PS I know you dont want to do a trial. Lord knows why you dont want to do one, but I would heavily suggest you try the trials first.

If you dont, I dont want you coming back saying how much money you waisted and the advice given to you was horrible!

There, i had to get that off my chest

LOTR has more of a "down to earth" feel , while WoW is extreamly high fantasy setting.  Thats not to say that LOTR is not fantasy, its just that the landscapes and most of the MOBS are more reality based where as WoW's landscapes, buildings and general over all look are not something you would see while out strolling in the real world wilds.
LOTR has a neat interlocking storyline quest set, where one long story is told throughout a set of instances.
WoW is mostly a bunch of separate quest and you dont get to any of the main plot lines of the world until the highest levels.
LOTRs story/quests are cool but I think WoW wins in this because they are they are new stories and Blizz can go as far out as they want with them.
There is not much Spellcasting in LOTR.. its more real world style fighting , where as with WoW ever spell you can think of is going off all the time.
WoW has two factions you can play, Kinda a good and evil set up. In LOTR everyone is on the same side and all player races are mostly human looking.  (LOTR does have "monster play" the PVP set up for LOTR , it is VERY cool, you roll a lvl 50 Monster ... you can be a spider!)
Both games have a super , amazing interface system that you just can not complain about. This area of both games is almost a polished and and as slick as possible

Very nice comparison................see people it is possible to compare games without being a hater of one or the other!!!

Fun for a while but ultiimately lacking in depth. The combat is more fun in TR, but the skills from level 30 upwards are very lacking, and the high level content virtually doesn't exist.

yes. Google direct 2 drive. Then when you go to Direct 2 Drive, go to MMO and then youll see world of warcraft.

Buy it, get the cd key and then download. Good thing about Direct 2 Drive is that it will always remember what you bought so if you uninstall it you can alway redownload it from their server.

But to be more specific with the two games to be only fair

    WOW

    Pros:

Easy to play and understand (this could be a con),

Beautiful Lore system. You could run past 100 differnent lore situations and never even know. (for example, the throne room in the castle above the undead undercity is rich in recent lore. If you turn up your speakers really high you can hear people clapping and cheering for you as  you walk down the outside court (as similiar to the Prince who just finished his expidition in the north and become possessed but know one knew he was possessed). Then in the throne room you will see the blood exactly where it spilt when the Prince killed his King father.  Lots of people run past this and not even know the lore. This is just one example.

    Cons:

Horrible community. Most of the allies are just pissed off immature kids or suicidal single adults who still lives with their moms. Its really bad.  If you do play the horde, stay away from Barrens.  The ooc chat their is about as immature as the Spear sisters.

    Lotro

    Pros:

All your characters look like very good looking women!

    Nice graphics

    Cons:

Linear type of gameplay. It follows a storyline specific to the movies. Everyone follows the same type of storyarc and you dont get a feel like you are creating your own path

Graphics: While the environment grapics are great, the character graphics just plain suck to me. Wont go into detail.

tks for the info.....if i go ahead and make the purchase...will i also need the expansion sets?....can they be purcahsed online also?

If someone would put a gun on my head and tell me I MUST play either.

I would pick LotRO.  The mistakes and the flaws seems to be lesser, from a grouper point of view.  But again, they would need to FORCE me to play either game.  :P

Its a tough decision between LOTRO and WoW. Both offer very similar styles of gameplay, it depends which you prefer. WoW has a decent community on the right server with the right people, but due to it being so popular it does indeed have a huge amount of idiots.

If you love the LOTR world you'l love LOTRO.

Like i said both of the gameplay styles are very very similar. It would be a tough decision. I think solely because WoW was my first MMO i was truly sucked into then i'd have  to say WoW - but I love both games, its really preference. Read some reviews, watch some videos, see which you think suits you more.

I think that Lotro is better if you want to quest and follow a storyline, and some of the graphics (not animations, only graphics) in the game look amazingly beatuful, whereas WoW is overall a bit better, more polished, and more fun game, and has much better PvP. Also WoW has more content, and the classes are more diffirent from each other so that it's more likely that you'll find just the class and playstyle you are looking for.

If you want to play WoW, you can just buy the original game and play it without expansion (the expansion can later be bought online and downloaded if you feel the need for it). Or if you want both the game and the expansion, World of Warcraft Battle Chest includes both of them. As far as I know, you can't buy European version of online officially, but some gold selling sites sell the cd-keys online if you don't want to go to a shop.

If you want to buy Lotro, you can do it online from Codemasters Online store.

But I'd suggest trying out the free trials before buying, you won't lose anything.

I dont know about that. I loved the movies. I hated the game. Then again, I hate pretty much all of Turbine's MMOs (except for Asheron's call)

The LOTRO world looks beautiful, as someone already mentioned in this thread. If you like the LOTR Worlds you'l like the Worlds in LOTRO.

Sorry I meant to put that, not the entire game.

Most people need to realize that the game is not based on the movie, it was based on a book.  *gasp* it was actually in written form long before the movie, first book was written while Tolkien served as an officer in WW1.

Likewise the movie was based on the book, but even 6 to 9 hours of video could not even come close the vision in the book.  If you play the game, read the book (again if you read it before) while you play it makes LoTRO more vivid and understandable.

If you've got the key, just DL the client and install it.  Start it up and the client will update...if u have a fast connection, it'll take about 3hrs or so!

    Thats it!

Just buy the game from store. You'll still have to download updates, but it's a lot less to download.

And the download is 3 hours on a fast connection. If you don't have fast connection be prepared that you may have to download more than a day if you want to download whole installation program from the net. You'll also need nearly 20 gb free hard disk space for Lotro download and installation, and for WoW a bit less.
