Have I gotten to old for MMORPGs?

I don`t know your age, but you`re surely not old to play mmogs.

Now, about the "kids", I think you should cool down. If the game allows kill-steal, it`s a bitch - you gonna have to deal with it. But if not, just pretend the annoyers are not there and play your game.

I remember when I was started playing City of Heroes, my 1st "big" MMOG. I was a newbie, grouped with strangers, fighting foes in an instance (cave in Hollows, for those who know). I had finally found the spot in the cave we hadn`t searched and I told this other player "come here" - just like that. The person snapped: "don`t gimme orders". A few years ago I`d have sent him to hell, snapped too. But at that moment I laughed to myself and replied: "relax, man!". What I`m trying to say is: don`t let other people get in to you. You cannot let a complete stranger affect your inner self - specially through an internet connection. That goes for chat, names and actions/emotes.

One game I KNOW has a great community is City of Heroes/Villains. Most are mature (mind and age wise), helpful and nice people. The starting points Atlas Plaza and Fort Darwin of the starting areas of Atlas Park and Mercy Island, respectively, might have some annoyers but it`s just that. Good luck and don`t stop playing!

  • The Internet highlights human ignorance and stupidity to levels so high that I don't see much hope for the damn species.  The same issues will occur in a forum or an online game, so the best idea is just to get used to it and ignore the idiots.  It's the only solution that will keep you sane, other then just cutting the cord and refusing to use the Internet.

There has always been ignorant people in online games. Does anyone remember all those naked players running asking for gold or items over and over in UO at the banks? That was in 1997 or 1998 or something like that.

But, I have a different theory. Now, this is just from personal experience now.

People that have been playing these type of games for a extended period of time will simply burn themselves out. You get to the point where you play the same game(s) for so long you get simply sick of it over a period of years. I know the only two games that I played for 5 years or more was EQ and DAoC. I know toward the end of my playing time;I was becoming kinda bitchy lol. All the little things really started bothering me that never did before. Thats my theory.

I dont believe your getting too old. Just burnt out. Honestly, the wait for the newer releases (WAR/AOC) has been agonizingly long. The most recent MMORPG releases have been underwhelming.

you can't go any where in real life and be 100% assured you won't run into any idiots so why do you think it would be any different online? besides unlike in real life most online games have an ignore button i recommend using it. people grief others online for one reason and thats to get a rise/reaction out of others so dont give em the satisfaction put em on ignore and move on.

Ok so let me start off by saying im 15.

Now, im my honest opinion, no... you're not too old for MMO's.... I feel the same way, the communities usually are filled with .. well ... idiots.

Theres some mature kiddies too, but thats just a fraction of them.

I started playing WoW on my 13th birthday (The day my exams ended and the day I got my first very own computer and the day I started playing WoW) and got into a guild at level 60 (Pre-TBC) and we started raiding Onyxia and Molten Core etc... So our guild got a lot better, ofcourse some arrogance appeared etc and they put a 18+ age limit on the guild. A LOT of people were kicked out, and when I said I was only 13 (Or I turned 14 then, im not sure) they were shocked and thought I was over 18.

Now my point being, not all kiddies are immature but most are.

Anyway, the only GOOD community i've seen so far is in Lord of the Rings Online.

If you're dying, someone WILL help you out.

Give it a go, you might enjoy it.

I think he meant the community not the games.

I hate how what the some of the online community has become. the new thing seems to call everything bad "jewish" or their a "jew" if they arent that great and i hate that. Ill often report that kind of stuff on Live becuase that is extremely offensive to me. I will often find myself leaving groups in MMOs or leaving parties on live becuase of this crap.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

Oh ok but PvP games tend to have a more mature community, because the noobs just keep dying and quit. Hah...

And anyway, yeah I agree... that happened to me A LOT, "LOL OMG U GOT US WIPED STUPID JEW" that was in a karazhan pug (World of warcraft endgame instance with random people, not a guild) because the guy failed to heal anyone and blamed me for having bad tanking...

No. We had some 40-50 yr olds in my raiding guild when I was raiding in WoW.

They got along with the younger kids great. I loved to BS with them and didn't see them any different than anyone else.

time is "the big issue" (as far as  i belive ) to understand when u are out of the game.

as live gets more and more serious, and commitments grow bigger and faster, your time to invest into a mmo game, decrease.

is not like you are too old, or not, but, do i want /can i  invest my freetime to get a new armor for my priest, or, should i get out and buy food, or shoud i get to sleep since tomorrow i wake up early to go to work.... i hope you get my point :)

I'm an, ahem, older player, and if you do what I do, assume that almost everyone is the world is an idiot, (which isn't really true) then every time you run into a good person you'll be surprised and pleased, and for every fool, you'll feel vindicated in your initial assumption. (a win for you either way)

I solo for the most part in games, group with a few friends or a guild that I find agreeable, and even when I'm pugging it I try very hard to keep my sense of humor.

