MMO magazie

NeopsychNeopsych Member UncommonPosts: 324

I , like many, buy a lot of PC and game related magazines ( well, some i just read in the starbucks area of Borders), but I would love a monthly MMO only magaine that really deep dives into these games, I remember one being tried recently but it disappeared after issue 1 and some PC mags include a section on MMO's but they are usually a little shallow, half-arsed or mainly for the mod community.

Would you buy or subscribe to a real MMO magazine that covers all the mainstream games in depth?

I just tried a free issue of Beckett's MMO magazine and thought it was utter crap. I felt like half of the articles were sent in by the company the article was supposed to be about, in that, there was no critical evaluation of anything, just descriptions. Plus, I couldn't find a single interesting article in the whole issue. Blah. I don't understand how there isn't a market for this kind of magazine, considering how many MMO's there are and how many are subbed to WOW alone.

There were a few magazines that were dedicated to MMOs that I can recall.

You had Massive Online Gamer. This was a very well put together magazine that came out quarterly and I think only made it through 3 or 4 issues before renaming the mag, then dying off completely. It was slightly oversized, printed on high quality paper.

SOE Worlds, a magazine that was dedicated to all SOE MMOs, I remember getting the first issue in the mail. Never saw anything else guess it never caught on.

Finally, you have Beckett's Massive Online Gamer. This magazine comes out bi-monthly. It is a good read and there are usually some pretty cool little bonuses  like codes for paintings in EQ2, beta keys, etc. Overall, the magazine is a little on the thin side and is very WoW - centric. They do have articles on other games. This one I guess with more financial backing, and more writers on staff could develop  into a bigger magazine.

Eve Online has a dedicated magazine. Subscriptions are available directly through CCP.

I appreciate the success of WoW. HOwever, I just do not believe that MMORPGs have a large enough audiance to support a quality magazine. Understand that most every PS3/Xbox game these days has an online componant..and the lines between ONline and MMO are becoming blurred.

What I think ought to occur is the established gaming magaznines ougth to invest in having dedicated sections on MMORPGs. It would provide the quality information we want and would bring in an audiance those magazines havnt tapped into yet

Personally, I like to play MMOs but I have no interest in reading a magazine about them.

I like PC gamer. It's about all PC games, not just MMO's, but they regularly cover MMO's, especially new releases, or upcoming expansions of existing MMO's.

That's plenty of coverage for me. PLUS, you get a DVD with lots of game demos.

What you would need for an MMO Magazine is to include either DVD demos of the games, or codes to unlock easter eggs, taht sort of thing.

I subscribe to "Games for Windows" & "PC Gamer".  I like both of them and there dedication to PC games only.

I sub to Becketts, not sure if it is US only though. This last issue had around 6 total pages of Warhammer, 4 more pages of Conan, a guide to PotBS, article on EVE Online, and they have Warcraft AH prices, quest guides, guild of the months, player interviews, and so on.
