Lot of threads suggesting people are stupid to pre-order. Maybe so, maybe so...
But guess what - I can afford the hit if it turns out to fail, and truth be told even if the reviews are negative I am such an addict i will probably check it out anyway. I like the universe, I like some of the class concepts, I want to see what they made of this world.
Since I know that I will almost inevitably buy this game, I might as well enjoy that fresh sparkly its all new feeling - which is often the best time in an MMO. Even the bad ones (as long as bugs are not too awful) enjoy a certain excited sense of discovery at the beginning.
Getting in early is better for finding a good guild; better for defining your sense of character in the game; better for not treading a path a gazillion people (beta testing excepted, of course) have trodden before.
So, yeah, call me a fool, refer me to the beta leaks forums, tell me it's on rails and doomed to fail, but I will still fork out the price of a good meal in a restaurant to try it, and discover what some pretty smart games people have been pouring their heart and soul into for a few years.
If its another vanguard, I will cancel after my free trial and move on, and maybe write some nasty comments here on the forum. If it isn't, and turns out to be fun, I will be pleased I was in there on launch day.

If you can afford it and don't mind if it's a winner or stinker, go for it.
The only time I suggest not preordering is when you are unsure you want to take the risk or not.
Also, as I have said before, the only person who can tell you if you will enjoy the game or not is yourself.
But more importantly- Did you get anything neat for pre ordering?
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
That pretty much was exactly my reasoning, although I had the guild bit covered, heck, helped built mine almost from the ground up.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I agree with the OP. To me there isn't any other MMORPG that I am interested for comming out this year. I already have a copy of almost every other MMORPG sitting on my shelf, so what is one more. If I enjoy the game and the community. I will be glad I was there from the start. If the game is a flop...well I am out a bit of money, my loss. I know either way I will buy the game....7 day trial is never enouph to really get a grasp of the game, sometimes even 30 days isn't enouph.
Got my Rhino pre-order from Bestbuy, and also ordered C.E edition.
i'm confused if the 3-day bonus is a retailer thing or a funcom thing. if its a funcom thing than it shouldn't matter who u pre-order through.
@ Whoz'
I don't know. I can't find any info. on EBgames/Gamestop about the 3 day early entrance deal.
@ OP
I've no issue with anyone that says 'try before you buy' but having followed the game(the best I could) since '06, I pre-ordered the CE and I'm in guild already. So yeah, I know my interest in the game warrants those steps.

As long as you and others supports the possibility to publish crappy games and get some cash out of the deal, they will continue to do so.
I'm not saying AoC will be Vanguard 2.0 but in general I think preorder is a bad thing for the consumer.
I'm a fan of test before you buy and perchance as a consumer, you should be as well.

"I do something this way, you should do as well"
While I agree that people need to be cautious, I don't believe that publishers are set out to make crappy games. Yes, sometimes the master plan gets flawed. Money run out. Technology is not there etc. But usually people don't try to scam others from the get go. Which is what you're implying.
If not, my apologies.
I wouldn't call a "hype'n preorder" neccesary a scam, you are getting a game after all. What I am saying is that sometimes the quality of what you are getting may be lacking compared to what you expect. If you hold back your cash until you are satisfied that you get what you want, it may work as an incentive for the developer to put more quality into their work and, for some, be more realistic in their product description.

Well, sometimes people do seem to have unreasonable expectations. Sometimes it's the developers that generated those expectations in the first place. I'm not sure if the developers are to blame if they don't strive to correct false expectations, after all they are not in people's heads. They put a FAQ in their site and a product description and people try to decipher according to their own past experiences. You'll find contradicting expectations for this game as well, from people coming from different games. Some of these people will insist on telling you how this game should be played too.
I may be an old timer but there was a time once when developers were a bunch of friends, where the games didn't have big budgets for marketing and most of the games didn't have the funds to create a demo on top of the game. Yet people kept on buying games and kept on having fun. Bad games were developed back then as well, but people did have the means to at least know if the game was something similar to what they were expecting. If so, they took the chance and bought it, tried it and either loved it or not.
Nowadays, if the games don't fit our exact criteria, don't offer a free preview and don't pumper the players with the things he wants to hear, people moan. Are we wiser today, or just more spoiled?
We want to know everything now and sometimes that can persuade a dev to give information he or she is subject to change. I like to make fun of Funcom's long betatime and many releasedates changes. But that is really unfair. Game development is a highy dynamic environment and dates are moving targets. It's like predict the weather, it's just too many details that have to be considered.

I betatested Lord of the rings and because of that i preoredered it and bought the EU collectors edition with a lifetime account in it.Best deal ever.
Now almost a year later i'm growing a bit tired of it but that does not matter because i can just leave it on the PC and log in whenever i want without having to ever pay again except for the expansions.
If Funcom maded a lifetime offer for AOC i would buy it in a second.

LOL - It would have been the worst kind of deal for my and my friends. Out of the 8 guys I started out with in that game, all had quit even before the inbaked sub was over.

when i think of the money i have spent (quite happily) on Eve, EQ2 and WOW - if these games had lifetime subscriptions, I would have saved a fortune.
Nothing beats that pre-order excitement for a major release...
