Is there a sandbox MMO(rpg)?

I had high hopes in LOTRO but that game has me on its marionette strings too tight. You play like on rails. Go offroad and you're completely lost.

My Online gaming Background is Settlers 3, EQ, DAoC,Horizons, EQ2, WoW, LOTRO. Most of those games where fun for a while - EQ and Settlers being the best i guess. I also tried Eve Online but didnt like it. WoW was bad because it felt so trivial. LOTRO was even worse than that.

I guess what i am hoping for is a game with more freedom where i can do what i want, the way i want to. Not following a big bright mainstream route prepared by uncreative devs.

I heard Asherons Call might be good or Runescape... I wouldnt mind trying older games - im not so easy caught with nice graphics, gameplay is more important for me. My PC is 3 years old too and had some trouble with LOTRO.

all suggestions welcome

    No entirly sandbox, UO is the closest one. Darkfall is in development. I'd think that's it.

    The games for you are Wurm online or Roma Victor. They are 2 really great sanbox games

    For sandbox MMO, you may also want to lok into Saga of Ryzom (If its still up) and SWG (despite all the hatred from players who used to pay it, its still one of the better sandbox MMO) and EvE Online.

    Ryzom is not available; GF was unable to keep the game community, and managed to fall into a receivership, plus they violated their contract agreement and were not paying the Ryzom branch-staff. However there is news that someone has bid on the game (Spiderweb International), but I suspect nothing will happen with Ryzom for a while if at all. The rumor is that it has been bought only for its engine...but I didn't start that rumor.

    SWG is still up but I’ve never played that game so I can’t comment on it. I can suggest two upcoming games that promise to be sandbox MMO’s. These games are currently in development but IMO they are worth the wait and support. W.E.L.L and Earthrise.

    I’m leaning toward Earthrise because I’m tired of the fantysy theme MMO’s and level based system. Earthrise’s concept is pure skill based offering a real sandbox experience and character ‘unique’ development. I’m so taken by this game I’ve begun work to establish and RP-Community – Earthrise Role-player Association (errpa.org) the site is currently underconstruction. If you want to know more visit the ER forums, come on by and say hello, the community is very friendly and mature.

    W.E.L.L also has an interesting concept but unlike Earthrise it is a fantasy theme MMO with a level based system but not class restricted. Some of the Ryzom elite community has set camp for this game and have build a fansite which you can also visit for more information. Good luck with your search.

    I know this is a bit off-topic but, WELL's logo resembles a Stargate...all I can say is...wow.

     

    Edit: I must say, Earthrise looks like it could potentially be a very nice sandbox.
