I've played DAoC since August 2002. I've played some other games with much reluctance and begging from the hubby. But, after all these years and games I think I finally know what I like and don't like. I like grouping and laughing while everyone dies instead of endless questing. I don't really care about levels or skills... I loved SWG and all the things you could mix and match and all the running around to explore and get POI's. I did not like WoW at all other than I could use my arrow keys to move instead of my mouse. LotRO, EQI/II, DDO and a couple others were WoW in drag. I know that appeals to the masses, and I can't figure out why, but I must be weird because I don't like it. I didn't mind doing the quests for Epic Armor, but I'd rather avoid quests and just explore and hunt.
I know I'm aiming high, but I wish I could find something like DAoC used to be. I like to set my hotkeys and short cuts, I HATE MOUSING... I like the arrow keys, why else are they there? I like 3rd person view, and moving the interface window thingies so my health is always bottom right. I've spent the last few weeks downloading games and trying them just to be sure I haven't overlooked anything on the list. I prefer fantasy, but if I can't have it I will settle below my standards... which seem to be sinking as quick as my hopes.
Hubby is bouncing up and down about Age of Conan, but it was pushed back so I need to fill the void and have something to fall back on just in case it's another Vangard fiasco. Darkfall sounded like everything I wanted until I read it's only 1st person. I've learned not to hold my breath, but I hope I'm not the only one who loved the old DAoC. I saw a few suggestions in the LFG Roleplay threads, but roleplay doesn't seem to be a very big part of MMORPG's...
Thanks a bunch

there are a LOT of Old DAOC players who still feel DAOC was their best MMORPG experience to date (Myself included). There is still players who harbor realm loyalty (Myself included...Die Hibbies!). Many are awaiting the released of WAR or AoC (seems split between the two). However, Since you liked DAOC so much, have you considered retuning and playing DAOC while you wait?. There has been a resurgance of players in DAOC as they become burnt out on WoW and await the next big release. The classic servers (which have removed BOTs and ToA expansion) are by far the most populated. Keep sieges , battlegrounds and Tower defenses occuring practically non-stop.
May be something to consider.
If not, Try a go with the MMORPG Finder and search for PvP Gameplay and Fantasy. May give you some leads. Also you can search to see where other DAOC players are now playing.
Good Luck

I too am an x DAOC player. I would play untill Mythic's nerffing would drive me away...than come back etc etc.I have finally deleted all my characters closed my account and erased it from the HD.The classic servers are bott filled like all the others...so thats not a reason to return.I have been questing for the exact same thing you have....and have not found it.I entered the AOC beta prayer to the gods contest and silently hope my prayer is selected for a beta slot.
Want a world to just go and hunt in for a temporary fix....maybe VG. They have a FFA server if you really want to hunt people.Personally FFA is too far from faction warfare for me..but perhaps you may like that.A number of classes are good solo classes. Another thought...POTBS.(faction warfare at sea)
Good luck on your difficult quest.
I agree with Arawon, I mispoke. Bots themselves are not removed but there are not distance restrictions on Buffs, thus is someone is going to have a bot, they must at least put them in play where we have a chance to kill them.

Being a woman, I'm a bit emotional. I cried when SWG died, and I cried when Sanya left... maybe even died a little inside too. I've gone back so many times, and restarted on so many different servers. I'll always be an Alb at heart, but between our 7 accounts we have 50's of every class and LGM of everything... good thing they decided to combine everything after we gave up.
5 years ago... I rolled a new toon because I had never played a caster. I hunted down by Adribards Retreat for hours and saved up 3 silver and some change. I ran over to sell loot and saw a big guy in shiny armor. I was sweating, scared to ask but I took a deep breath and sent him a tell explaining I was trying to get to Cots to meet up with the rest of our friends who all rolled new toons and politely asked for 1 silver and the change for a horse ticket. He gave me 5 gold! And wished me luck... awww I was so happy.
Now... (not that we need horses because of all the porting) Similar scenario = Roll a Necro and farm it yourself, n00b!
Where did all the cool people go? I am the gamer I am today because I "grew up" in that community. I'm scared to go back because what friends we have that still play only 8-man, and I hate it. I know it isn't polite, but when raids dwindle down and we default into an 8-man... I pull the plug and go ld in the middle of nowhere because I just can't handle it, I guess it reminds me too much of the weird instance battle things in WoW and stuff
Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I really appreciate a non-flaming reply more than anyone could ever know And I'm even happier to know I'm not alone...
Alone? hardly. In fact looking at the way you express your feelings..I wager you are a part of a majority of players who feel similarly. Cool players havnt gone anywhere...they've just been suppressed by WoW
We really are in a MMORPG recession. Its my hope that WAR and AoC (And AION/Spellborne) will break us out. What Ive been doing is contacting all my old DAOC kin...its great to hear from them, and we are now planning as to which game to go to and coordinate to one server and side. you may want to dust off some old guild lists and email addy's...you and your hubby could do something similar.
Good Luck!

