to explore. Sea, Mountain area etc.
5. I heard Housing is also planned for future chronicles.
I'm level 44 AW clan master and I don't think I will ever get tired of this game. If you were to listen someone, you might as well listen from someone who actually played for quite while and than from someone who quit after couple days of play.
Read some lineage II reviews... most are disapointed with it.
FFXI is a well made game in alot of ways, but being a eastern game it has some really bad ways of doing things. The level treadmill isn't too bad at first, but slowly gets slower and slower like most other games. But in FFXI you need a subjob or else you are considered gimp. So you have to repeat the tread mill as another job and do everything over again.
Most people level a few jobs... so you will be hunting in the same areas over and over and over. Gaining levels from soloing is impossable for most classes. The main solo class isn't wanted in parties unless they are doing Burning Circle Notorius Monster fights, usually. I could solo with my Great Axe Warrior with Whitemage sub'd at every level... But to gain a level from it would take a few days. If I missed too many times I would be killed though and would lose a couple days worth of exp. to something that shows to be "easy prey" for its toughness heh.
Tons of quests... the cutscenes were pretty cool. The graphic engine never gave me any sort of CPU/Video lag like Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Starwars Galaxies, and other games did in crowded areas after playing for a few hours straight without a reboot.... there was however always a bit of latency since the servers are on the other side of the world. That allows the Japanese players to get the Creature you were camping that only spawns once X amount of hours and drops a badass rare item that you and 20 other people were waiting on to spawn.
Main thing I didnt like was trying to get a group... even as a WHM it can take some time, though not as bad as most classes and more then half the time you get invites even without setting the 'looking for group' flag, but the days where it takes 3 hours to get a group sucked hardcore.
Sure you can get into lots of groups fast, but most of the time you are missing a much needed class... like a tank or a damage dealer. So even though you have 5 people you cant do crap until you get that 6th person that you really need.
By the time you get that 6th person, make it to the spot where you are hunting, some other much needed class in your party has to log off. Now you are back to finding a replacement so you can get started... and half the time someone else leaves by the time you find that 2nd replacement.
Also sucks to walk around looking like everyone else. As my whitemage I looked like every other single whitemage the whole time from lvl 10 or so till I got my racial armor. Every time I bought the next armor available, it was the same ugly brown and orange crap. Then when I got my artifact armor I looked like every other whitemage again. (except lamer since I was a male hume and the leg armor has to be the ugliest thing I've ever seen on a male Hume)
To be honest, I have played all the Final Fantasy games prior to FF 7, except 2, and have played 7. Havent played anything after 7. But this game doesnt feel like Final Fantasy to me at all, compared to the older Final Fantasy games. I'd much rather play a mmorpg with crappy graphics like FF7 or even FF6 with the Super NES graphics then FF XI
out of the 500k players on FFXI, about 200k are Westerners, and theres many Japanese that can speak english. Most of the americans act like twats though so some that speak english ignore us americans due to the dumbasses... I cant blame them. Never met any annoying japanese players and alot of the high lvl ones with lvl 60-75 characters will drop what they are doing to help people like a lvl 18 newb trying to get a magicked skull or whatever for a quest. (If you know how to ask)
In september I think it is, the expack comes out and it is also released in Europe. So there will be tons of english speaking players and won't be as hard to get a group then. If you start then, there will be plent of people to advance through the levels with.
But... I wouldnt waste my money on either personally with WoW and EQ2 comming, oh and Face of Mankind.(depending on your tastes)

For Lineage 2...just read the reviews, I'm sick of talking about the cons and pros of it. I have played through beta and had a 43rd phantom ranger in release, so I'm not a person who played it for a few days then quit. I just went on to something that was actually fun.
Do some research, take in all the information you need, then make your own choice. Personally, I'd recommend skipping all of them and enjoy the rest of your summer.

after i have played and spent a good few month playing both lineage2 and final fantasy xi, i wouldnt recomend either generally. Ifd i had to reccomend one of this id go for Final Fantasy XI, purely that it isnt an hardcore games game or driven by how rich you are. Also the customer service that Square-Enix is supurb and is one of the best around.
The best factors about lineage2 would have to be the speed of the game, its nice and fast paced combat, but in general its full of farmers, griefers, bugs and is fully equiptment driven and is much of a hardcore leveling game.
