I see both sides of the fence because my guild is going to play both games. We try not to get into that AoC vs WAR troll debate on who joins one forum to troll or the other.
Why not try and play both and make an informed decision on your own ? I will be buying and playing both as I think its rather stupid to go by hype official or non pre retail launch -
There's no written law that says you have to like one and hate the other - only stupid fanbois of either assume "thier" game is automatically better than the other one
Blablablablabla AOC blablablabla WAR. 90% of all sentences have sources without no real insight anyway so why listen to any of it.
I think both games will be good, based on the overall impressions I've had from examinating both games. However, to me, a MMORPG miracle only happends once. That was SWG to me and I know I won't ever be as happy about a MMORPG again as I was then.
So instead I will play WAR as a game without any real commitment as I'd have to put into a game where you build cities and a game that is more in-depth (AoC). That way I will probably not play AoC because I've had it with games that I feel tied up to.

Anyone saying that is in Beta is breaking NDA contract. Do i have to pull off my drawing skills?
So you comment on WAR beta without being in it, because WAR allows you to say you are in beta. And then you comment on things only beta testers would know for AoC, so you could have no idea what you are talking about. Basically what I wanted to hear out of you. Thank you.
If i admit i was in Beta (witch i dont) everything i posted above would be considered NDA breaking!

Not a problem, just confirming you aren't in WAR beta.
I just watched some trailer vids for AOC. The one I saw the most of was showing off the dungeon gameplay, it was one of those "designer guiding the reporter" things.
What I gleened from it is that the combat system is based around striking different parts of the enemy and the enemy moving his "shields" to better defend the spot that is getting hit. So instead of "click attack repeatedly" it's "click up attack repeatly until it's defended then switch" which doesn't strike me as a ground breaking improvement.
Second thing I noticed (well it actually was the first) was that the animation seemed... off, stilted but it is a beta so I'm willing to let that slide.
Next was that the classic tactic of "pull the boss to the safe area" was being employed (infact the dev suggested it) a game that is touting itself as action packed should not be using this mechanic, it should be head long and balls to the wall.
Fourth I noticed that the healer spent her time standing around waiting to be useful, now I'm hoping that Funcom realizes that being a healer with nothing to do is boring and gives them something besides "wait for mana>cast a heal" but I saw none of that in the vid.
Lastly everyone gets stealth of some sort. True it does fit with the Conan lore but I don't see where it a good idea as a game play mechanic.
TLDR version: It appears to be WoW where everyone is a Rogue with 5 basic attacks (instead of just 1), the animation is from a box and healers are still boring.

I'll look at this from the view of someone who has played Jedi Knight Academy : (Movie Battles II Mod).
The striking of different body parts, and defending with shield (saber in JKA-MBII) may look good on paper. Unfortunately I suspect there will be some problems for this combat system in an MMO.
1. Lag - If a player hits a nice lag spike while fighting another, the opponent can simply run around behind and start slashing them in the back of the head.
(Jedi running in place due to lag, Sith runs around behind the Jedi and says "Oooo thank you for the kill, *poke*.")
2. Exploit - There will be players who run in and spam the same combo attacks over and over.
(Blue style side sweep on JKA - MBII)
3. The WTF? Factor - If either 1. or 2. is widely experienced in combat, and is continuously determining your fate (for worse and not better), many players may pull some good ole /ragequitting.
Overall, that combat system has a greater chance of causing grief compared to the majority of others.

Thank you for showing the rest of us your lack of maturity time and time again.
I for one am not thinking about the combat system or graphics as of yet. Don't get me wrong combat system is very important, but my TOP PRIORITY is large amounts of content. I hate to say it but the only 3 that I found with this is WoW, EQ2 and Lotro may be getting there. Please don't go into a WoW sucks thread I'm only talking about large amounts of content.
What makes a game for me is when it's so intriguing and rich with stuff to do, that you can't seem to stop. A game that you almost call off of work because in hind sight you remembered a cave that you did not check before you turned the computer off. I don't care if there stick figures or an old style engine like Ultima Online( I'm exaggerating ok ).
I would like a game that modern technology was used to make a dungeon deeper with more traps. I don't care much about how my toon looks and I definitely don't like being stopped in the middle of an adrenaline rush to watch a movie clip.
Warhammer seems like thay would have the best chance of attaining what I value most. It may not be every ones priority but it's what I would like.
For the love of DAOC, and i hope for something like this just alot better, then the old days. Beside this i allso hope that they this time whit all there experince and know how, mange to make the classes, they adventure alot more balanced and personal.
*There is alot of games out there i love to play beside Warhammer, but to be they lost me, in there lack of RVR and PVP. Yes yes i know some guys will say its not all about pvp and rvr...ect. but for me there is nothing els then this acpects.
Beside the Auraer around the classes. And yes DAOC did not have that, i know, but its there first tru. So lats see what they come up whit this time.
I'm going to get both AoC and WAR. I love DAOC it was one of the best games I've played online and the RVR was amazing if WAR is anything like it i'll enjoy it but AoC also looks good. Plus theres a month if not more between the two release dates so if I hate AoC I can easily change.
Offline RPGs always fail because they have a huge missing component....other people.
If Planescape: Torment is a failure, then I want to fail every single day of my life. Give me a good story (which, by the way, is surely not The Witcher) over MMO chat any day. Offline RPG classics like Torment or Baldur's Gate 2 are Joseph Conrad to the ordinary MMORPG's Jack Higgings.
Yeah, yeah, I'll play WAR, too. I'm expecting it to work a bit like Quake 1 play sessions for me. Quick and dirty.

