Direct x10 worth it or not.

I'm trying to decide if all the pain and agony expressed over Vista is worth it for a more *finished* game. Ive gotten very accustomed to Windows XP, and just keep hearing bad things and the occasional "Vistas not to bad".

Long story short with planing on upgrading my comp which has not been upgraded it in 4 years except for replacing a blown power supply, trying to decide if buying Vista is worth it for playing any of the upcoming games, most of my Interest's Lie in AoC, and WAR. I also do a bit of Photoshop and movie editing.

What's everyone else's thoughts on this? anyone else had a similar dilemma. Thanks for the posts (if i get any )

I just recently bought a new computer. In fact, it is still in the mail right now. I bought the Vista and a DX10 compatible card, because after seeing games without DX10 graphics compared to games without it, I'd much prefer with the DX10 graphics.

Let's put it this way; if you do not like Vista, you could always install XP from your old computers disk. It's been out for about a year or a little over a year now I think if not longer, so most of the serious bugs should be gone by now.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

    Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

Ya, i've had some kind of opinion just few of my friends have strong dislikes for vista guess its just rubbing of on me.

Im just going to look up a some comparison shots of DX9 v 10 and see how big of a difference appears. And like you said I could just throw up XP on a differnt partition and load my old games on that one.

    Much Thanks

Unless the system you plan on using is fairly high end, having a vista system will make no difference, yet.  So far, the only dx10 coding used in games is only for the absolute highest settings available.  Take Crysis for example, the only system able to run crysis at 1920x1200 with max settings (thus using flashy dx10 effects) is running two GeForce 8800 Ultras in SLI.

Granted, AoC will be far less demanding, but again, to enable those nice effects will take a heavy hitter.  As for War, as far as I know dx10 isn't used.  (Though I could be wrong, I haven't been following it too closely.)

I like vista itself, don't get me wrong.  Granted, I did run into a few problems, but its been running incredibly smooth for a long time now.  I very rarely crash, maybe once a month.  (And I never turn off my machine or put it to sleep, so crash = monthly reboot.)

If you've got the hardware to back it up, dx10 is definitly worth it.  Don't let everyone saying it makes no difference get you down.  The difference in Crysis is unreal, and the fur in Lost planet looks real enough to make animal rights activists go nuts.

However, until developers start pushing out dx10 required games, owning vista is completely unnecessary.  Which, of course, leads one to assume that it will be quite a while until that time comes.

And so, my advice... If you've got the horsepower, go for it.  If you don't, hold off.  Games generally run a little slower on Vista compared to XP.

After a couple months of Vista I went back to XP for many reasons other than gaming. Friend of mine just had a custom built computer made. He was told by the company making it, that if he wanted to use it for serious gaming, he was better off to use XP.

As long as u are just upgrading parts n such, I would keep XP. If you are buying a new PC I would say have it shipped with Vista. As long as you have an XP cd you can switch back if you don't like vista. That way you have a copy of Vista if you need it. But as I understand 2009 a new version of windows is commin out...might be better to wait out the year with XP n hope the next version of windows is an improvement over Vista.

Vista here.. with DX10 card....  cant tell you the diference between the DX10 and DX9 at all.. because the games that I have that are DX10... like UT3... I never tryed them in XP with DX9...

The point is... how do I know if DX10 is better if never seen a game runing on both configurations...??

As of now, UT3 does not use dx10.  Epic is talking about adding/tweaking in order to take advantage of it, but as of this writing UT3 is 100% dx9.  The only difference you will notice running UT3 on both Vista and XP is a lower framerate on Vista.

The games that I have noticed a huge difference in I mentioned above.  Even small, subtle dx10 effects look incredible.

When you are playing ut3 on vista you are using dx9 emulation.  Even when they patch it to use dx10 I don't expect them to add new effects or anything, most likely it will boost performance on Vista.

Games that I can think of off the top of my head that use dx10 are Crysis, Company of Heroes, Lost Planet, Gears of War (only for anti-aliasing)... and I can't think of any more at the moment.

Remember, right now there are no games whatsoever that are coded 100% for dx10.   We won't see the full benefit until a game is designed from the ground up for it, and when that happens, the game will not be playable on XP at all.

Age of Conan is really the only game out there with a significant difference in visuals AND performance. The game runs preety damn smooth, espically considering its in beta.
