World of Warcraft and Everquest II: The Fall of UO

gargantroogargantroo Member Posts: 1,477

This game will take a huge player loss when World of Warcraft and Everquest II come out, I dont think Samurai Empire will be enough to maintain a big enough population on this game. If the monthly fee doesnt drop to $10.00, or unless UO does a major advertising curve, maybe some attempts to give SE some hype, it might keep some players. But I cancelled my account for fear the game might stop paying. I've played since 2000 when Renaissance came out, I was 10 at the time. Since then I've seen UO evolve and begin to crumble. It's taken many player losses, like when Age of Shadows was released and Shadowbane was released, many people left. I think this will be much bigger then Shadowbane's release.

If UO does get cancelled, I'm going to first say that I'm psychic (that or I'd make a good weatherman), and then Im going to go cry in my closet

Bye UO image

PS: if the game doesnt get cancelled I'm gonna come back to the game and plan on being a really bad weatherman when I grow up

Ultima Online- Apoc
Final Fantasy XI Online- Nabara
World of Warcraft- (Coming soon :P)

Ack I made alot of typos that I dont feel like fixing in that post, so let me get the point across:

I think UO will get cancelled like Earth and Beyond and so I'm leaving UO.

    Final Fantasy XI Online- Nabara

The player loss from Shadowbane was awful, and Shadowbane was awful itself. The game drained lots of players and it wasnt even that hyped. I'm going to see how bad it is when WoW comes out.

I don't think WoW or EQ II have anything to do with the downfall of UO. I think EA and all the newbies that wanted UO changed have something to do with the downfall of UO. I wouldn't think people that played UO and still play UO are going to drop everything they've been working towards and just jump over to EQ II or WoW. Although they may not have made UO fall, they certainly may have helped it die and they may smother it, so to speak, after it is done burning.

P.S. I'm posting to the topic, not the actual post itself.

When AOS came out on my shard mostly everyone left for SWG and since then a lot of the vets have been leaving simply because OSI and them weren't holding up to their promises after all these years but instead trying to put out something to appeal to the masses. I think Samurai Empire will be like to, just eye candy and somethin new till the ppl get bored again. It's been all these years and they haven't even finished off the Virtues, which seems to be the basis of UO. I mean what does that say about them ya know.

I've been playing it 2 years, give or take a month lol. And already I get fed up with it sometimes, have to quit every few months. The only thing that keeps me going in UO is partly the people in it and wanting to help people and heck I don't wanna throw away all my hard work for nothing. But this new game that's comming out, WISH, may change that and I may leave UO permanantly then when it's released next year. I'll be a beta tester for it around September so hopefully it'll live up to my expectations and everyone elses, looks like it'll have A LOT of ex-UO ppl there :)

I have to agree with Gargantroo on this one. I played UO avidly for two years from 1999 to 2001 and eventually gave it all up as 3rd Dawn separated the have-broadbands from the have-nots and the community started to struggle under the weight of poor EA management. I'm one of many who might possibly be tempted back as I upgrade to broadband and a faster machine, but I see little chance of that happening as EQ2 and WOW arrive. Stragglers and undecided people like me will inevitably try out the new generation of MMO gaming first, and only resort to going back to UO if the new communities fail to satisfy.

It's a real shame that EA cocked it up so much, UO was once so great and has some very happy memories for a lot of people, including me.

Ironically, I was a 'have-broadband', but 3rd dawn is the thing that chased me away!

    I hated the 3d

I think it was the whole idea that UO was going 3d.

I also kind of meant, way deep down, that UO 3rd dawn was the beginning of the end. heh....

As for not having to use 3D.. well, some of the new lands back then didn't support the old 2D architecture, and could only be played in 3D.. meaning that if some of the guild wanted to hunt in the new lands, then the rest had to stay behind in 2D world, where non-broadband lag wouldn't result in instant death between screen updates.. and so guilds start to get shaky, and the world loses some of its magic.

I guess it might not sound too serious now.. but back then it was just one thing too far.. I imagine UO could have survived as the dominant force if only the rest of the world and storylines had been sufficiently supported.

I agree with Jimlee, it was dumb for EA to create 3rd dawn and not even think about the people's reaction. I never really thought it would split people up. I remember getting Third Dawn later on, and I remember seeing no one there. It was a desert. It was dumb of EA. I also think colored weapons made from magic runic hammers and the whole bow thing is dumb too. Why would you make something like that becides empowering the powerful. The rich and skilled characters would only get richer and more skillful because they have the recourses and the abilities. For example, a person with no money wouldn't be able to buy skill scrolls and they wouldn't have the skills to do enough quests for a runic hammer. I think it's fantastic that they brought quests back, but they should also make new kinds of quests instead of ' go kill 5 trolls ' it's a little dull.

Oh, what do I know. I don't even play the damn game anymore. Ignore me, I pretty much just typed so much to increase rank. I havn't recovered from that slam I got for like 10 deleted posts.