Don't you think that Funcom and the thousands upon thousands of beta testers have thought of these things? I mean, these are issues that have been well documented for years and addressed repeatedly.
Even IF those concerns were valid, at least Funcom is trying something different. I don't know if either WAR or AoC will be successes or if WoW will just continue to dominate; but I'm not going to pass judgement or make assumptions about a game I've never played.
I think what he is saying is they should be applauded for trying something new. If that pans out or not remains to be sign, and they are valid concerns, but it is worth praising for trying something new. WAR is sticking with a combat system that is proven, and that tons of people KNOW they enjoy.

I'm not sure that you can say that ANY combat system is "proven". I've seen the standard MMORPG combat system hacked or otherwise abused with some type of repetitive combo system. The criticisms or concerns levied against AoC, I would levy against almost any currently released MMO out there right now.
We've seen over and over again the AoC combat system proven to be both innovative and functional. I'm not sure what else needs to be said.
I hear a lot of negative things from WAR testers and people who have followed the game for a long time, and I try to be objective best I can because I love the Warhammer universe and love the games currently released and the lore (By the way, apparently Warhammer 40,000 2 is going to be announced soon). I hate to see MMOs fail because I love them and what they represent to the gaming community.
If AoC turns out to be a bust and WAR turns out to be the most fun and popular MMO of all time, I'll be the first one to tout its merits. I'm hoping both with be successes right now.
To be honest, and I am a very active part of the majority of the WAR forums, only two people have ever actually BEEN in WAR beta and stated they didn't like it. Countless times people have bashed it on here and claimed to be in WAR beta yet when I try to set something up to meet them in game, they all of a sudden disappear and end up not posting for a couple days.

Hopefully that is a positive sign from the game's perspective.

Yea, I noticed that one too... Beta leaks on the net are all negative while I hear all the best from 2 of my RL friends who got recently invited... Is it a NDA breach if you come over to your friend's house to watch him play?
I'm going to get both AoC and WAR. I love DAOC it was one of the best games I've played online and the RVR was amazing if WAR is anything like it i'll enjoy it but AoC also looks good. Plus theres a month if not more between the two release dates so if I hate AoC I can easily change.
Agreed. I don't understand why you have to pick one, when you can try and play both? I've preordered AoC and I'm going to try it, if it's good I'll continue playing. I'll do the same to WAR and some other interesting MMO titles.
Well i'm sure the end result is that I'll try both AoC and War. If AoC comes out first and if War seems to have more delays. I'll play AoC, after all I built a good computer with DX 10 just for it beck in December when it was giving every indication of release, only to pull the plug two weeks before.
Since December and playing a few modern off-line games, I noticed that games as least for me they were going in a backward direction as far as content. Its hard for me to put in words, so the best way I could explain backwards is that there trying to add too many movie clips, and concentrating on sparkling graphics to say " hay look at are game, it has the latest technology" and gamers have to pay the price of not having rich and abundant content like deep caves to explore, and a large world without load times.
It's only my guess and it's only my opinion, but it seems that AoC maybe trying to do this, what I call a backwards approach. I'm really not trying to bash AoC, even if it seems that way, but there just trying to be modern, and persanally I don't like the new modern approach, but that's just me.
I'm sure I'll wind up with both, however I'll wate until after AoC release and after most people get past the solo content to see how well AoC is doing.
I know what your thinking. How do you know AoC will be backwards like you say ? I don't It's just a good guess !
