Against my better judgement, I bought the RoK All-in-One pack digitally. I bought this earlier today, like around 1pm. It is now after 11pm for me and it is still downloading. In fact, it still has another hour left. I also read in a few other threads that computers with a 8800 series graphic cards have performance problems. Well hell, wanting to play a game with fantastic graphics is a reason I decided to buy EQ2. I just got my new computer yesterday and I have a 8800 GT graphics card. I haven't even started playing the game and I am already regretting buying it. Seriously, an 11 hour download and a game that runs like crap on a high end graphics card? What's next.

Excuse me for being negative, but I was excited to start playing today, but it seems like I won't even get a chance to play until tomorrow, wasting an entire non-refundable day out of my free 30 days that came with the game. Not to mention, once I do start playing it, I might not be able to play it on max settings. I just need to vent.

There's still hope for your card, and I just posted about it actually in the 8000 series thread here :P

The only question is how long will it take for Nvidia to figure out a solution?

Well its no secret that EQ2 runs like a fat chick in thigh high water.

However, I do have an 8800 GTS 640 meg card and I can run 4 EQ2's at once with about 30fps. Granted with absolutely EVERYTHING on high its not the fastest experience, i usually do one notch down from that if Im doing one client, its definitely playable.

EQ2 for whatever reason just wasnt optimized very well, but it is definitely playable while looking good on an 8800.

I also have a 8800 and run the game with some settting changes

    - shadows off

    - flora displacement off

i would not say eq2 was not optimized, the problme is that the engine is more than 6 years old. (release 2004 and some years in developement before).  2004 was the year when intel released prescot and everyone was still aiming for higher clock frequencies.

i think  it was start of 2005 intel had to change their roadmaps and canceled the sucessor of the prescott and wnet for multicore in desktop environment. till this time noone really suspected that multicore cpus will be the standard in pcs at home. there were some multicore cpus in the roadmaps but most of these were aimed for workstation/server market.

on the gfx card side the decission was made to support geforce 3 as minimum requirement, so they had to write their code with shader version 1.1.  that was a bad decission for performance on newer cards cause they had to put more calcualtion in the cpu which were not supported by shader 1.1 cards. while going for shader version 2.0 would have given them more options to put calcualtions into gfx cards that would also have locked out even more people at launch. with the requirements set as they were people were still complaining that they are too high around launch.

A mmo client does not much more than display data sent from server so in this point it works more like a demo, there are no ai calculations done on client, there is none (or at elast not many) physics calculations done on client, so its all about displaying. from what i have heared the real display part of games does not scale that good with multicore, you start getting more and more gains when you add in ai, physics and other calcualtions which the game engine can do with the other cores while displaying still is done mainly on one core. so i trust greg (https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=11200283&postID=7920920586871988302) when he says that the gains expected from adding more multicore support to eq2 won't be too high.

I also can see taht you will probably gain much more with transfering work from cpu to gpu. its a lot work cause they have to change all shaders to shader 2.0 level, but i hope they consider doing it. i guess that would be a good project for next expansion, i don't think you can do it in the normal monthly updates.

some people told that they would rather se not much content updates over a engine code rework, but that won't work not everyone in dev team can program a graphic engine. there are a few client programmers that can do that, maybe soem of teh server code team can help out with that too. but the rest of the devs taht deisgns quests, items... has probably no experience with graphic engines.

Thats why most engine upgrades are done with expansions for tehse you usually have a seperate team doing the first part of the work, and if you plan an engine rewrite then you get some more people with programing experience for that. Changing an engine is a huge project that requires months, and then a lot time in testing.  So if they plan that for next expansion they probably shold allready have some coders working on it now to have it ready for the first beta in summer, and their usualy expansion release in november.

The others have already answered about the 8800 card.

However, let me ask you a question.... the game, with all the expansions (which is what RoK has) is roughly 16 gigs of information, did you think it was only going to take an hour or two to download?

  • JK-KanosiJK-Kanosi Member Posts: 1,357

So I went to bed with only 40 minutes left of my download, but I couldn't stay up any longer. It was 1am. I woke up excited at 8am to play my game, but the launcher said I had 40 hours left of download time. My eyes about fell out of their sockets. I restarted the launcher and it now says 7 hours. What the hell is up with this? How long does this game take to download digitally? I wish this game was ran by a more competent company, like Mythic, since Mythic has phone support.