And of course, if the opportunity arises, "Im-gonna-pk-u" should be killed and camped mercilessly just because of their bad name.

I hope you aren't because I'm 62...I think it depends on the MMORPG itself...I'm still looking myself but i remember Underlight which had the most mature community i've seen..Notice I said maturity....Not always related to age

that's the kind i'm looking for.

  • angellickangellick Member Posts: 1

i know what you're talking about the kind of people who play because they are bored and don't have anything else to do AT LEAST I THINK for instance runescape wow flyff  and many more i have played those 3  but i got so sick the community nobody does help anyone always yelling that it goes to slow whit leveling and always wanting money

if you get sick of things like this to i advice to play payed games

like eve-online FFXI ragnarok online (payed version but not all people)

just a tip if you want to experience a good game whit a good community take one of these 3 and take a trail and just only join the chat and you will notice the people are much nicer

    Reiketsu,

You are not getting too old for games:) I'm in my early 40's and it seems to me that the MMO communities are getting younger and younger.

When I played AC for several years, 95%+ of us were above 18 and most of us were way beyond 18:) Then I tried WoW. I had such a crappy time there because of the community and quit after 3 months.  The rudeness and vulgarities in WoW's chat just turned me off..

I also thought that I was too old or burned out on MMOs completely. I thought my gaming years were done and I'd have to go back to watching TV every night- argh! But then I got a beta invite to LOTRO and have been playing that for 14 months now and I'm really happy with that game. The community is older and polite.

So, don't give up on gaming. Just find the games that appeal to the older gamers and like someone else said- you will always find the most mature people on the RP/roleplay servers. Don't let the RP tag intimidate you- it's not mandatory that you talk in role.

Yes, you have.  Lighten up gramps.  I'll be 45 myself this year and yes half the people I meet I want to just tell them to grow up, but then I realize that attitude is what you make of it.  If you let these people get you down, then they win.  Keep up a positive attitude and just try to muddle through.  There's still a lot of folks out there worth playing with.  Find a few that enjoy the game like you do and don't require a lot baby sitting and stick with them.

You're not too old, you're just not cynical enough.

  • TordakTordak Member Posts: 285

I agree that it's all about attitude, mine, your's and their's.

Having said that, the general nature of MMO's being; anyone you can possibly meet in real life, you'll end up seeing in textured pixels and you just can't please everyone all of the time, nor can they please you.

I've become a stead fast believer in the "/ignore" feature and use it gratuitously, although I most often remove the name of 'whomever' within 48hrs.  Usually, this works well enough, if not they go back on the list for the duration...

I do try to weigh the possibility of it being just general chat excitement, versus, the obviously someone needs a good, long nap, a "dosage" level checkup and/or permenant status in the ignore list.

In short, my reaction is balanced or offset by their over-reactions.  If I suddenly feel my temper flare or a headache comming on, well on the list you go.

Afterall, that's the last thing I'm paying a monthly premium for.

On a better note,  I've been surprised by the level of maturity that many teens put forth in their gaming and I feel they do get an unfair reputation.(Yes, there have been many that I need turn off for awhile but that's just me not being prepared/able to put with the foolishness, at the time, and I freely admit that.)

Lastly, your only to old to play when you need someone else to play for you.  Whether, that's due to mental/physical age or your so busy in your day that you hire others out to level your character for you.

....Time constraints an excuse it, doth, not make.  Cheaters!

Surely not all young folks are jerks.  The sort of behavior the OP was talking about isn't entirely based on age, but someone else has probably pointed that out already.  I mean, when I was young I wouldn't have acted like a jerk in a mmorpg.  Of course mmorpgs didn't exist back in those olden times, or the internet, so I guess I don't know for sure but I don't think I would have.

Hey, some guys in their 60's posted here!  That makes me feel good.

Hmm, well maybe the ability to tolerate childish behavior declines with age but I don't know.  I never cared much for it at any age.

I don't really have anything meaningfull to say you know.  Just felt like typing.  Maybe we need to devise a test for this.  You know, like: If you ______ you might be too old for mmorpgs.

    Ok here's one:

If you remember when they were still making new episodes of MASH...you might be too old for mmorpgs.
