Try eve online and see if you like it ,it isnt "gear" based and despite all of the naysayers who only played for 1 day max, skill points =/= win, after 1-2 weeks you can fight on par with someone that has +15mil SP.

EvE doesnt have any defined end game,it's a sandbox mmo,end game is what you make it.Most people opt to further delve in the political conflicts in eve and join a important alliance, while others just try to monopolize the market and rake in big isk.

Another game I can suggest that doesnt have gear grind as end game is guild wars, apart from those most other mmos are solely gear grind for end game.

1-2 weeks? you kinda stretching it man, more like 1-3 months, if you push the immediate skills you gain. but overall your post  basically in truth as i played eve for a good year or 2. but dont let it be omitted, this game is at times ruthlessly hard. so not for the faint of heart, the word of thumb is the higher the reward, the greater the risk majority of the gains as well as the related risks are all in in 0.0 space, but u can play it safe in highsec space.  u can defintiely make hundreds of millions without firing a single blaster or firing a missle. i just got bored of the game after  a while. gate camping, mining/ratting to maintain my ship whenever i got podded by a group of cloaked vaginas.(those who play know what im talking about) aka vagabonds for the less inclined lol. i hate them lol they always manage to warp in on me while im taking down some rats i never see them fast enough ro when i do, they come in so damn fast i barely have enough time to warp out. bunch of hit and run p****ies!. but u live and learn real quick lol. or u die and dont recover.

COH/COV isnt gear dependant... u get everything u need while u level.
and this i found to be its biggest drawback. gear is a key element in RGPs it gives u something to be looking forward to and gives u a great fealing of sucess once u have it.

but most games do it wrong in giving u to low options to get it. either it is to run into a raid until u get it dropped or grind for for month.

eco + crafting + raiding + grind + something new maybe; if u get em all into a good balance and dont make it ridiculously hard nor too easy to get ur stuff gearing can be a great and actually fun timesink in endgame.

just about anything that  isn't mainstream.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