That sounds like a great idea! We still talk to a few of them, but we played so many servers it's almost impossible to track everyone down. We did have some really good times with a few select guilds and have kept in touch as best we can for how much relocation we do in real life.
But... since we've started over a billion times on tons of different games, I'm excited about another oppertunity to try something fresh out of the gate. And I hope the new games can breath new life into MMO's and show every type of player that there is more out there and it's ok to break away from the herd and graze somewhere else.
(I've been having fun with the mmo finder thingy... thanks again! )
I would consider waiting for WAR.
Mythic is creating the game in association with EA.
I played daoc since beta and feel exactly the same way.
I have been looking for a game like EQ for about 3 years now, and no, WoW, EQ2, LoTRs and the current EQ are not like the EQ im talking about.
DAOC was my second favorite game and i would be very happy finding a game like that too.
Sadly nothing that is currently out matches up to those games at all. Vanguard might be getting better and might actually be worth playing now but my system still cant handle it.
I have some hope for AOC but i have a sinking feeling inside that i will be disappointed.
They dont make MMOs like they used to make them. Sadly im starting to think that they never will again.
I am a firm believer that DAoC was the best MMO ever made before it was molested by mythic to the point of quiting. WAR just continues this path of molestation, taking every good aspect of RvR and turning it into a PvE experience, instead of pvp which is what it is suppose to be. Its my opinion that as far as the keep battles and such found in DAoC go, Age of Conan has taken them to the next level, whereas warhammer has taken them a step backwards. Though they are to totaly different games, AoC is focuses on hardcore free for all pvp with the option to play on a pve server with pvp limited to the border kingdoms. Warhammer focuses on an easy to play graphicaly inferior game that is dumbed down to be rounded for everyone, pvp is played out in instances or spawn camping zergs with very little if any keep seiges. Their focus is the mass market that WoW introduced, mostly consisting of Asians and North Americans around the age of 13.
If you want something fresh and innovated, that takes DAoC a step higher, I believe Age of Conan is the game to do this. If you want the sequel to world of warcraft that is a de-evolution of DAoC, I believe Warhammer is right for you.
On a side note, I really have no faith in mythic, one of the big things that got me, after they killed the game off with poor content and stupidity was the login poll. The one in particular that asked if you would pay extra for some basic game features, IE: transfering your character off a dead server like mordred, and some other stuff that was a direct result of Mythics neglect of the game and killing it off. Such things that should have been done for free to keep the game alive. I dont know where Mythic got the nerve to ask players to make micro payments and still continue their monthly fee, the account split for 40$ and the cost of a new account with all the expansions enabled (another 50$) was rediculous enough on its own. As far as I'm concerned, Mythic could pull out the best game ever made (which they cant and wont) and I still wouldn't buy/play it just because the bastards are so greedy and selfish.
I also agree DAoC was probably the finest game around, but I have found that Pirates of the Burning Seas (PotBS) is the closest thing I found to it. The Nation verus Nation combat has the same good feeling for me that DAoC RvR had, and like DAoC the smaller nations(in population) seem to be a very tight knit community. Playing French reminds me a lot of playing Middies, low population but plenty of pride. The game definetly isn't for everyone but those that enjoyed DAoC are the most likely ones who will enjoy it.

I can't help but totally agree with Slineer. Well put.
Neither of us have any desire to even bat an eyelash at WAR. Not just because Mythic has lost our trust, but mostly because it does reek of WoW. *holds nose*
I'm not sure if he was joking (hard to tell when it comes to games), but hubby thought it would be cool to pile a bunch of DAoC vets in AoC and build a city thing and all that nifty stuff. I'm all for it as long as we get matching cloaks! ...or something...
Pirates of the Burning Sea sounds awesome, especially because our medieval reenactment timeframe ends just before the pirate era, so I would actually get to play a pirate! ...maybe? Is the interface and controlls similar? I would have loved Voyage Century if not for the 100% mouse thing. Mouses are for catses
