Perfect World - Open Beta Impressions

I have recently had a bit of free time to spend checking out the Open Beta of Perfect World. The game appealed to me because of its familiarity, I have been a Lineage 1 and 2 player for quite awhile and the promise of an in game housing system,

My first impression of the game were extremely positive, the game had the PvP and interface system that I loved in Lineage 2, yet it had an intuitive and easy questing system like World of Warcraft. As I pregoressed further and further into the game my feeling about it changed.

The developers of Perfect World took a very safe approah to development, taking successful features from many other games and mashing them up to form a new game, and unlike most of games of this sort the features are actually carefully implemented and thought out.

When the first excitement of trying a new game dissaperared I was left a feeling that everything I was doing I had already done before. The same generic kill quests, the delivery quests, and as you got to the higher levels the same old grind fest.

There are 3 races in the game with 2 classes each. Personally I thought this number was a little low for a modern MMO, but the game mad up for it by giving you a deep character design process. There are probably literally thousands of different ways to customize your characters apperance... even down to the very tilt of the characters nose.

Housing is not yet implemented in the English Beta, so unfortunately I did not get to experience that aspect of the game. What I did get to experience was the lag. Lag is a problem for NA players as the servers for the game are locaded in Malaysia. While not extremely horrible there seems to be a .5 - 1.5 second delay between using some skills when there should'nt be any, and while this does not seem like much it is noticable and definately detracts. There are currently no plans for a NA server.

As for PvP... The PK system is nearly identical to Lineage 2, which I am a fan of. Later on the territorial warfare works closely to a game of the Warcraft III game DOtA. Sides start on seperate ends, with 3 paths to the enemy stronghold, to win you must destroy the enemy stronghold.

The game is powered my the Unreal 3 engine so it was definately pleasant to the eyes. Not only that but it ran very well on my laptop aswell and does not take much system resources.

Perfect World plays it safe and can provide a lot of fun for people not familiar with MMOs, but I am unsure if the fun will last for veterans like me, who have played many other MMOs and see that the game wont provide anything new in terms of gameplay.

He played the Malaysian one.   I play that one as well and rather enjoy the game but the lag is annoying.  I hope someone brings it to the US eventually.

Well it is all quest based.  Leveling off of just killing mobs takes forever and ever.  The quests are what level you.

Not in the 60s and 70s they dont... Past a certain point in that game it turns into grind.

The lag was just fine until a lot more players started putting selling mules in the main city.  Last time I played months ago there was probably a hundred or so people with player booths there, can't imagine how many there are now.  With that many players constantly logged in, that can't be helping the lag situation.

    You forgot the sad part:

full of hacks, bots, stat modifiers, exploits, dupes etc. game made by chinese exploited heavily by chinese.

full of chinese farmers who know the game inside out for sometime now spamming and selling anything.

in rest.. its not bad.. a very well done game for a F2P item mall kind of game.

Played Perfect World as a froob player and i am quite convinced now that this game is not going to give you endgame without going for the item shop. Moreover the Hierograms or the mp and hp auto fill ups are a must and hence there is no or limited chance to make the character go and grind without them starting at levels 50+. Thus may be it is a temporary game  but i do mind going for a game where the end game is item shop dictated and as such i will consider playing a paid game rather than this to go for the end game.

Make up your mind, and you'll never whine or repent about gaming hours anymore, then have a go at every Game. Open up the Internet, join in all the Mmorpgs you can. Go make the Guild. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible. "

I'm not sure what the review actually said.

I've been surprised that even at level 60, I've been able to level every other day just playing casually.  I've had somewhere around 13-20 out of 20 quests in the quest log throughout 60 levels, which does include 3-4 repeatable quests.

PW hasn't been nearly as grindy as virtually any other F2P MMO I've played (which is quite a few at this point).  For that matter, it's much less grindy then P2P games such as EQ# or LotRO.
