Highest Populated server?

slygamerslygamer Member UncommonPosts: 12

Hey guys! Just got a copy of FFXI Vana'diel 2008 Collection for the 360, which is sweet! Couldn't stand the controls on the PC, so i had to get the 360 version.

Anyway i was wondering, before i made my character i have a few questions:

What is the highest populated server? both of English and Japanese

What is the best race for a black mage? Tarutaru? or another race?

Thanks!

Doesn't really matter so much on the server. I guess like Odin or Asura I hear are suppose to be pretty populated. I'm on Kujata myself with a lot of people.

Doesn't matter what race you pick really. Pick based on what character you like to look at. Anyone can make any job work with any race. It just might take some more work put into certain ones. I myself started as an Elvaan Black Mage (they are one of the worst races for a BLM). That was my first 75 job. So, pick what race you think you like the best. Since any race can be any job, it kind of makes it a moot point to only have a race to focus on a certain type of job. Especially because you might want to change to a melee type from a mage. So, I say again, don't pick a race based off one job. Pick a race based on what race you like to look at best.

i joined Kujata as well, actually, because i saw someone's post about the people being very helpful in the server and as soon as i joined there were people willing to help. So thanks again for the recommendation!

Again i know that because each race can be everything, but because i came from WoW ( yes another WoW player looking for a game lol) im asking.

Like with WoW, a hunter for example is better off for such and such race rather than this race because of its racial abilities. I thought it had some kind of factor.

Oh, you're on Kujata? Look me up then. My user name is my character name. I'll help ya out any way I can if I'm able.

Well, yeah, certain races are better at certain jobs. But that doesn't mean you have to go with that race strictly for it's stats on say mage type jobs. Because, you might want to level melee jobs and if you are all about racial stats, you'd have to level a whole new character for that. Which defeats the purpose of being able to play any job one character. Just go with what race you like and work with it. Skill > Race. Just keep that in mind.

Isn't it like that about every game? Only way to know if they are true or not is to play it.

No, there is no real "trial" for this game beyond the buddy pass that comes with the bought game, But even that is not a real trial its just another full copy of the game and POL.

You can buy the Starter Kit, from EBgames/Gamestop and a few online game stores. It costs 2$ and comes with POL key and a FFXI key with 30day free time. You will need a Credit Card to activate the account.

    Enjoy

im liking my black mage a lot, but its really difficult to obtain gil and equipment. I can never muster enough gil to buy good gear. I looked on Alakhazam, but every quest i clicked on wasnt really level 1 requirement; it turned out to be like 24 or something.

Any tips on earning gil / obtaining gear?

What city did you pick? (going off what I have heard from others for Bastok and Sandoria)

If you picked Bastok, you will have to farm armor things off the turtle people I think and Fire crystals.

If you picked Sandoria, You will have to farm Crystals off the orks and Bat Wings.

If you picked Windy , Farm Crawlers for silk thread (sell for 8k a stack) and crawler caculi and turn them in for 600gil for 3 of them, Bees for wind crystals/ beehive chips and Honey, Goblins drop wild onions that sell well, the Bird people drop necks that sell for about 300 a pop, and everything else for earth/fire.

I picked windy b/c whats not to like about swampland....midgets and catgirls?? IMO windy is the best for a new character out of the sheer amount of money you can make as a nub. I started last week and I have 55k gil just from lvling to 10 a few times on Monk, WAR, and BLM. I have War to 15 and Monk to 19 but I made almost all of that money in the starter zone.

I hear fishing is very good skill to have for making gil, but have not had the time to try it myself.

Hope that helps, maybe a more seasoned player can give you better tips for making cash.

Also, BLM is one of the hardest jobs to lvl without a subjob imo.

I started in Windurst, because i heard that the other cities are hard to navigate in.

Thanks again for the gil making tips and hopefully i can level and get some money for equipment and such.

Are there any other tips for leveling a black mage or anything at all that you guys could share with me?

Only other Black Mage info I can pass on is that you will be soloing mostly after lvl 55 from what I hear. I plan on lvling my BLM for solo play when I cant find a group on my main job.

here's the deal, look up quests for cities. You are in windy? That was the most annoying city to me. It's very hard to get "Fame" in. Fame is a very determining factor which opens up new quests. You have a different Fame level in every city. When you get a decent amount by doing repeatable or random quests check out the warp II scroll quest. This scroll sells decent at jeuno related AH's. (on my server anyway) Also i suggest heading to bastok and doing the Warp scroll quest, its a very low level requirement and you need the scroll for level 18.