You have to keep in mind the size of the files your downloading.

EQ2 with all expansions weighs in at a whopping 10GB which is 10485760kb. Divide that by whatever speed your downloading at.(ex. 200kb/sec would take 14 hours to download 10GB..I think if my calculations are correct.

And the auto updater for EQ2 is the slowest I have ever seen..getting 25-75kb/sec when i updated.

Also I run it on a Geforce 8600 GTX and it runs good for me with some tweaking. The only reason this game wont run on max settings for anyone is the game was designed to take advantage of future cpu/gpu's that come out. They basically future proofed the graphics in the game.

    Read this http://eq2.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&file=index&func=display&ceid=8&meid=125 and/or this

    http://www.theclenchedfist.com/Content/pa=showpage/pid=15.html

I can only recommend that you start on the balanced setting. Turn all Shadows off and set max lights to 1.

Also run www.windowsupdate.com get latest drivers for video and audio cards, the latest chipset driver for your motherboard/processor, and if you run a dual core get the dual core optimizer patch from intel or amd.

I just started playing about a week ago and I love it. If you start a character on the Unrest server hit me up on my character name Jessix.

i know it seems like alot of work but I can help! :)

I do find it funny how they can write this and beleive it.

How long does it take to download a game?

Download times vary depending on the size of the game, content or service and the specifications of your computer. For example, downloading a 5 gig file typically takes at least an hour for a broadband connection. YEA RIGHT LOLZ!

What you are saying about download speeds makes perfect sense, however, I've been downloading this game for over 24 hours straight. I just watched a 3 hour movie. Before I put the movie in, the downloader said it had 4 hours 35 minutes left. After the movie, I checked on it expecting to see an hour left, yet saw that I had 6 hours left. This has happened 4 times already since I started downloading the game. Just last night I had only 40 minutes left. How can any rational man justify my download time going from 40 minutes left last night to 40 hours left this morning and once I restarted it, 6 hours left, and before I started my movie, 4 hours left, but after the movie 6 almost 7 hours left.

I just restarted it again and it says 4:45 minutes left. I'm about to go out to eat and I bet when I return it will say even more.

Aren't there any IT professionals that play this game that can help me solve this problem. It would have been 10 times faster to buy the game from a store and download it that way and just patch it. Is there a way to get a refund for the digital purchase?

never buy digital. end of story. get off you butt and go to a store and buy the game. cheaper and faster. i actually bought the eq2 classic pack for 5 dollars at ebgames. im sure they would charge alot more doing it digitally.

I have CA anti-virus and anti-spyware suite, but I turned it off this morning after I figured it might have had something to do with it. I do connect wirelessly and my internet can get pretty slow, however, it doesn't make logical sense on how a 40 min download turned into a 43 hour download over night.

I feel your pain. I just went thru a 16hr dl on a different game and that was only around 5gig. As was said before, it's faster and cheaper to just haul your ass down to your local game store. I wish I had taken that advice myself.

  • JK-KanosiJK-Kanosi Member Posts: 1,357

Yeah, I wish I would have bought the disc physically myself now too. I didn't run out and buy it, because I figured it would be easier to download it than dress my kid and head out and get it. Regretting that decision a lot now.

Okay, for that IT guy. I just ran an online speed test and I am getting 1,490 kb/s download and 229 upload. I restarted the launcher when I got home from eating and it read 2:44 min left. After I restarted it, it weant up to 4 hours and gradually went down to 3 hours after about 5 minutes of downloading. It's been an hour since then and I am now at 4:53 minutes until finished. This makes absolutely no sense and I fault SOE's launcher for this. They should be allowing higher download speeds from their server. I know I am reaching here, but I think this is another example of SOE being  cheap in customer service.

Firewall and Proxy Information for EverQuest II

Im assuming you have a router. You need to properly configure your router to work with eq2.

If you need help doing this I can assist.

    Question

What is the firewall and proxy and information for EverQuest II?

    Answer

    EQ II Firewall Information

Sony Online Entertainment does not support the use of firewalls and proxies, including cable/DSL NAT routers, campus and office networks, or any type of Internet connection sharing services. However, in an effort to assist you in configuring your systems on your own, we would like to provide the following information which may help you in setting up your firewall to work with EverQuest II.

EverQuest II LaunchPad and Patch Servers

A TCP connection is initiated to patch.station.sony.com at port 7000.

