Hi all. Just got my second copy of FFXI for my laptop so me and my brother can play together. Was very happy when I recieved it in the mail today but so far I have only been disappointed. First after installing, I discover that FFXI is supposedly inaccessible on a vista computer. This really bumbed me out, but then I discovered there is a downloadable version of Playonline which makes it compatible with Vista. After half an hour of downloading that, I am pleased to find I can now access Playonline!!! :) Now im hit with an even bigger and frustrating problem. The friggen Playonline registration code I got with the game dont work! Also, Im sure it's not just one faulty code, as I tried two unused buddy keys for the game which dont work either! It just keeps telling me 'Invalid registration code'. I thought maybe the servers and so forth were under maintenance, but 4 hours later and it's still happening.

I have no idea what to do and im starting to think the idea of me and my bro teaming up in FFXI just aint gonna happen :( Thought I'd ask here if anyone else has encountered the same problem. I figure it must have something to do with my laptop. Also I was wondering if maybe I could register my new playonline account on my old pc where I know the game works fine. Could I then access that new account through my laptop and then register the game codes on the laptop? Or is that just extremely stupid and would give me two accounts on the same friggen computer whilst my laptop gets no FFXI at all? Any help would be great.

    Have you tried contacting support?

Also, the game server had a emergency shutdown(until 4pm today), dont know if the billing and codes are connected in anyway, maybe thats why you cant register them. /shrug.

I just started the game and Have to say getting everything to work right is very annoying. After you have it all set up I suggest you check out http://www.windower.net it makes the game so much more playable on the PC. I would not even play the game if it wasnt for that.

Well i hope you get it to work i tried to play again the other day i spent the time updating yada yada yada then it tells me that my account details are wrong or it cannot find my account? Sent 8 emails so far to support to find out why i cant login and have not recieved anything back, this was my all time favourite MMO and now im starting to think they are just as useless in the support feild as a lot of other MMO company's i also read that if you dont log in for a while they cancel your account? if this is what has happened to my account they wont be seeing me again.

It does a lot more than just make it run in windowed mode. ^^

Oh, I've never needed or wanted anything from it other than a windowed mode. I don't care about any of the features it has to offer, nor do I use them. To each their own I guess.

Is it the final version of FF, everytime I should download the game once again, however, the game is my favorite.

Thanks for the responses guys, but I have deciced to give up on the game. Really enjoyed it and like the FF world but it's just too much trouble. Already hit WAY to many problems and havent even started playing the friggen game yet. Guess FFXI and laptops/VISTA just dont mix. Doesn't matter. Ive still got two of the greatest games ever -EQ2 and GW. Also got AoC on pre-order. Think thats enough gaming goodness for me. :)

I have this running on Vista Ultimate x64, Vista Ultimate x32 and a laptop with Windows XP.  The same account on 3 different PC's.  You can register the POL ID on the PC then add your account to the laptop once everything has been registered and you have purchased your Content ID's.  You then can create your character(s) on the laptop.  You can not however use the other registration codes that didn't come with the game like Wings of the Goddess (if you have that expansion) more than once.  You can use the Zilart, Chains, and Treasures codes if that came with the bundle.  Make sure also that you are typing in all caps when typing in the code.

Yeah I definately still love FFXI and cant help but really want to play again. I managed to get the playonline account onto my laptop. The big problem is now it says I cant play FFXI because it is not installed. But it IS installed. The game and all of it's expansion are installed on the laptop. It was driving me nuts so I gave up. If anyone here has had the same experience plz let me know if you found a solution. Btw I have two seperate copis of Vanadiel collection 2007.

I have yet to try making contact with the support team. Thought perhaps I could sort it out myself by checking some of the forums, etc. Seems to happening to quite a few people with Vista. Looks like phone contact with the support team is my last hope.

Sounds like you didn't remove the original playonline viewer before installing the vista one. Also you can disable UAC ,wich alot of vista users hate.I might also add that, you do have to register your content ID,and any server maintainance will result in registration stuff being shut down for 2 or 3 days.

Contacting Support via phone is costly , and often times unproductive , I ve returned a few times. There are some stuff you should know :

Support sends emails to your POL account , Support requires at least 20 questions + credit card information , Average wait for a support person on the phone for an answer 3 and half hours , using online chat from support for tech help is annoying , I believe the Live Chat people are a band of typing monkeys who specialize in copy and paste.

In order for the game to work in Vista , you need XP mode , Admin access and UAC off. UAC will crash the game 99% of the time , even in Windowed mode. Somethings you want off include Norton worm protection (it uses CPU , and FFXI is heavy CPU intense.)

The only problem I had with running FFXI and Vista , is .. Vista is a dumbass and had to be babystep through making the game run. FFXI POL is still geared towards 56k connections , last update from the trial disc took me 11 hours on 1.6 cable line O.o

Wow......I decided to give it another shot and I actually got it to work. Im in shock hehe. The big reason Playonline was telling me the FFXI games were not installed was because I had the wrong Vista version of POL. I kept trying the EU version everytime which is supposed to be the right one for me. Problem was I got my copy of FFXI via ebay and in the item description, it was not displayed that the the copy I bought was the US VERSION!!! Anyway got the US version of POL and game works fine. Pffft. After all that trouble and frustration I went through, and the solution was as simple as that. Oh well not the first time something like that has happened. See some of you FFXI fans in game hopefully. : ) Im thinking im gonna have to drop EQ2 now....

    Excellent choice!

However, make sure to purchase US versions of future expansions to be safe - I think registration codes are not compatible among regions. I may be wrong though!

the only problem i had running FFXIvista on my laptop was that toshiba doesn't have an updated driver for my graphics card - so every few seconds the game hangs (i can count 9 steps while running forward, every 9 it hangs) - but there is a work around......... ready? the game plays fine if i have an xBox360 controller plugged in to my USB port..... strange huh?

that an the fonts look funny in the pol viewer

the downfall to the windowed mode provided does not allow for full resolution. 800x600. windower is still better until SE can upgrade their windower.
