Heylo people
I bought the 7th anniversary edition and started it up and BAM I have no idea what the hell I am doing! In regarding to controls that is. It is very difficult to maneuver and this has deterred me away. But wherever I go I here UO this and UO that, that game is not as good as UO, I remember one time in UO!, In UO you can do this, etc! And I am like man, there is something in that game that I am missing, hence I only spent like 5 min in game. But I need to get pass the controls first.
Perhaps there is a turorial on good key bindings? Or macros I could make?
You have to understand that I am a MMO player that has grown up on the following, starting from the beginging: DAOC, Planetside, SWG, EVE, CoH
In those games the controls are easy to grasp and doesnt take a wiz to figure out. But that is what I am used to and I think 2nd gen players have a hard time with UO especially 2nd gen newbie players.
So lets say in some near futue I get a hang of the game play. I am starting to read alot of negative posts about UO that so and so expansion killed it or its become like diablo, (I like diablo btw, but I also want a game that is challenging, I play diablo for only shits and giggles) or the emersion factor is gone etc etc.
What are some reasons for this and is it even worth my time to get over some of the initial hangups the game has regarding 2nd gen newbies learning this new odd play style.
There several things that I have read about UO that interests me and I am just curious if I am missing out. Dont know if my post was thorogh enough, but I did my best, lol

There are free shards you can play on that use the good features of the AoS expansion but leave out all the lame stuff that has been created since EA took control.
Alot of those servers even have more content then the pay to play servers ran by OSI. The free servers had some stuff even before OSI did. Multiple races, mounts like seahorses, dragons(not the swamp dragons either) dolphins, etc.
These servers used to be laggy and unstable but they have changed alot. EA has even assisted one group of developers. One emulator supposedly can now host over 3k people and be stable.
After I stopped playing UO I came across these, and It felt like the old days when UO was great... but even better in some ways. Now though I cant stand UO at all. After installing AoS I played a couple hours then uninstalled UO for the last time.

i started playing UO in 97 the controls are very simple and if you want a good proggy to manage your macros and such go to www.tugsoft.com and try UOAssist its free for 15 days i belive and its $15 one time fee to buy, or if you decide to play free shards get Razor is the UOAssist for free shards
Ok thanks for the response guys, I never knew there was a thing called free servers? Meaning there is absolutely no monthly fee? and if I understand you reply Digi I need to buy a program called Razor that is a one time payment and I can play indefinately free?
Thanks
no razor is a macro tool, so is UOAssist, Uo Assist is $15 and is used with The EA servers, Razor is used with the Free Shards, but take in mind with free shards you dont get the population and all of the things you may want
Ya population is important. And since I am not a player that is pre UO expansions I might not know what I am missing anyways. So perhaps I should just stick with the regular EA servers.
I wish the UOassist had a free trial as well.
Maybe what I should do is try razor and join the free servers and just get a hang of the gameplay and then decide if I want to keep playing and if I do and the population is low in those servers, I could then switch over.
uoassist does have a free trial which i stated in the above post its 15 days free
Yeah the free servers dont have the population numbers that the pay to play has. Some have had over a thousand players on at once though, which is a decent amount. Servers useing RunUO were the most stable.
If you are interested check your favorite search engine for UOGateway. That program will pull up a list of over 500 free shards. About 30 of those might require a donation to play. Alot of those will have under 20 people, but the top 10 should have several houndreds of players up to a thousand even at peak time.
NOTE:
Some people will consider the free servers as being illegal, yet they need to look at their box for that EA logo on it. OSI was absorbed into EA, and things have changed on how they feel about free shards. EA/OSI doesn't care about the UO ones anymore long as they behave. EA has even assisted the developers of one of the server emulators from what I've heard. Free shards are deemed "illegal" but are tolerated by EA because it's free advertising. By saying they deem it against the TOS, they have leverage and loopholes if it causes a major negative impact, and can't get sued for it either.

ROFL! Dumbasses!
Can't they see they're losing so much business??
Thats EA for ya... the dont have a clue when it comes to MMORPGs. They have had 6 or so in the last 3 years, and only 2 are still alive.
If EA never bought UO, Ultima Online 2 would of never been canceled. That game looked better then UO:X imo.

Well I have had a time trying to get into UO.
Firstly I installed the 2d and 3d verions but the 3d patcher would not update. And the sprite animation in the 2d version looked so choppy. Remember I am from a different time period lol. So I uninstalled it and got the 3d version to update but I was playing around with the game resolution and the screen went grey but I could move the mouse and its like that everytime I login.
Is there a way to change the screen rez outside of the game? Dont want to uninstall again. I got UO assist but will have to read more guides on how to use it.
I spent the better part of the night doing all this without playing
I have under 24hrs before my free month is up too
unfortunately that boat has already sailed far far away. The EA UO that is now in effect is left with alot of kids and alot of carebears. Given though every game has carebears and thats a good thing but a whole game shouldnt be catered towards them. The UO your playing right now is with people scared to fight 1 v 1 and all they wanna do is catch you 5 v 1 etc. Now if you want to dont pay that 12$ a month. Goto UOgateway.com and download there program this will let you access hundreds of shards/servers. Some great ones are Defiance Shard and IPY shard the thing you have to look out for on IPY is due to the huge popularity there is a big community. There are some cool people on ipy and there are some a$$hole$ but thats how it always was in any mmorpg really just becareful and dont worry about your first character it will take you 3 characters to learn how to make a descent one. But if your looking for some guidence you can message me with XFIRE www.xfire.com download that nice little program and my handle is HellProphet.. but you missed the good ole days when Richard Garriot and OSI were in charge. Those days are kinda non-replaceable but you can get a bit of a feel for it if you play IPY. but anyways if your interested message me with xfire... that goes for anyone trying to catch a classic feel for UO....
