well , tht's kinda hard question

first of all depends it depends WHAT campaign you got

you can be hardcore and play the game , you just won't have acces to most of the skills in pvp so you won't be very " good " at that and pve will be kinda hard.

So i guess it's kinda all or nothing game

yes, you can be hardcore. You can purchase (for addtional money) pvp expansion packs with skills so that you don't have to PvE.

You might want to do the PvE story though in order to learn your character as there are some great pvp'ers and they won't really have the patience while you flounder around not knowing what you are doing. keep in mind though that getting to top lvl is not hard and this is not really a gear based game. Sure, certain things will help you but it is not out of the reach of any player.

So don't expect to strut out there with your sword of uber death and your armor of damage mitigation and wail on your enemies. They will have what you have and if they don't they might be good enough that it doesn't matter.

    Have fun!

Every game can be played hardcore, the way you are benefited for doing it varies though and Guild Wars is, this may be sad for you, not the best option if you want to become much better than everyone else at the game thanks to the time you spend in it; Guild Wars is mainly about your own skills. There are no "über" weapons or armors thus making you equally good to a fairly causal player as me.

Now to answer your "real" question. First off you didn't specify if you wanted to play PvP or PvE mostly. Guild Wars is mainly hardcore when it comes to the PvP aspect; here you will be able to get famous if you're truly hardcore and in a good guild, this is where the hardcore players go simply. PvE on the other hand isn't equally hardcore but it does indeed offer many challenges, such as getting all titles maxed out to get the title "God Walking Amongst Mere Men".

So if PvP is what you're aiming for I will quote myself from a previous post.

After reading through the other comments I think a slight clarification is necessary. First of all as you only have Prophecies and Nigthfall (right?) you don't have access to all of the skills in the game, this may prove to be annoying should you want to participate in GvG/HA/General PvP.

You got access to the most skills in the game and thus you shouldn't have too much problem with playing in general PvP, however GvG is different. GvG is he highest form of PvP and features the biggest challenge, here you can't redesign a build because the player doesn't have access to the skills, a build in GvG must be as good as it can be.

Not having access to Factions may and may not prove to be annoying, should you decide to play a Dervish or Paragon you won't have trouble as these classes only got Nightfall skills and their secondary profession can be played decently without Factions. If you watch through the section of great working builds in GvG at PvXWiki you'll see that quite a lot of builds doesn't need skills from the Factions campaign.

In this case you only have access to one of the campaigns meaning you will encounter problems should you decide to try out GvG or HA as you'll lack access to Nightfall, Factions and EoTN skills. Additionally you are a new player meaning you will have to unlock the most new skills, either by buying the skill packs or PvEing. Basically for you to hardcore PvP you need at least one more campaign and you also need to unlock the skills provided in these two campaigns.

Should you on the other hand decide that PvE is the way to go you'll be much better off here. First of you got lots of stuff to do in only the first campaign, just beating the mission in normal and Hard Mode will take a lot of time and so does vanquishing (killing all mobs in one area in Hard Mode) and seeing 100% of the map. However you won't be able to max out very many titles as the most of them are connected to the other campaigns. If you want to PvE you can postpone buying another campaign by maybe a month or so.

Conclusion: To take full advantage of Guild Wars and truly reap the benefits of your hardcore playing you will further or later be forced to buy another campaign, when that is necessary is up to you though.

PvE, yes u will be able to enjoy the game, even if you dnt have all the xpansions

PvP, nope, in order to get competitive, you need to have all the skills at game, so you would need to have all the xpansions

my advice, if you are willing to try out GW, start for first chapter, prophecies

Old-school gamers tend to recommend Prophecies (being the first game come out), but really I think Nightfall is the richest one of the 3 installments.

imo, Being a hardcore PvEer is not really welcome in this game as PvE content is rather limited (short storyline for each game, and very few elite missions), compared to big-time PvE MMOs. However the quality of the PvE is very high.

Being a hardcore PvPer used to be easier but, now, being new to the game, you probably won't be able to join a guild with a good GvG or HoH rank, and so will end up playing mostly in random or team arena, or 1v1...

The game is very well-polished though. There are no bad surprises. You'll understand what the game has to offer very quickly and can be confident in the continuous quality of it.

Although I have my best memories from the original game (Prophecies), I would definately recommend Nightfall for a new player. Nightfall feels like Prophecies, but then greatly improved.

If you want to play PVE hardcore, get Nightfall and Eye of the North and try to finish those in hard mode. This wont be easy for a new GW player.

For PVP you could do without  Factions and Prophecies, but if you want to be competitive in Guild vs Guild or Heroes Ascent, your teammates will expect you to have all skills available. Even though you can only bring 8 at once. And expect having to practice a lot! No ubergear in this pvp.

Professions in GW are not as static as in gearbased MMO's, so you will have to learn to recognise loads of skills and play in a lot of different ways.

It's simple, hardcore in Guild Wars is Guild versus Guild battles. Until you not from top 100 rated guild, I don't think it is hardcore. And no, I'm not a hardcore player.