As for just starting out, kill everything you can, make sure you have signet while doing it. Get all the crystals you can find and put them on local AH's in stacks of 12. These will help you get your base economy since there is really no other way. Sell off you're crystals (you can only obtain crystals from easy prey mobs or higher while having signet. Also must be in an area not controlled by beastmen)

AIM me if you want more help i got class now

I think every nation has a low fame/level quest that rewards quick Gil. You can look them up at websites such as http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page!

For example, new players in Windurst can complete a quest from Port Windurst that gets them a Justice Badge - which should sell for 3,000 Gil, although that depends on the server. I've heard cases of people using an additional content ID to repeat the process of completing such quests in their nation and re-rolling after sending the Gil to their main characters. Of course, it is possible to ask a kind person for 10,000 Gil to start out. Alternatively, doing this a couple times may be the best way to get that initial 10,000 Gil.

If you aren't comfortable with the nature of this method, go with what korvix mentioned!

That doesn't work anymore. They changed it so that you have to be a certain level to do certain quests because RMT were abusing it.

I have to agree with the others about easy money starting out in windurst. Being able to collect crawler silk and crawler calculi and selling them can make a huge difference. On top of that most crafting costs a lot of money but you start out fishing you can make some huge money for a low level player. The fishing guild is in windurst so you can pick up a cheap rod for small fish and some worms for cheap and start catching moat carp. They are incredibly easy to catch and you will catch a lot of them quickly. They are selling for about 3k a stack but considering most gear at lower levels is dirt cheap that will add up really quickly for you. You will easily pay off your entry cost towards fishing as well. Other crafts will take months or over a year just to break even and you'll still need to lvl it more to make any real money of them but fishing can be done easily and is mostly profit until around lvl 50 or so skilling up can be a time and money sink but if you just do it for the initial gil you'll need to get going its good. Check this link out for more info. I would suggest using worms starting out though cause they are dirt cheap compared to insect paste or lures.

thnx a lot for all of this info. it has helped me out a lot and have begun leveling a warrior also to earn quick money. I have fishing on my BLM, and its ok gil atm, but not a lot.

I had a question for the warrior, however, what is the best weapon to use? Great Axe?

Because the delay on the great axe is really high and it seems even though it does a high amount of damage, if you miss once, thats some damage that a mob can do to you in that delay of time.

  • SatimasuSatimasu Member UncommonPosts: 900

You should stay with Great Axe. The reason why you miss and such is because the skill is so low. Once you get the skill capped and such, you should hit better. Also level Axe. Those are the best two a WAR could use. Also, I don't get when you said on your BLM you level fishing? What does that mean?

ohh ok. i figured that but starting out, the great axe must make encounters a lot longer.

Anyway, by leveling fishing i meant getting the skill level up, which im not sure if you actually do get the skill level up. But if you do thats what i meant. If not, then nvm.

  • SatimasuSatimasu Member UncommonPosts: 900

You either have to level G-Axe now or later in parties. Either way, it's going to make the encounters longer the more you miss. You'll miss less while you're leveling now than in a party, because the monsters are not way beyond your skills right now.

I was wondering about the fishing thing because you said on your BLM. Like you changed jobs to fish. That just seemed odd is all. It's great you're doing skill ups on fishing and aiming for moat carp. Just keep at it.

Just to explain out weapon skills work briefly. Each class is better with some weapons and they have a rating (A+, A-,B+,B-,C+,C-,D,E...you get the point ^^)...useing a A+ weapon will mostly be better than using a B- or lower. A example where a lower grade would be better is if you are fighting a lower lvl mob that is less resistant to say piercing (pole arm[B-]) than your main weapon (great Katana[A+]).  Just using SAM as a example.

use www.wiki.ffxiclopedia.org and click on Jobs>choose a job> scroll down and you will see a chart that will tell you what weapons are better for what class.

Hope that helps...get to know that wiki site, it will be your bestfriend ^^.

    image

  • slygamerslygamer Member UncommonPosts: 12

actually to tell you the truth, i had looked at that chart and it was very helpful. I just wasnt sure if it was the right weapon for me. I now see why it is the better of the weapons for the warrior, as i just bought the butterfly axe for my war and have been 2 shotting mobs at low lvls, and doing ok against my lvl mobs.

I just hit lvl 7 roughly a couple of hours ago, but had to stop because i was getting a lil bored. I was wondering is there quests i should be doing or should i be continuing my mission, because i haven't yet gotten around to do the mission yet.

Are there any quests that you guys know of that would be of great rewards?