A UDP connection is initiated to port range 3016-3021 and 9700-9703.

    EverQuest II Patch:

A TCP connection is initiated at port 7010.

    EverQuest II Game Client:

UDP connections are initiated from the EverQuest II client on UDP ports 9100, and UDP ports in the range 32800-33000.

Additionally, ICMP messages type 0 (echo reply), 3 (unreachable), 8 (echo request) and 11 (expired) should be permitted bi-directionally between the client PC and the EverQuest II servers.

    EverQuest II Servers Subnets:

There are multiple IP addresses for the Patch and LaunchPad clusters, and they may change as the network demands, so check often using a DNS lookup tool if you provide a specific firewall rule for these services. The EverQuest II server IP addresses are currently in these subnets: 64.37.158.*, 199.108.2.*, 199.108.12.*, 199.108.202.*, 199.108.203.*, 195.33.135.*

Access your router by opening a wen browser and typing 192.168.1.1(is this doesnt work try 192.168.2.1,3.1,1.2,1.3)  the user and password is usually    User = Admin  Pass = password(or blank)

GO into Port forwarding and add the port ranges on UDP/TCP both(there may be a radio button you have to click to set that port forward to enabled after you type in the ranges)

    Apply settings relaunch downloader.

-----Also make sure you disable windows xp firewall-----

(or you can add the port ranges in to it, but your router is your firewall and its not needed)

OH if you cant tell what your router ip address is(do click on start, click run, type in the box   cmd.exe   push enter. when the window opens type    ipconfig   push enter

you also may want to run a tweak test on www.dslreports.com under tools to see if windows is set up properly for your connection,.

BUT if this is the only issue you have had with slow download speeds it is probabaly the fire wall router.

A QUICK AND EASY TEST WOULD BE TO ENABLE DMZ IN YOUR ROUTER SETUP(you would enbale it and put your computers ip address into it.This would allow all internet traffic back and forth from your pc)

this opens you up to everything literally so it is not recommended without a software firewall.. But it can be used as a quick test to see if it really is the router or not.

Hopefully you haven't lost hope lol.

    QUICK STEPS

    1. open browser go to 192.168.x.x

2.find port forwarding or DMZ through the various menus

    3.Enabe DMZ(for testing)

if this fixes it turn DMZ off and go to step 4, if it doesn't tell me.

    4. Under port forwarding add the following:

    7000-7010      -TCP only-

    3016-3021 and 9700-9703.        -Both TCP/UDP

    9100 -9110   -UDP-

    32800-33000.    -UDP-

Well I can only guess from no response is

    1. You managed to completley ruin your internet connection

    2. YOu said screw it and decided to not play.

    3. Real life has taken over and you just haven't had the time to play

Hopefully you are still content on playing. The server Unrest I play on was jam packed with new players asking questions in chat last night.

The station launcher someone refered to above always download way faster for me.  I'd give that a try.  I reinstalled the game completely from the station patcher a couple weeks ago and it only took a few hours.  course I have a very fast connection.

Oh, none of the above. I read your response for the first time just now. The download finished later that night and I was able to play for a few hours before going to bed.

I am really enjoying the RoK 1-20 content right now, however, I am starting to notice more kill and collect quests being thrown in there. I guess they are to compensate for the extra xp you need to gain a level. Actually, I am having so much fun that I haven't paid much attention to my level. I really like how many different ways you can advance your character using AA's, Race, and Class Traits. I haven't had this much fun since I played DAoC when it first came out and SWG before the NGE.

I recommend going to www.eq2interface.com and installing the EQ2MAP add on.

It puts markers on your map for everything related to quests/npc's/mobs. You can also add waypoints based on coordiantes.it also has maps of every location that the original maps dont have(dugeons for ex.)

So if you look a quest up on eq2wiki you can punch the coordiantes for the target obejective and BAM you got a line pointing you right to it.

Huh... in all my years of playing pretty much all of the SoE games) since 1999.... never had any issues with download speeds or flux.  (not counting for patch/launch/expansion days, of course.

        *shrug*

SoE is the DEVIl though... that still has not changed.

If you get  the EQ2Map add-on, make sure you get the POIFinder to go with it.

Try out some of the other UI add-ons at EQ2Interface as well. A lot of it is just personal preference, but one of my favourites is the one that changes the 'Targeting Rings' to a 'Celtic Gold' metallic style.

If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
