LOTRO or EQ2?

stoofastoofa Member Posts: 3

Hi all

I'm planning to pick up another MMORPG after a bit of time away from the genre and gaming in general. I played WoW for around a year and a half prior to this, and got to the point where I was a bit jaded. I really loved WoW while levelling my first character (ie while all the content was fresh) although after an extended period at 70 I was only logging for raids, so to a degree I guess i've just exhausted the content and my WoW time has reached the end of its natural life

In essence i'm looking for something similar, but ideally with a bit more involvement and focus on the RPG side (WoW seems to be moving more and more towards the PvP angle)

Priorities are as follows:

Involving PvE

Plenty of options for group based play / multiplayer interaction

Preferably not excessively grind orientated

Nice to look at

Not particularly interested in PvP (like WoW arena/battlegrounds) I'm looking more for an RPG that has multiplayer interaction, not a fantasy version of unreal that requires you to level up first...

Looking at the games currently available, the two that catch my eye immediately are Lord of the rings online and Everquest 2. Any views on which would be a better choice based on the above (or other suggestions that aren't so immediately obvious)

Thanks in advance

you were right with both choice. But, I think for the roleplay part, lotro is way better.

I played both game, I like both game, I feel grouping in everquest is more important, and more fun. But you soloing is easier in lotro, while it's better and funner to group to finish quest while in eq2, you group for exp.

You should definetly try lotro first, than go try eq2. I can give you a nice founder trial key if you send me you email, send it to my inbox.

    Depends on what you want.

Lotro is much more beautiful graphics wise, and the engine is better optimized. The EQ2 gameplay though is much deeper with better character development and more fun combat.

I don't agree with soloing being easier in Lotro in fact from my experience it is the other way around. Both games are great soloing games, with tons of good group combat on top of that. Actually grouping in Lotro was a superb experience, yet to me the character building and feel of the world as a whole has dragged me back to EQ2.

I have a founder/lifetime sub. for Lotro and yet I keep going back to EQ2 instead, it is hard to point to exactly why but I feel the gameplay of EQ2 is simply more fun and involving.

But, both are great games and I think you will find both to be good pve experiences.

I would like to express the stated fact LOTRO is more optimized. That is a understatement.

LOTRO works totally sweet on my system. It's a very solid engine and very pretty.

Not only is it very good eye candy but the different lands have such different feel to them. The storyline is of course LOTR so if your a fan at all you'll get hooked on that aspect like I did. There is so much detail to the world elements. The new custom looks you can give your character ensures the game will not have everyone looking the same because they all want that same max armor. I see lots of role playing.

LOTRO is not a pvp game. I didn't enjoy the monster play at all. It seems like a ranged blob fest that has no real meaning. It really cheapens a very solid PVE MMORPG.

As for LOTRO being easy to solo? I totally disagree. There are many "fellowship" quests that no way are you soloing unless your higher level then when you recieve the mission. Teams are fun and the game engine really shines in large group fights. It runs so nice on my comp.

Just try it and see what you think. I wish I had not listened to reviews and tried it much sooner.

As for everquest, well I come from SWG beta up until SOE totally ruined it with NGE. They lied many times to me and thousands of others. I will NEVER play another SOE game no matter what it is.

honestly, I wager you will be happy in either EQ2 or LOTRO. I would say that LOTRO has a better storyline, whereas EQ2 is a more rounded game.

    Good Luck

If you have a good group of steady people to play with then LOTRO is quite a lot of fun. If your going in as a new player alone, Id recommend EQ2, its better from the solo/small group setting.

    Agreed.

Though if your able to try either one for free, that might be your best bet.

Not sure if LOTRO has a free trial, but EQ2 does (havent played LOTRO since beta/launch, so I am out of touch with any info on it, but I have seen quite a few ads for the EQ2 trial)

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Crafting in EQ2 alone is worth at least a month of play to experience IMO. Its the most enjoyable crafting system of any game I have played yet.
